âHowâs the tea? Did I make it right?â Sabine asked Steiner as she cautiously sipped the steaming mahogany fluid.
âIt is fine,â Steiner replied quietly. She sipped the tea and her lips curved slightly upward in satisfaction. âThis tea is special. Do you know why?â
âNo.â
âWhen I was a young woman, I used to share it with my lover. It brings back many fond memories.â
âWhat was he like?â
âStupid,â Steiner replied instantly. âBut he would have done anything for me.â
âHow did he die?â
âHe got in an argument withâ¦â Steiner paused for a moment and sipped her tea. âA close friend.â
âHis friend killed him?â
âI am sorry, I do not wish to talk about this any more.â
âIâm sorry, I understandâ¦â
âHave you heard about the murders recently?â Steiner inquired as she finished her tea and placed the cup on her stone desk.
âYeahâ¦â Sabine thought for a moment. âIs that why you called me here? People say there are vampires roaming the streets.â
âWhat do you think?â
âDidnât Liet Rochben slay all of the vampires?â
âThat is the legend, yes,â Steiner twirled her hair in her fingers as she spoke. âBut vampires are immortal. The master chronomancer simply prevented their regeneration.â
âSoâ¦youâre saying theyâve returned?â
âI suppose Liet must have finally passed, releasing them from stasis.â
âWhat?!â Sabine spit her tea back into her cup. âThat would make him like, a thousand years old!â
âHe could manipulate time. What did you expect?â
âYouâve got a point. What can we do about it?â
âNothing for now. I just want you to know that there is truth to the rumors. Be careful, we can not allow anything to jeopardize the tournament. How is Wolfâs training?â
âHeâs doing quite well. Weâre going to start taking mercenary contracts so he can get some practical experience. The simulations just arenât cutting it any more.â
âThat is good to hear, but make sure you are not just wasting time and money.â
âOf course, youâve got nothing to worry about.â
âThat is all, you may leave now,â Steiner waved her hand and Sabine rose to leave. âThank you for visiting me. Your presence isâ¦refreshing.â
âNo problem. Iâll see you later Stein,â Sabine smiled as she left.
âVampires? Nah, thatâs a load of shit,â Wolf shouted. âYou wanna know what it is? People are getting bled dry by thugs, then tossed in the streets.â
âThat could be true butâ¦â Sabine sat down on the couch next to Wolf. âI believe Steiner. Why would she lie to me?â
âI donât knowâ¦â Wolf slammed his fist into the table, leaving a small dent. âFuckinâ bloodbagsâ¦Thatâs all we areâ¦â
âThugs, vampires, whatever, I just want you to be careful.â
âThanks, Sabby, but you know I can handle myself.â
âItâs not just yourself youâve got to watch out for now. Nina doesnât know this city like you do.â
âDonât worry, Iâll keep her safe,â Wolf smiled and flexed his bionic arm.
âGood, you excited for our first contract?â
âYou kidding? Iâve been looking forward to this for days. What are we doing? Killing a gargath or something?â
âPrecisely,â Sabine replied as she headed toward the exit of Wolfâs flat. âReady to go?â
âNah, let me shower first,â Wolf lifted his arm and fake gagged. âForgot to this morning.â
âAlright, Iâll be prepping the mugen,â Sabine said before she left.
Wolfgang made his way to the bathroom, undressed, and started to shower. As soon as the steam started, he felt soft hands on his back, causing him to jump.
âNi?! Why are you here?â
âItâs more efficient if we bathe together,â Nina smiled softly.
âIâ¦I guess,â Wolfgang covered himself as the sanitizing goop dropped onto the pair. âIs this another thing from Senija?â
âCommunal bathing is quite common,â Ni giggled.
âYeah, that stuff doesnât happen much around here.â
âSorry if I made you uncomfortable,â Nina pouted. âI just miss my homeland.â
âNah, itâs fine,â Wolf patted her head and laughed. âIâm not going to tell you to leave.â
The pair finished bathing, dressed, and left to meet Sabine. She was sitting in Bastienâs cockpit flipping switches and making adjustments to his settings.
âYou good?â Wolf asked.
âYeah, Iâve got something for you before we go,â Sabine reached under her seat and produced two handguns. One was a smaller model that fit in the palm of her hand which she handed to Nina. The larger one she handed to Wolf. âYou might not always be in your pit. Link it to your system, then if you run into something outside of your mugen, point and shoot. The projectile is guided by your neural uplink.â
âWhat about you?â Wolf asked as he tossed the weapon into his mugen. Sabine reached under her seat and brandished a tarnished revolver with a flourish. âKind of old, âinnit?â
âI need something that doesnât rely on augments,â Sabine put her revolver back under the seat.
