âPretty fuckinââ¦â Wolfâs eyes fluttered open. His words were weak. He could feel Ninaâs soft skin against his. âFuckinââ¦Vintageâ¦Yeah?
âThose are your first words?â Sabine laughed. âI was expecting âOh shit, Iâm aliveâ.â
âAugments babyâ¦â Wolf smirked. âIâm glad youâre here Ni.â
âShe wouldnât leave your side.â
Nina blushed. âWhat if he woke up while I was gone? I couldnâtâ¦â
âNice,â Wolf gasped and closed his eyes. âIâm so tiredâ¦â
âThen rest,â Sabine sighed. âBut you need to stop pushing yourself so far. Part of being a pilot is knowing your limits.â
âYeah, yeah, I got itâ¦â Wolf replied. âWhat about Sebilleâ¦?â
âIâ¦â Sabine paused. âI havenât gone home yetâ¦Iâve been avoiding it. She hasnât called me thoughâ¦â
âMmmâ¦â Wolf had already fallen asleep.
âAre you going to stay with him, Nina?â
âYes. Where else would I go?â
âI⦠suppose youâve got a point. Iâll see you aroundâ¦â
Ari was resting on the couch when Sabine arrived. She called out Sebilleâs name. There was no answer. She checked all of the rooms. She wasnât there. Sabine tried to call Sebille. There was no response. Sabine slouched down against the wall and wiped the tears from her eyes. Ari walked over and licked her cheek. She wrapped her arms and legs around his body and lay on the floor, crying into his soft mane.
When Wolf awoke, Nina was sleeping soundly next to him. He carefully escaped her grip and showered. When he finished, Nina had roused.
âDid you have pleasant dreams?â
âI uhâ¦Noâ¦â
âSorry, I forgotâ¦â Nina replied meekly.
âItâs fine.â
âWhatâs it like?â
âLike flipping a switch. Orâ¦Traveling forward in time?â Wolf pondered. âI blink, itâs a new day, and Iâm fully rested.â
âThat soundsâ¦â
âNi, I want to show you something. Iâll need access to your neural interface, though. If thatâs alright.â
âYes,â Nina responded as she turned away from Wolf and bent her head to the side. There was a small indent on the back of her skull where something could be plugged in. Wolf sat on the bed behind her and pulled a plug out of his neural interface, then gently stuck it into Ninaâs skull. She took a deep breath and opened her eyes.
âWhat is this?â
âThis isâ¦what I used to dream about,â Wolf spoke softly. The two of them were sitting in a meadow. The grass was green and trees dotted the horizon with fluffy green tufts of leaves. The sun was high in the sky, bathing the land in flickering light. Flowers were blooming and the smell of rain and pollen filled the air.
âItâs soâ¦brightâ¦â
âIâve always wondered what the sun was like. I heard it was just a ball of gas and fire, so I used the closest thing I could think of to simulate it. I knew it wouldnât be like a street light or anything like thatâ¦â
âThis is beautiful. Iâve never seen anything like it,â Nina exclaimed with tears in her eyes.
âThis is where I come when Iâm depressed. Life wasnât really worth living before I became a pilot. I guess I just kind of tried to live as little in the real world as I couldâ¦â Wolf explained as he put his hand on Ninaâs cheek. âFuck, your skin isâ¦warmâ¦and softâ¦â
âSo is yoursâ¦â
âSometimes I regret my augmentsâ¦â Wolfâs voice seemed distant. âI canât hold you like this in the real world. I canât feel your warmth in my hands. If I hold you, will I crush you?â
âYou can still feel my lips,â Nina replied as she gently kissed Wolf. âAnd if youâre afraid to crush me, then let me hold you.â
âI wouldnât trade anything for my augments, butâ¦sometimes I wish Iâd stayed a virgin,â Wolf let out a long sigh. âShall we head back?â
âI want to enjoy this just a little while longer,â Nina replied as she squeezed Wolf in her arms.
âOw, ow, ow! Youâre crushing me!â Wolf laughed.
