âHave you prepared for the first match?â Steiner casually sipped tea behind her desk.
âYeah, Stein, weâre all set,â Wolf pumped his arm in excitement.
âDid I not tell you to speak to me more formally?â
âIncredibly sorry, oh Magnificent Steiner,â Wolf jested.
âMagnificent Steinerâ¦It has been quite some time since anyone has called me thatâ¦â
âWhy are we here anyway, shouldnât we be like, discussing strategy or something?â Wolf inquired.
âThat is exactly why you are here. You are my representative crash, you will meet with me before every match and we will discuss your opponents and how you will destroy them,â Steiner placed her teacup on the desk and stood, walking around to lean on the front of her desk. âAfter all, it is my logo that will be displayed on your mugen.â
âAnd Big Juice Energyâ¦and Sabbyâs workshop. Not to mention any affiliate companies,â Wolfgang remarked. âStarting to look like weâre just one big advertisement for the worldâs stage.â
âDo you have a problem with that?â Sabine asked.
âNah.â
âGood.â
âAs this is the preliminary match, your opponents will most likely be uncoordinated and weak. Their mugen are stock models, no recon present. I would advise against a frontal assault, as you will be fighting outnumbered. Use their lack of recon to your advantage and pick them off until you can overwhelm them with force.â
âSo itâs all on me, huh?â Wolfgangâs voice was filled with joy. âIâm going to be the center of attention!â
âNina, Nyx, any questions?â Sabine looked over at the silent duo. Nyx raised his hand.
âWhen do I get paid?â
âThe end of the match.â
âDo we need to win?â
âNo, but you will receive a bonus if we do,â Steiner smiled gently.
âUnderstood, Iâm going to prepare,â Nyx flexed and tapped his hole-ridden arm as he left the office.
âWhy wasnât Nyx in any of our training sessions?â Nina asked meekly.
Wolfgang responded in a gruff imitation of Nyxâs voice. âIâve got a lifetime of experience, no one can match my skill, Iâm the best damned pilot in all of Asnea, oh and also, I work alone.â
Nina giggled as the group rose to leave.
âDo not disappoint me,â Steiner said sternly.
âIt feels different,â Wolf said solemnly. The eight mugen were arranged in groups of four about a thousand meters apart from each other.
âTense?â Nina asked.
âYeahâ¦â
âYou nervous?â Sabine asked. Her eyes were closed and she was performing breathing exercises in the light glow of the cockpit.
âNah, of course not.â
âGood. Canât have you freezing up in the middle of a fight,â Sabine smirked.
âI can see you, you know,â Wolfgang laughed.
âNina, are you good?â
âYes.â
âNyx?â
âHmm,â Nyx rubbed his stubble. His mugen was quadrupedal, like Ninaâs, but the legs were much longer, like a spider. It also had two arms and a sheathe that held four containers of thick blood. It was holding a massive rifle. âThis is a simulation, yes? What sort of terrain are we fighting in?â
âItâs randomly selected for each match. We wonât know until it starts.â
âYo, what sort of mugen is that, anyway?â
âUgh,â Nyx groaned. âI suppose its technical classification would be recon.â
âI thought recon units couldnât fight?â
âThis one is special. Do you have any more questions?â Nyx responded angrily.
âWhat do you need that blood for? You buy it? Too good to prick yourself?â
âWhy would I pay for something I can produce myself. Look, the match is starting, perhaps youâll find out what theyâre for.â
The lights in the stadium dimmed as Steiner stood high above the arena on an elegant balcony and a spotlight illuminated her crystalline dress. âI do not enjoy drawn out ceremonies. The match will begin shortly.â
The spotlight faded and Steiner retreated back to her office before the arena began to fizzle and the terrain materialized. It was the city streets they had practiced in.
âWhat are the oddsâ¦â Sabine laughed.
âItâs going to be an easy match,â Wolf shouted in excitement as he began to move forward. âWhere are they at, Ni?â
âThey havenât moved yetâ¦â
âEasy prey,â Nyx quietly noted as he began to scale one of the buildings. Wolf weaved around the buildings as he made his way to their location.
âWolf, slow down. We donât want a head on fight,â Sabine commanded as she began to make her way to their position.
âWhat, are we just supposed to wait for them to do something? Thatâs boring, Sabby!â
âMaybe theyâre just getting a feel for their surroundings.â
âIâm in position. Iâve got a visual on the targets,â Nyxâs voice was calm as his mugen lifted one of the massive blood containers and slotted it into the butt of his rifle. âProceeding to eliminate target.â
âHold on, eliminate?â
âYes.â
âWe canât kill anyone or weâll be disqualified.â
Nyx paused for a moment. âI donât do non-lethal.â
âJustâ¦sit this one out, I guess,â Sabine sighed.