âI guess soâ¦â Wolf and Nina entered their mugen and started their engines. âDo we need a plan or just go in guns blazing?â
âIâll explain on the way. Letâs head toward the gate.â
âThis is going to be my first time outside of the wallsâ¦â Wolfâs voice quivered for a moment as the group left the hangar. âIâm kind of excited.â
âItâs a first for me, too. The contract is to kill a gargath thatâs been terrorizing one of the local farms,â Sabine explained as they approached the large gate in the massive wall that surrounded the city. Loud hydraulic sounds could be heard as the doors lurched open. Sabine tapped a few buttons on Bastienâs holoscreen before continuing. âIâve sent you the specs for the mission. We need to retrieve its heart.â
âWhoa, thatâs a gargath?!â Wolf exclaimed as he examined the images that Sabine had sent. The beast was slightly larger than his mugen and had massive shell-like scales all along its back. It was quadrupedal with a long, quilled tail. It had legs like thick tree trunks with razer claws at the bottom. âHow do we kill it?â
âItâs going to be difficult. The monster has three hearts. If we can stop the two auxiliary hearts, it should immobilize it. From there we just cut it open and get the heart.â
âDoes it matter if we damage the primary heart?â Wolf inquired.
âItâs unlikely we could harm the primary heart,â Nina replied. âIts encased in a thick layer of bone.â
âYou know your stuff, Nina,â Sabine complimented as the group ventured out into the black abyss.
âI didnât realize it would be so dark,â Wolf observed. âI guess Iâd never really thought about how it would look without the lights of the cityâ¦â
âNinaâs recon is going to be exceptionally useful here. Weâll be relying on you, okay?â
âI wonât let you down,â Nina chimed.
âSo uhâ¦where are we going?â Wolf asked.
âItâs been sighted about a kilometer from the city. It should be obvious once we find it.â
âHuh, alright,â Wolf replied. âHow come Ninaâs not slowing us down? I thought recon mugen were slow.â
âI need to anchor my mugen when weâre in combat,â Nina explained. âItâs too stressful to pilot the drone, communicate necessary information, and try to navigate the battlefield at the same time. If I absolutely need to move, then youâll lose any support I provide.â
âHmmâ¦I think I understand now.â
âHow much are we getting paid?â
âFifty thousand creds,â Sabine quietly responded. She had closed her eyes and was breathing softly.
âWhoa, thatâs pretty good!â
âEh, itâs not bad.â
âWe canât all be filthy rich like you,â Wolfgang laughed.
âYou always say that, but I put all of my income back into my mugen. I need this just as much as you do.â
âNina, whatâs your take?â
âAny work is good work.â
âAlright, weâre here,â Sabine stated as Bastien stopped abruptly. âDo youâ¦see or hear anything?â
âItâs dead silent,â Wolf stated as he scanned the horizon using the flood lights on his mugen. They were standing in an open wasteland. Craters littered the landscape. âThereâs nothingâ¦thingâs massive, how can we not see it?â
âMy scanners are picking up a massive heat signature directly on top of us,â Nina pointed out as she began to anchor her mugen. âPerhaps its ben-â
Nina was cut off by an explosion of earth as the gargath emerged from the soil, knocking Uragiru off balance. The monstrosity let out a blood curdling roar as it flung its full body weight towards Bastien. Sabine responded instantly by firing three rockets at its from left leg, causing it to buckle and fall at her feet.
âWolf, youâll need to wound the hearts, Iâll try to keep it immobilized,â Sabine instructed as she began to fire her hand cannons at its ankles, leaving small wounds that barely pierced its thick hide.
âOne heart is near the tail, the other is in the center of its mass. The primary heart is close to its neck. Thermal imaging sent to your feed,â Nina explained.
âNot a problem!â Wolf shouted in excitement as Uragiru sprinted towards the tail end of the beast. He positioned himself above where the heart was and prepared to extend his arm blades, but the beast had other plans. It wrapped its thick, spiny tail around Uragiruâs legs and pulled them out from beneath him in an attempt to fling the mugen away. Wolf responded by extending his arm blades and digging them into the beastâs carapace, causing it to tear its own flesh and scales. The beast let out a cry of pain and bit down on Bastienâs left leg, crushing it completely. âSabine!â
âIâll be fine, just take out those hearts!â Sabine shouted as she put the monster into a headlock.
Wolf grabbed the beastâs tail with one hand and blasted his hand cannon until he could blast no more, creating a crater at itâs base. He used his arm blades to saw through the rest of it, then tossed the tail to the side. After retracting his arm blades, he repositioned himself above the heart, then extended them, impaling the beast and causing a fountain of blood to spray out of the wound after Wolf retracted the blades again. The beastâs rear legs collapsed under its weight as Wolf made his way to the next heart. The gargath put up almost no resistance this time as he plunged his blades into its gut, piercing the second heart. The beast was now lying helplessly on the ground as Sabine lifted its throat.
âIâm sorry big guy,â she whispered as she plunged Bastienâs arm into its chest, wrenching the massive heart from its body. The enormous organ was covered in a thick stonelike shell with a few holes for the ventricles, which were now leaking blood.
