Chapter 521 Raynaâs expression shifted. âCurtis Faymon, what do you think youâre doing?â
âGo upstairs. Iâve to talk to him about something.â
She tried pulling his hand away. âThe two of you have nothing to talk about. Let go! Weâve broken up already. Iâm begging you, leave me in peace, okay? Iâll let you have two of the babies.â
Curtis stood there quietly as she shook and scratched at him, not daring to move. He feared he would inadvertently hurt her and the children if he flew into a rage.
âGo upstairs, Rayna,â he said in an imposing tone, fixing his dark eyes on her. âI wonât hurt him. All I want is to have a chat. Weâll talk about us another time.â
She clenched her jaw, but before she could say anything, he added calmly, âI know about the bet between Jefferson and his brother. Donât make me interfere.â
What the heck! How dare he threaten me?
Glowering at him, Rayna uttered angrily, âYou b*stard! I wonât eat anything tonight, even if it means starving to death!â
With that, she spun on her heel in a huff.
Curtis pinched the space between his brows as a throbbing headache assailed him.
He waited until Rayna was inside the building before letting go of Jefferson. âWhy donât we find a place to have a drink and chat?â
Knowing he would not have a chance of getting into the condominium with Curtis there, Jefferson agreed dourly.
Curtis drove them to a club owned by Wyatt.
Upon noticing that Curtis had brought a guest, the waiter arranged the best private room for them. The waiter also served them wine as per Curtisâ preference.
Curtis picked up the wine bottle, poured some into a glass, and handed it to Jefferson.
âMr. Faymon, I canât believe youâd stoop so low that youâd even think of such a dirty trick as bride kidnapping,â Jefferson remarked with a sneer as he grabbed the wine glass from Curtis.
âInitially, I was supposed to head to Xyperia for a business trip on your wedding day. However, Jeremy called and said there was a problem with the labor suppressants Rayna was taking. I was just worried about her and the babies,â Curtis replied.
Fortunately, I answered that call and rushed to the church immediately to look for Rayna. Otherwise, thereâs no way I wouldâve found out that the children are mine and would regret it for the rest of my life.
Jefferson snorted. âYou caused her younger brotherâs death, then start feeling sorry for her after your break up? Mr. Faymon, what youâre doing is absolutely ridiculous.â
Curtis looked at him, his gaze suddenly piercing. âEven Rayna has no idea that her younger brother went to Yartran to kill Arnaud, so how is it that you know about it?â
âIâve many informants in Yartran, so itâs hardly strange that I know about it.â
âArnaudâs men are also secretly watching you. If you know about that matter, then it means Arnaud will have found out that someone is out to assassinate him and will surely be on his guard. You learned about it from somewhere else,â Curtis responded, his tone gradually turning grim.
Jefferson admitted frankly, âThatâs right. I learned about it through another source. Mr. Faymon, is there any point in discussing that with me now? Wasnât it you who killed her brother?â
âI underestimated you,â Curtis replied. Although he was smiling, his smile did not reach his eyes. âYou even managed to plant your people at my side.â
After a pause, he continued, âYouâre right. Thereâs no point in discussing that. We have other more important matters to discuss.
Give up on the idea of still having a wedding with Rayna. I wonât agree to it.â
Jefferson was so enraged by his words that his eyebrows twitched.
Nonetheless, he did not lose his cool in front of Curtis. In a steady tone, he said, âThat decision isnât yours to make. Itâs up to Belle.â
Curtis laughed. âIn that case, you can save your time and effort. Sheâs pregnant with my children. I need to take responsibility for her and the little ones. Sheâs the only person who can be my wife.â
âHow is what youâre doing any different from imprisoning her?â
âWe had a misunderstanding, thus causing her to hate me. However, I thought she had abandoned me. Everything will be fine once we clear up the misunderstanding. Besides...â Pausing, he glanced at Jefferson with a hint of a smirk in his eyes. âDid you think a mere video would be enough to threaten me? I know her too well. If it were true that something was going on between the two of you, sheâd never have returned to Norwal City.â
After my anger subsided, I didnât care about that video anymore. All I wanted was for Rayna to trust and love me. I was willing to forget about everything that had happened earlier. However, when I suddenly recalled that video sometime later, I couldnât shake the feeling that Raynaâs behavior seemed strange. On top of that, the video had been edited. Hence, I guessed that Jefferson had sent the video to provoke me.
Jeffersonâs heart slowly sank, and his lips twitched. âSure enough, you always succeed in analyzing a situation calmly regardless of the time and place. How impressive.â
âI wish I could punch you in your face right now to vent my anger. Alas, I canât,â Curtis said calmly. âAnyway, I should thank you for taking care of Rayna while abroad.â
He clinked his glass against Jeffersonâs before continuing. âI also need to thank you for stepping forward and taking the bullet for her when I lost my rationality at Frosa and shot at her. Iâm truly grateful.â
Tipping his head back, he downed the glass of red wine in one go.
Rayna was probably already pregnant by that time. Had he not protected her, she wouldâve lost the babies, and I wouldâve regretted it for the rest of my life had I found out.
âWhy?â Jefferson suddenly uttered as he gripped his wine glass tightly, resentment etched across his face. âIâm not really lacking compared to you. I was the one who met and fell for her first, but why does she love you?â
Iâm with Rayna every day, and I notice everything about her. Sheâs always smiling, but I can see the sorrow she hides in her eyes. She says she wants to marry me, yet she doesnât care about me in that way. Even when she held my hand as we stood before the priest, she still wasnât thinking about me. The only person on her mind was Curtis. When Curtis gatecrashed the wedding to abduct Rayna, she hid behind me silently. However, I discovered that her hand was trembling. That, to me, showed that she was afraid to see Curtis because she still loved him. If he didnât mean anything to her, she wouldâve looked him straight in the eye and smiled calmly. At the time, instead of worrying about getting mocked by others, I was more afraid that I wouldnât be able to get her back if he took her away. Not only would I have failed to win Raynaâs heart, but Iâd lose her completely.
âThatâs because you donât know what she wants, and you like to keep things to yourself. As for me, I want her to know everything I do. If she wants to pursue her hobbies, I wonât stop her merely because itâll be dangerous. Iâll let her go ahead boldly and do it.
And if something does happen, weâll face it together. I may not show my love for her in a blatantly obvious way, but Iâll pay attention to what she needs and accept her the way she is. I wonât force her to do anything that makes her unhappy, and she doesnât have to change herself on purpose.â Curtis replied while pouring himself more wine.
As he spoke, he could not help chuckling. âIf Iâm being honest, Rayna has taught me a lot, such as how Iâll never enjoy much delicious food if Iâm a picky eater and how loving someone doesnât need to be all that complicated.â
I never expected to have anything to do with Rayna. After all, even our identities alone are a barrier. Itâs not the sort of barrier we can cross and end up as a couple just by saying, âI love you.â However, I later discovered just how interesting she was. She matured incredibly quickly and could comprehend anything with just a little push. She did not seem inferior next to me. Of course, there are times when sheâs too emotional, presumptuous, and causes a mess of things. Nonetheless, if she lost those traits, she wouldnât be her. Besides, itâs precisely because of those imperfections that I love her so dearly.
âI want her to know everything I do...â Jefferson mumbled. Suddenly, his muddled thoughts became clear.
I finally understand why Iâll never compare to Curtis.