âSabby?â Wolf called out as he entered her flat with Nina. Ari was laying on the floor, licking up a pool of vomit. There were patches of dried puke in his mane. âSabby, you doing alright?â
âI donât think sheâs doing alright,â Nina replied. The duo followed the sounds of gagging into Sabineâs bathroom. She was sprawled out on the floor in front of the toilet, emptying her bowls periodically into the silver bowl.
âYou sure you should be drinking like that, Sabby? Only a few days until our next match,â Wolf jested.
âSheâs goneâ¦â Sabine spat into the toilet. âSebâs not answering my callsâ¦â
âYouâve still got us,â Nina put her hand on Sabineâs back. Sabine pushed away her hand.
âJusht get the fugg outâ¦â
âSabby, I get youâre down, but-â
âGet out!â Sabine screamed as she pushed Wolf away. Wolf gestured to Nina and began to leave before Sabine started sobbing loudly. âWait! I donât wand to be aloneâ¦â
Wolf smiled gently before grabbing Sabineâs hair and holding it behind her head. âWeâre here for you, just let it all out. Nina, can you get some BJE Detox formula?â
âWhere would it be?â Nina asked as she stood up.
âUhâ¦just ask the robo butler thing.â
âAh, yes!â Ninaâs ears perked up as she headed towards the kitchen.
âThis stuff should clean you up in a few hours, if it performs as advertised,â Wolf explained. âSoâ¦howâs Bastien? He going to be ready for the next round?â
âHeâsh fuggedâ¦â
âBut uhâ¦You can fix him, right?â
âDaveâshâ¦â Sabine stopped and gagged into the bowl. âDaveâsh worging on it. Battery isâ¦Friedâ¦â
âThe fuck were you drinking? Or how much?â Wolf looked around the bathroom for empty bottles, but found none.â
âI finishâ¦Finished off the Data Leakâ¦â
âSabby, that was like a fifth of a bottle,â Wolf laughed out loud. âYou really are a lightweight!â
Nina returned with a sack of grey goop almost identical to the regular Big Juice Energy formula, the only difference being the text on the bag. âThis is it.â
âVintage, letâs take a looksie,â Wolf grabbed the bag and quickly skimmed the text. âNice. Drink this up, Sabby. Youâll be ready to take over for that idiot Dave in no time.â
Sabine clumsily grabbed the bag and tore open the top, then choked down the sludge, gagging after every gulp. âThish tashtes like shid!â
âYeah, nice. Weâre going to leave now because thatâs uhâ¦thatâs basically just a bunch of laxatives and stuff, soâ¦have fun!â Wolf laughed as he ran out of the room.
âIâm never drinking again,â Sabine slouched in Bastienâs cockpit. Wolf was standing on the catwalk behind her.
âHowâs the damage?â
âBastien or me?â
âBoth,â Wolf chuckled.
âIt would be selfish for me to let my personal problems get in the way of work, butâ¦Fuck, Wolf. What am I supposed to do?â
âThe fuck should I know?â Wolf shrugged. âNever been in that position. Justâ¦give it time? Maybe sheâll want to talk. Iâm sure sheâs just as confused as you.â
âI hope so,â Sabine sighed. âAs for this guy⦠All that energy overloaded his battery. Iâll have to replace it entirely.â
âThatâs easy, right?â
âExpensive. Steiner will not be pleased.â
âWe won though, right? Who cares what it cost us? Itâs a fight to the fuckinâ death! She should be happy weâre still alive!â
âThe expenses are starting to pile up. Iâve had to almost double my staff to keep up with the repairs,â Sabine replied as she gestured to the crowd of people scurrying about the hangar. âIâm starting to wonder if itâs really worth itâ¦â
Wolf smiled a toothy grin. âWeâre going to be fuckinâ superstars! Thatâs worth dying for.â
âIt just feels like my life is falling apart,â Sabineâs eyes began to fill with tears. âIâm losing everything important to me, Iâm killing peopleâ¦Iâ¦I donât recognize myself any moreâ¦â
âIf something doesnât scare the shit out of you, is it really worth doing?â
âI donât knowâ¦I justâ¦I want to be aloneâ¦â
âNo prob,â Wolf replied as he began to walk down the catwalk. âIâll always be here Sabby. Remember, I love you. Call me if you need anything.â
Sabine closed the cockpit and let the soft lights wash over her. She closed her eyes and sobbed quietly into her hands. She reached up to the silver locket hanging from the ceiling and flipped it open. The mirror inside was cracked into three pieces. Sabine whispered to herself as she admired the polished surface. âWhat do I doâ¦?â
Wolf slammed back his drink and let out a belch.