âFuck yeah, baby!â Wolf cried out in excitement. âThis is nothing like the simulations!â
âIt could have gone better, but Iâm glad it didnât go worse,â Sabine replied as she steadied Bastien on his remaining leg. âCome over here, Iâm going to need some help walking back.â
âYou got it, Sab.â
Nina readied her mugen for travel and joined the others before speaking. âYou didnât hear me scream when it bit Bastienâs leg, did youâ¦?â
Wolf let out a short burst of laughter. âNah, but I wish I had.â
The group continued to talk about the highlights of their battle as they made their way back to Asnea.
~
ââ¦and remember,â Wolf paused as he sat at the bar in the Valkyrie. The crowd of people chanted along as he finished his catch phrase. âYouâve got Wolfgang in your brain.â
âWe havenât even had our first match yet,â Sabine smiled and put her hand on Wolfâs shoulder. âYet youâre already famous.â
âI canât believe they were playing my show here this whole time!â Wolf slammed back his drink. âAnd here I was thinking no one listened to it.â
âAre you ready for our first match?â
âCome on, Sabby, youâve seen me on our contracts. Iâve been ready for weeks.â
âI suppose youâve done better than expected,â Sabine had a glowing smile on her face.
âSabbyâ¦â Wolfâs expression became solemn. âI want to tell you something.â
âThen just tell me, idiot,â Sabine laughed.
âI love you, you know that, right?â Wolf paused for a moment before signalling Molly for another drink. âNot like that. I justâ¦I wouldnât be here if it wasnât for you. Iâd still be fucked out my head in the lower district. I want you to know how much that means to me, how much having you here means to me. Youâre the closest thing Iâve got to family.â
âI know that, Wolf, I love you too! Youâre like a brother to me.â
âDonât let Sebille hear you say that, âWolfâs expression returned to its usual state. âHow are things with you two, anyway?â
âNot goodâ¦â Sabine frowned. âBetween our training, my duties at the hangar, and Steiner, I havenât had any time to spend with Sebille. Sheâs not happy at all.â
âHave you told her you love her?â Wolf laughed.
âThatâs the thing, she keeps telling me that if you truly care for someone, youâll make time,â Sabine stared into her crystal glass for a moment before taking a sip. âItâs got me thinking maybe I donât love her. Last time we spoke she got mad at me for having tea with Steiner instead of spending time with her.â
âYou bailed on her for Stein?â
âItâs not like we had plans and besides, I owe everything to Steiner, she raised me!â Sabine finished her drink in one gulp, then began to mimic Sebilleâs voice. âJust once it would be nice if youâd cancel plans with Steiner instead of me!â
Wolfgang burst out laughing. âSheâs got a point, you know.â
âI feel like Iâm avoiding her, like I donât even want to go home any more because Sebille will be there to scold me.â
âI dunno what to say, Sabby. Iâve never been in that situation before,â Wolf looked pensive for a moment, before a huge smile stretched across his face. âFollow your heart?â
âHa ha,â Sabineâs face was solid as stone. âWhat about Nina? You two have been awfully close lately.â
âThatâs uhâ¦I dunno, Sabby. I donât know what it is.â
âHow so?â
âWe eat together, we bathe together, we sleep togetherâ¦â Wolf thought for a moment. âWe do everything together, really. Thatâs a relationship, right?â
âYeah, pretty much.â
âBut see, thatâs the thing. She doesnât say anything about feelings or romance. Itâs always âThis is what we do in Senijaâ.â
âHow do you feel towards her?â
âSheâs cute.â
âThatâs it? Sheâs cute?â Sabine chuckled. âIâm going to need a little more to go on than that.â
âShe smells good and I like her voice,â Wolfgang looked up into the lights of the bar. âAnd she does this thing where she kind of bounces on her tip toes when she wants somethingâ¦â
âI think Iâve gathered enough information,â Sabine giggled and twirled her hair. âI wouldnât call it love, but youâre definitely interested. Have you talked to her about it?â
âNo, I didnât really put any thought into it until you brought it up just nowâ¦â Wolfâs voice trailed off. âIn my entire life, Iâve never even considered dating someoneâ¦â
âHold onâ¦Wolfâ¦â Sabine grew a mischievous smirk. âYouâre not a virgin now, are you?â
Wolfâs face reddened immediately as he pointed to his augments. âCourse Iâm not a virgin, Sabby. You see my augs every day!â
âThatâs not what I meant and you know it!â
âIâ¦Maybeâ¦â Wolf admitted. âIâve never been sober long enough to think about it.â
âI never would have guessed, youâre very charismatic. Doesnât seem like it would be a problem for you.â
âIt couldnât hurt, right? I should just talk to her, huhâ¦â
âIf you want to, but I think you should go for it.â
âThanks, Sabby, I hope you and Sebille sort out whatever youâve got going on.â
âI hope so tooâ¦â
