I merely regarded Rayna as fragile, wishing to keep her safe by constraining her within my circle of protection. Never had it crossed my mind to tell her whatever Iâd done and face everything together.
Propping a hand against his forehead, Jefferson gave a bark of self-deprecating laughter. âA single mistake led to countless more mistakes down the road. Well, it turned out that I lost to you in this aspect.â
If I could turn back time to return to when we got acquainted and cast my concerns aside, would we have ended up together instead?
At that precise moment, a knock sounded on the private room door.
A server stepped in and handed the small box in his hand to Curtis. âHereâs the item you requested, Mr. Faymon.â
âThank you.â Curtis slid the box over to Jefferson. âIn it is the plant capable of regenerating cells I obtained from that village in Tyrandas when I went there with Rayna back then. Its research has succeeded.â
Jefferson gaped at him, questioning incredulously, âDidnât Jeremyâs lab explode and all research specimens get destroyed? Why do you still have it?â
âA total of six stalks of Ixora were preserved, and five were kept at the lab. Jeremy wanted to try out his new equipment, so he took a stalk away,â Curtis explained.
Subsequently, Jefferson opened the box.
A capsule encased with green liquid came into sight, so vivid that it gave off a sense of vibrant life.
âThe research was incredibly successful, but this drug has side effects in and of itself. It can only extend your lifespan by thirty to thirty-five years. I think you need it now even if the efficacy is limited.â
At Curtisâ words, Jeffersonâs lips turned up. âThirty years is already a miracle. The lifespan of the average person is merely sixty to seventy years anyway. Considering my condition, living up to fifty years old is Godâs grace.â
He then asked, âYou couldâve exchanged this drug for the sum of an elderly rich manâs assets and expanded Faymon Group.
Why are you giving such a priceless treasure to me?â
Curtis chuckled, his voice solemn and tinged with a hint of gratitude. âAs you said, itâs a priceless treasure. Money canât compare to it. This is my gift of thanks to you for taking such good care of Rayna.â
âI didnât do it for your sake but because I love her!â Jefferson riposted.
Curtis merely grunted in acknowledgment. âI know, but that doesnât change the fact that Iâd like to thank you. I know she has been searching everywhere for someone to save you. She doesnât want you to die so early. As such, neither do I.â
Then he glanced at his watch. Seeing that it was already so late, he worried Rayna would really throw a tantrum and refuse to eat.
He stood up from the couch. âIâm going over to her place to look in on her. Iâll have a server send you back later.â
Just when he reached the door, Jeffersonâs voice abruptly rang out.
âWhen Belle woke up in the hospital and learned that she was pregnant, she didnât want to keep the babies at that time. It wasnât that she didnât love them, but she was probably afraid that Arnaud would take advantage of your weakness. By the time I rushed to the hospital, she had already taken an abortifacient. I was the one who jabbed a finger down her throat and forced her to chuck up the pill.â
Enduring the pain within him, the man continued icily, âYou should thank me, Curtis. If it werenât for me getting soft-hearted and going to the hospital to stop her from doing so, your children wouldâve long since been gone. There would no longer have been anything linking you both!â
Curtis closed his eyes for a moment before replying in a relatively calm voice, âThank you. If you want to visit the Faymon residence, you may do so anytime.â
Shortly after, the private room door slammed shut.
Jefferson stared at the green capsule in the box, his thoughts taking a sardonic turn. Curtis and I have always been at odds with each other, but weâve actually made peace now.
He snickered, his expression stained with excruciating agony. âAt the end of the day, Iâm still too compassionate...â
I love Rayna, so I didnât want to see her sad. If I had forcibly taken her to Jetroina back then and forbade her from returning to Norwal City, all this wouldnât have happened.
Meanwhile, Curtis had a server at the clubhouse drive for him. Worried that Rayna hadnât any food at her condominium, he even had the server go to the establishmentâs kitchen and help prepare a massive bag of groceries for him.
After taking the elevator upstairs, he stood on Raynaâs doorstep with a bag of groceries in his hand and pressed the doorbell.
He heard soft footsteps, but the door remained closed even after some time had passed.