âClassy,â Sabine commented.
âYou know, Wolf, Iâve got a favor to ask of you,â Nyx announced.
âWhoa, hold up. What happened to not forming bonds?â
âThat was before I realized you were Wolfgang,â Nyx smiled for a brief moment. âIâm actually a huge fan of your radio show.â
Wolf burst out laughing. âYou? Really? Thatâs so strange!â
âOf course, thereâs nothing else to listen to when Iâve got to spend the night out in the wilderness, or Iâm hunting down a mark.â
âThe soundtrack of a killer,â Sabine jested.
âWhatâs your request?â
âI want to sit in while you do a show.â
âYouâ¦want to be a guest on my show?â
âNo, no, Iâm far tooâ¦â Nyx paused to think. âLetâs go with shy. I just want to watch the magic happen.â
âYeah, no prob!â Wolf exclaimed before his expression suddenly became serious. âBut itâs going to cost you.â
âWhatâs your price?â
âInformation!â
âWhat would you like to know?â
âWhat is your mugen called?â Wolf asked, then frantically added to the question. âAnd why!â
âShinigami, or Hades. The god of death. People call it that because everyone that crosses paths with me dies.â
âOoooh! Spooky!â Wolf laughed. âSwing by my place after the next match and Iâll show you my studio.â
âI canât wait,â Nyxâs lips parted into a toothy smile.
âHey Sab, is thatâ¦â
âSebille!â Sabine shot out of her seat and pushed her way across the crowded bar.
âStay away from me,â Sebille commanded as Sabine approached her.
âWhat are you doing here? Youâre not a pilotâ¦â
âIâve joined a group; theyâre training me to be a pilot.â
âWhy?â
âWhat am I to you, Sabine? Just a pretty face?â
âWhat do you mean? I would do anything for you.â
âApparently not! You took someoneâs life even though I told you not to. Why did you train Wolf to be a pilot and not me?â
âWhat?â
âWhy did you choose that worthless piece of trash over me?â
âIâve known him my entire life, Seb. Why would I want to put you in danger?â
âIâm nothing, Sabine! Iâve been living in your shadow doing nothing with my life! And Iâm going to continue to be nothing unless I get out from beneath you,â tears had begun to stream down Sebilleâs cheeks. âIâm going to do something with my life. Iâm going to become a vampire hunter like Liet!â
âWhat are youâ¦â Sabine noticed something on near Sebilleâs wrist in the dim light. Sabine reached out and grabbed it. âShow me your arm.â
âDonât touch me!â Sebille tried to pull away, but Sabine pulled up her sleeve. The veins in her arm were pitch black and there were small pinpricks all over her arm.
âThatâsâ¦Thatâs fucking poison!â
âThe only way to kill a vampire is to poison it.â
âAre you crazy?! Youâre going to kill yourself!â
âNo! Itâs harmless to humans.â
âYour blood is turning black! How is this supposed to work?â
âIf Iâm bitten, the vampire will die the second my blood hits its tongue.â
âNo,â Sabine shook her head and tried to pull Sebille out of the bar. âNo, no no. Iâm taking you to Steiner, sheâll know how to fix this.â
âNo! I donât want anything to do with you!â Sebille ripped free of Sabineâs grip and ran out of the bar. Sabine returned to her seat beside Wolf.
âThat was uhâ¦â Wolf put his arm around Sabine. âHuhâ¦â
âSheâs going to die,â Sabine sobbed into her hands.
âNah, Iâm sure sheâll be fine.â
âVampire huntersâ¦â
âLet me talk to her, Sabby. Iâll tell her itâs a load of shit. Maybe once she realizes theyâre being used as bloodbags, sheâll redirect thatâ¦Energy.â
âI justâ¦I need to focus. I canât let this distract me,â Sabine replied as she rose from her seat. âIâm going to prepare for the match. Iâllâ¦see you later.â