âIâm still getting paid, correct?â
âYes.â
âUnderstood,â Nyx unloaded the blood cartridge and returned it to its resting place. âStanding down.â
âSoâ¦two of us against four of them, yeah?â Wolf smiled fiercely. âThat sounds more like it!â
âWolf, we need to approach this carefully. Let me think for a second.â
âWhat about a diversion?â Nina suggested. âWe could make them think that they caught Wolf alone, then ambush them.â
âDonât quite like being bait, but if itâll get us into the action, Iâm all for it!â
âItâll have to work,â Sabine hesitantly responded. âIâll wait behind this building, Wolf. Try to draw them towards me.â
âGot it!â Wolf replied as he dashed towards the position of the enemy mugen. As soon as they were within sight, he skidded to a stop, then immediately turned around and sprinted the other way. They fired a volley of missiles, which connected with the building he ran behind, then began to chase after him as a group.
âTheyâre sticking closely together,â Nina informed Sabine. âYou might be able to take out more than one with some explosives.â
âThatâs one idea,â Sabine smirked. âBut Iâve got something Iâve been wanting to try out.â
Wolf rounded the corner of the building Sabine was hiding behind, then leapt at the building across from it. He sprung off of the building towards his opponents, using his hand cannons to propel himself through the air. Once he was above them, he extended his arm blades and swung them downward, slicing off the arms of one of the mugen. Sabine stepped out from behind the wall and sent Bastienâs fist flying forward with an added boost from her arm thrusters. It connected square in the chest of one of the other mugen, sending it tumbling backwards. Bastienâs fist opened up from the center and receded back onto his arm, with the fingers extending outward like the petals of a flower. A large beam of crimson plasma ebbed out of the hole in his arm, leaving scorch marks on the ground wherever it touched.
âWhoa! Sabby, why canât I have one of those?! What is it, some kind of whip?â
âItâs a prototypeâ¦I just need to calibrate it a little bitâ¦â Sabine said through clenched teeth as she fiddled with some dials. The beam of plasma lifted off the ground and became a solid beam. She charged at the third mugen, adeptly dismembering all of its limbs. The beam flickered and faded immediately afterwards as she fell to her knees.
âSabby!â Wolf cried out as he rushed to her side.
âToo much bloodâ¦â Sabine spoke softly. Her skin was pale and clammy.
âHeh, amateurâ¦â Nyx chuckled to himself as he watched from his perch.
âTwo against one, no problem,â Wolf flexed his arm and put his feet up. âTime to let a superstar show you how itâs done, eh Sab?â
âJust donâtâ¦overdo itâ¦â
âLook whoâs talking,â Wolfgang laughed as he charged at the mugen that Sabine had launched. It was just picking itself up when Wolfgang arrived.
The mugen stood motionless. Wolfgang lunged; arm blades extended. A cloud of smoke exploded from the back of the hostile mugen, obscuring everything around it. Wolfgang retreated, peering into the smoke.
âNina, can you see him?â
âThe smoke must have some sort of thermal shielding,â Nina explained. âI canât make anything out.â
âWhat about the other one?â
âItâsâ¦Itâs gone as well!â
âThat smoke canât last forever, ri-â Wolf was cut off as his mugen was tackled to the ground. His opponent had wrapped its arms around him, restraining all of his movement. Sabine had been subdued at the same time as well.
Wolfâs monitors lit up as a transmission came through from the other mugen. âFor the glory of Riltzgard, I will eradicate Asneaâs strongest warriors!â
âThe fuck?â
âWolf, their mugen are equipped with a self destruct feature! That was their plan all along!â Nina cried out, tears welling up in her eyes.
âSabine, what do we do!?â Wolf cried out. There was no response. âSabine? Sabine?!â
âWeâ¦â Sabine finally sent her transmission. She was laughing uncontrollably. âWeâ¦wonâ¦â
The hostile mugen began to glow. When it seemed they could glow no brighter, they suddenly stopped, then released their grips on Bastien and Uragiru. Teslaguards approached the two hostile mugen, ripping open the cockpits.
âYou are in possession of black-market modifications. You are hereby disqualified from the 2833 Asnean Cup. You are also being charged with attempted murder. Your punishment is death.â
âHold on, I know my rights, I get to choose betw-â the weaselly man was cut off by the Teslaguard.
âThe choice has been made for you.â The teslaguard placed its hand upon the manâs forehead. He cried out in pain for a moment as lightning coursed through the teslaguardâs hand, frying his brain and causing his head to explode like a potato in a microwave. âThank you for your cooperation, please enjoy the rest of your day.â
âWas I just the target of an assassination attempt?!â Wolf shouted at Steiner. âThatâs pretty vintage!â
âNot you specifically,â Steiner began to explain. âThe warriors of Asnea were the target. It seems other continents believe they can use this tournament as an opportunity to eliminate our best pilots. That means the rules have changed.â
âWhat do you meanâ¦â Sabine asked weakly. She was lying on a cushioned panel that had folded out of the wall of Steinerâs office.