Hmm, itâs likely that she saw that it was me through the peephole, so sheâs pretending to be asleep and not hear the doorbell.
âRayna, I can see that the lights in the living room are turned on. Open the door, or Iâm going to bust my way in. You wonât be able to sleep at night if the door is broken.â
A few seconds later, the door in front of him swung open.
Glancing at the bottom of the door, Rayna griped in chagrin, âHow could you see any light when this door is opaque?â
âOh, really? So, you werenât asleep, huh?â Curtis arched a brow.
As realization dawned upon Rayna that she had fallen into his trap, her temper spiked, and she made to slam the door shut in a towering rage. âI want to go and sleep now, okay? If thereâs nothing else, please leave!â
âWhy are you wearing a pair of black slippers?â
âWhat are you talking about? Itâs obviously...â Rayna lowered her head, wanting to scoff at him for having such severe color blindness that he couldnât even differentiate between black and yellow.
Unexpectedly, Curtis seized the opportunity when she did so to pull her into his arms lest he knocked into her. Effortlessly making his way into the house with the grocery bag, he nudged the door close with his leg.
The instant Rayna wrapped her mind around it all, she smacked his hand off her, shaking in fury. âYouâre a downright b*stard, Curtis! I may be a touch muddled due to my delicate condition, but you donât have to trick me again and again!â
Frustratingly, I fall for it every single time!
Ignoring the murderous look in her eyes, Curtis carried the groceries to the kitchen.
When he walked past the living room, he noticed that the coffee table was bare, with only a glass of water on it. As soon as he entered the kitchen, he discovered that it was even emptier. On top of that, a layer of dust blanketed the countertop. At a glance, he could tell that the kitchen hadnât been used in a long time.
He heaved a sigh.
Sheâs really throwing a tantrum and going hungry. Fortunately, I came over.
âWhat are you doing, Curtis?â Hurrying over, Rayna snatched the spatula out of his hand. âYouâve got no talent for cooking, so donât mess around here, lest you blow my kitchen up.â
âIâm just planning to cook pasta. If I blow your kitchen up, Iâll give you a house as compensation. Thereâs too much dust in the kitchen. Iâm going to clean up. Go out first to save yourself from getting all dusty.â Curtis snatched the spatula back without much difficulty.
However, Rayna remained standing there motionlessly, eyeballing him coldly. âWhy should I listen to you when this is my kitchen?â
Curtis didnât bother arguing with her. He deftly pushed her out of the kitchen and barricaded the sliding door with a broom.
Outside, Rayna yanked at the door for a long time but to no avail. She was livid, yet she could only shoot daggers at the door.
Yawning, Carl walked out of his bedroom. At the sight of Rayna standing outside the kitchen with the lights on inside, he asked in curiosity, âWhat are you doing here, Ms. Rayna? Whoâs in the kitchen?â
Rayna snorted coldly. âNo one. Hurry up and go to sleep!â
âIâm thirsty and came out for some water.â Going over to the refrigerator, Carl took out a bottle of mineral water and unscrewed the cap. Nevertheless, he made no move to return to his bedroom.
Instead, he stole another peek at the kitchen. âIs it Mr. Hamilton, Ms. Rayna?â
For a moment, Rayna was dumbfounded.
Carl continued, âAlthough I pity him, Mr. Curtis was exceedingly handsome when he barged into the church and called a stop to the wedding this morning. Look, he had no qualms giving up his company for you, so he must still love you!â
Rayna slapped him on the back of his head. âHow would you know all this when youâre still a kid?â
âWhile Iâm young, thereâs the internet and television. Ms. Rayna, I discovered that youâve turned increasingly slow-witted since you got pregnant. Would my wife also be dumb in the future?â Carl regarded her with anxiety written all over his face.
Following his insult, Rayna could no longer remain calm. She pinched his cheek hard. âThis isnât slow-witted. Iâve just got a lot of things on my mind, so it takes me time to register something. Understand?â
âIsnât that being slow on the uptake? Whatâs the difference between the two?â
Rayna was promptly rendered speechless.
