Dear Sweetheart Chapter 228 A Lowly Employee âWhat happened?â Raynaâs heart clenched. âCould it be that Ms. Goath has tried to end her life?â
âThatâs not it. My father fell unconscious and was sent to the hospital.â
âIâll go with you.â Alfred was quite nice to her, so she felt bad that something terrible befell him. âIs he at the General Hospital?â
she asked, pulling Curtis into the taxi.
âYeah.â
Alfredâs private ward at the inpatient department of the hospital coincidentally faced the main road. As he was peeling some oranges, he was delighted to see Rayna and Curtis getting out of a taxi together.
âCurtis sure did a good job bringing Rayna along.â The elderly man hurried back into the bed while urging Gabriel, âQuick, get the doctor. Make it so that they think Iâm in a serious condition. It would be best if they think Iâm clinging to life.â
Gabrielâs lips twitched. âOld Mr. Faymon, isnât this going overboard? What ifââ
âWhy are you so garrulous?â Alfred was irritated. âDonât drag my son down with you just because you canât find a girlfriend for yourself!â
âBut that still doesnât justify lying to Ms. Garland,â Gabriel insisted. âHavenât Mr. Faymon done enough of that?â
Alfred retorted, âDonât compare me to him! Besides, itâs true that Iâm feeling unwell. Hold on, who are you even siding with, Gabriel? Are you a spy?â
âThis isnât what I meant, Old Mr. Faymonââ
Although Gabriel tried to explain himself, Alfred cut him short impatiently. âGo get the doctor. I shouldnât waste my breath on you, seeing that you donât even have a girlfriend.â
The younger man was at a loss for words.
Thus, he could only leave the ward in miserable silence.
Not only was I unappreciated after giving Faymon Group my all, but Old Mr. Faymon also condemned me! This is so unfair!
When Curtis and Rayna arrived at the ward, Gabriel and the doctor were already standing by the hospital bed. The doctor was giving Alfred a checkup with a solemn expression on his face.
âMr. Faymon, Ms. Garland,â Gabriel greeted the two of them. His hesitant look and Alfredâs appearance made Raynaâs heart sink.
At the same time, Curtisâ face fell.
After the doctor completed the checkup, he approached him and asked, âHowâs my fatherâs condition?â
The doctor replied, âOld Mr. Faymon has heart disease, to begin with, and the medicines can only relieve his symptoms... Spend more time keeping him company if you can, Mr. Faymon.â
Curtis was silent for some time. Even Rayna could sense that the atmosphere was off. Thus, she said to the doctor, âThank you so much. You should head back to work. We will keep Old Mr. Faymon company for the time being.â
The doctor nodded and soon left the ward.
Alfred, lying in the hospital bed, had opened his eyes. His eyes were filled with weariness, lacking their usual glow.
That sight caused Gabrielâs eyebrow to twitch. I have never seen someone better at pretending to be a âpatientâ than him.
To keep up with the act, he walked over to the bed. âYouâre finally awake, Old Mr. Faymon. How are you feeling?â
âI feel exhausted. Geez, Iâm getting older.â Alfred heaved a sigh. His eyes lit up the moment he saw Rayna, and he beckoned her over. âCome over here, Rayna.â
She hurried over to him and grasped his hand. âOld Mr. Faymon.â
âThank you for coming to visit me.â
âI came along with Mr. Faymon because I miss you,â Rayna said merrily. âI would love to visit you often if you donât mind. Will that be okay?â
Alfred shot Gabriel a look, prompting the latter to back away and head over to Curtis. âMr. Faymon, Old Mr. Faymon would like to have a word with Ms. Garland. Letâs give them some privacy.â
Without a word, Curtis exited the room alongside Gabriel.
âI have no idea how long I have to live, but I still have so many unfulfilled wishes,â said Alfred.
Rayna consoled him, âYou will live well into a ripe old age.â
He grabbed her hands tightly. âThe matter between Curtis and I is a secret that cannot be known to the public. Keep it between us. I hope you can forgive him. Iâm also heartbroken over Julianâs death, but thatâs not Curtisâ fault. Besides, Rolanda has another son who can take care of her, but Curtis has no one.â
âDonât worry too much now. Focus on recuperating instead.â Rayna pressed her lips into a thin line. âThere will definitely be someone to take care of Mr. Faymon in your stead.â
Alfred was a little disappointed. âRayna, do you not like Curtis at all?â
There was no response from her.
While she might have liked him before, she could not bring herself to forget what happened in the past.
âAlthough Curtis has a lot of suitors, fate will decide who gets to be together with him,â Alfred uttered. âHeâs not young anymore;
heâs already in his thirties.â
He patted Raynaâs hand. âItâs okay if you donât like him. I know love canât be forced. All I ask for is that you watch over him so that I can pass on without worries.â
âDonât say that, Old Mr. Faymon.â
âI know my body better than anybody else.â Alfred retrieved a ring from underneath his pillow. It was the blue sapphire ring that he gifted to her, only to be returned to him later on. âYou should keep this ring. If you know any woman you think may be a good match for Curtis, introduce her to him and give this ring to her.â
He did not force Rayna to accept the ring but entrusted it to her safekeeping for the time being.
Rayna did not know how to turn him down, so she accepted it. âOkay. Iâll hold on to it and hand it to Ms. Sanders if Mr. Faymon ends up marrying her.â
Given Alfredâs rich experience in life, he could sense something fishy from her words. Despite the smile on his face, he continued feigning a weak demeanor. âThank you, Rayna.â
Outside of the ward, Curtis drummed his fingers on his dress pants. The more he thought about the situation, the greater his suspicions grew.
Then, as if the truth had dawned on him, he glanced at Gabriel before commenting nonchalantly, âI smelled oranges in the ward just now.â
âI ate some,â the latter answered sheepishly. âI felt like chewing on something because I was too nervous.â
Curtis sneered. âIs that so? Iâll buy ten pounds of oranges later, and you have to finish them in front of me!â
Thatâs so vicious!
Gabriel cracked and confessed everything. âMr. Faymon, Iâm just a lowly employee. It was all Old Mr. Faymonâs idea. Show me some mercy.â
Curtisâ face darkened, and the veins on his forehead popped due to anger. âI was puzzled as to why he would pass out all of a sudden when heâs got nothing to worry about. All he does at home is some simple gardening and sunbathing!â
Gabriel muttered feebly, âOld Mr. Faymon does have something to worry about. He wishes for a grandchild. He will stop fooling around once you fulfill this wish of his, Mr. Faymon.â
âDid I give you permission to speak?â
The poor assistant shut his mouth and turned to face the wall in dejection.
My life is so hard!
About half an hour later, Rayna came out of the ward. She seemed rather down, but she managed to hide her sadness quickly.
âOld Mr. Faymon is asleep,â she said.
Curtis took a peek into the ward in exasperation and amusement. He mustâve known that I would see through his lie. Thatâs why he pretended to fall asleep to avoid being questioned by me.
âGabriel will stay here, and Iâll send you back,â he said and got the car keys from Gabriel.
Although Rayna wanted to turn him down, he was adamant about it. Not wanting to linger outside the ward, she gave in and followed him to the underground parking to get the car.
Even after they had gotten into the car, she remained silent, seemingly brooding over something with her head held low.
Curtis noticed that she was behaving oddly and reckoned that Alfredâs pretense had deceived her. Thus, he consoled her by saying, âMs. Garland, whatever it is that my father told you, you donât have to take it to heart.â
Rayna felt awkward to hear him address Alfred in that way after she learned about his biological parents from the elderly man.