âIt means each match is to the death,â Steinerâs eyes were filled with fire. âAnyone who is not willing to die for their country will be allowed to withdraw. It also means that you will not run into any more half-baked crash like that first match.â
âPerhaps I still have a place among you after all,â Nyx butted in.
âI need to think about this, Steinâ¦â Sabine spoke softly. âIâve never killed someone beforeâ¦â
âYou do not have a choice. If you do not participate, you will no longer have a place in my company.â
âIâ¦â Sabine began to speak, then gave up.
âThatâs not fair, Steiner!â Wolf cried out. âYou expect her to die for you?!â
âNo, she is not allowed to die,â Steiner sternly replied. âI expect her to win. I expect her to crush anyone who opposes her.â
âTha-â
âIf Asnea were to cancel or withdraw their crash from the tournament, it would show weakness and fear. That is not something we can afford to do. There is nothing more to talk about. You may leave.â
âWhat a fuckinâ bitch!â Wolf yelled as he consumed his nutritional supplement.
âAre you afraid, Wolf?â Nina asked. She was eating a hearty salad.
âNah, Iâm not going to die.â
âHow can you be so confident?â
âAugments, baby!â Wolf pounded his chest as he spoke. âIâd say the only way someoneâs putting me in the dirt is if they rip out all my parts.â
âIâm afraid of losing you,â Ninaâs voice quivered as small droplets of water formed at the edges of her eyes.
âNiâ¦â Wolf approached Nina and grabbed her chin, lifting her head to meet his gaze. He placed his lips gently against hers as the tears streamed down her face. âYou can drop out if you want. I wonât judge.â
âThat wouldnât solve anythingâ¦â Nina shook her head. âIâll do my best to make sure we all survive.â
âSo what, youâre a sanctioned killer now?!â Sebille screamed.
âI donât have a choice!â
âYou always have a choice, Kiki! I canât believe weâre even having this conversation!â
âIâll lose everything if I leave!â Sabine shouted and slammed her fist against the wall.
âYou donât have to kill anyone. Just incapacitate them like always!â
âThatâs not an option! Have you even been listening?!â
âKikiâ¦I donât want to date a murderer,â Sebilleâs voice had become calm. âIf you kill anyone, I wonât be here any more.â
âDonât do this, Seb.â
âThe choice is yours, Kiki,â Sebille responded as she began to leave Sabineâs abode. âMe or Steiner.â
âFuckinâ hells,â Wolf cried out as he slammed back his drink. He was sitting with Sabine and the rest of his crash. âWe really going to do this?â
âYou can leave, but Iâm not in a position to go against Steiner,â Sabine sighed. âIâll lose everythingâ¦â
âThis is just another contract to me,â Nyx remarked as he sipped blue fluid out of a shot glass. âAs long as Iâm getting paid, Iâll fight with you.â
âIs that your real name?â Wolf asked.
âWhat?â
âNyx. That doesnât sound like your real name.â
âTen thousand creds.â
âThatâs not your name either,â Wolf laughed.
âTen thousand creds for me to answer that question.â
âWhat? Why?â Wolf was confused. âIâm just trying to get to know you, bruv.â
âIâll give you this piece of advice for free,â Nyx smirked slightly. âDonât get too close to your companions. It makes it a little easier when they die.â
âHmmâ¦â Wolf closed his eyes for a moment. âThere, I sent you the creds.â
âNo.â
âWhat is it then?â
âTen thousand creds and Iâll answer that.â
âWolf, youâre not actually going to pay him again?!â Sabine grabbed Wolfâs collar from across the table as she yelled at him. âHeâs going to take all of your money!â
Wolf rubbed the stubble on his chin before responding. âMaybe heâs got a really cool name thoughâ¦â
âI sent you the credsâ¦â Nina spoke meekly.
âNina! What are you doing?!â
âI canât let him take all of Wolfâs moneyâ¦â
âDonât give him yours either!â
âMy name is Vikas.â
âHuhâ¦â Wolf commented and stared off into space. âWhy do-â
âDonât fucking do it!â Sabine shouted.
Nina covered her mouth as she began to giggle. Wolf started his question over. âWhy do you go by Nyx?â
âAre you trying to piss me off, Wolf?!â
âTen thousand creds.â
âYouâre not paying him,â Sabine commanded.
âNo, of course not,â Wolf smiled.
âNeither are you, Nina,â Sabine crossed her arms and looked at the others at the table. They were all looking at her. âOh no. No fucking way!â
