Chapter 365 Rayna asked, âWhy did I faint?â
Jefferson heard the hoarseness in her voice, and he felt as if his heart had been stabbed by a dagger. He carefully supported her up and poured her a glass of warm water. âThe doctor said you fainted because you were stressed out and didnât get enough rest.
âLet me do it myself.â After sitting up properly, Rayna took the glass and lowered her head to sip on the water.
Jefferson clenched his fists. He was not as nonchalant as he looked on the surface.
âWhat time is it now?â
Jefferson took the glass after Rayna finished drinking. âYou slept the whole day. Are you feeling all right? Do you want me to get a nurse?â
Rayna shook her head and looked at him. âYour wounds...â
âCurtis didnât hit any of my vital organs. Iâm fine.â Jefferson moved his body to demonstrate to her that he was fine. He broke into a warm smile. âI can be discharged once scabs form on these wounds.â
When Rayna recalled Curtisâ cold gaze back at the hotel, her heart trembled slightly.
âIâm sorry,â she said in an undertone.
Jefferson held her hand. âYou donât need to apologize to me. Iâm glad I took the two shots. If you were the one who got hurt, I would have gone insane.â
When he sent the edited video to Curtis, he only wanted to jeopardize the relationship between them so that she would stay by his side. Neither Curtisâ heartlessness nor Arnaudâs actions were something he had predicted.
Jefferson felt fortunate he had reacted fast enough when Rayna had tried to shield him.
He would have fought Curtis to the death if Rayna had been injured.
The more Jefferson thought about it, the more terrified he was. He clasped Raynaâs hand and said in his deep voice, âBelle, he tried to kill you by aiming at you. Such a man doesnât deserve you.â
âI deserve it. He hates me now.â Rayna closed her eyes and continued in a raspy voice, âKristie kept him and James in the dark and came to Frosa to find me, but I failed to protect her properly and let her get taken awayâ
âWho took her?â
Rayna shook her head. Her teeth were chattering due to the immense hatred she felt. âI saw Harry and Jason in the video!
Those two sc*mbags! Iâm going to kill them!â
Jessica must have wanted to tell Rayna about this because she had tried to call the latter several times.
Yet, Rayna did not pick up all these calls.
Rayna buried herself in Jeffersonâs embrace and sniffled. âIâm too naïve to believe that Kristie wouldnât be concerned and come looking for me. I should have informed James. Iâm not a good sister.â
Heartbroken, Jefferson comforted her gently, âBelle, itâs not your fault. You came to Frosa because of my condition. If anything, I should be the one who feels guilty. Youâre pregnant now. You should try not to be so emotional.â
Rayna raised her head and looked at him with surprise. âWhat? IâIâm pregnant?â
Chapter 365 âYes, the doctor confirmed that youâre pregnant with twins. But your current condition doesnât look so promising now. The doctor instructed you to eat labor suppressants and to control your emotions.â Jefferson repressed his feelings of loneliness.
Rayna touched her flat stomach. She found it hard to believe two lives were forming inside.
A few months ago, she had been thinking of telling Curtis that she was prepared to have a child once he came back from his business trip. She could not believe she was pregnant now despite not being able to discuss it with him.
Did it happen when we went to Jetroina? Alas, this pregnancy came at the wrong time.
Rayna felt joyful briefly before she became lowâspirited again.
First, it was because of Jeffersonâs treatment. Second, she had just broken up with Curtis. She did not want to bring up her children in a singleâparent family.
Jefferson noticed her grim expression, and hope welled inside him.
He asked carefully, âBelle, do you not want the kids?â
Rayna touched her stomach and muttered, âTwins... Thatâs hard to come by. Let me think about it.â
She was slightly reluctant.
Jefferson said, âIt doesnât matter if you want the children or not. You need to make sure to stay optimistic, and donât dwell on the sad things. Try eating more when dinner arrives. You must look after yourself.â
Rayna nodded.
The nurse would provide labor suppressants regularly to her, and Rayna would obediently take them.
She would occasionally see the nurse come by with a cart to change Jeffersonâs wound dressings. When she saw the two gunshot wounds on his shoulder, she felt troubled.
Although Jefferson had severe injuries, he would always comfort her. He even confiscated her phone and told her he would return it to her once her emotions stabilized.
After a week, scabs formed on Jeffersonâs injuries. As Rayna had been eating well and getting enough sleep for the past week, her complexion had become quite rosy.
The doctor arranged for Rayna to have another ultrasound.
Rayna felt a sense of tranquility envelop her as she lay on the bed and watched as the doctor pointed at two tiny dots on the screen and informed her they were gestational sacs. He even showed her the babiesâ fetal poles and heartbeats.
Jefferson waited outside the ultrasound room throughout her session. Once he saw her exit the room, he rushed to support her.
Rayna was amused. âIâm not that weak. I can walk by myself. You donât need to support me.â
Jefferson retreated a few steps. âOkay, Iâll follow behind you.â
The two of them took a taxi back to their place.
When Rayna retrieved her phone, she immediately messaged Robert to inquire about the status of the medication. Yet, after a while, she still did not hear back from Robert, who would usually respond to her right away.
Chapter 365 Rayna was worried he was busy. He said to the taxi driver, âPlease bring me to Baker Road.â
Jefferson asked, âAre you going to the lab?â
Rayna replied, âYes. Robert didnât respond to my message. Letâs go and take a look since itâs not far from where weâre staying.â
âSure.â
Rayna bit her lip. He tried calling James, but the line was always busy.
When she recalled seeing the nightmarish multimedia message, she began tearing up.
Itâs my fault that such a terrible thing happened. I canât bring myself to face James anymore.
She wanted to call Jessica and inquire about her situation. However, she did not manage to because she heard the driver mention a huge fire on Baker Road at that moment. She looked out the window in shock.
The fog was thick in a nearby mansion. Passersâby could even see the fire blazing through the windows. Some people tried to use the fire hydrant to extinguish the fire in the mansion but to no avail.
Isnât that Jeremyâs lab?
Rayna had come by this road a few times, so she was familiar with it. She immediately got out of the taxi upon seeing the fire and stumbled toward it.
She was about to run into the mansion when someone grabbed her wrist.
âMs. Garland, are you seeking death by running into such a big fire?â It was Robert who stopped her. The fire had burned off much of his blonde hair, and he looked disheveled..
âYouâre okay? Thatâs great! What about the other researchers?â Rayna asked as she grabbed onto his clothes.
âWe were eating when the fire occurred, so we were all able to escape. However, there was one researcher in the lab, and he passed away. The explosion came from the lab. All the equipment and the drugs under development have all been destroyed.â
Rayna widened her eyes and grabbed him tightly. âGone? What about Ixora?â
Robert replied, âIt was successful. I was going to call you in the afternoon and have you come and take it. I didnât expect the fire to happen. Iâm sorryâ
Raynaâs hands were trembling. She could not accept the reality of the situation now.
