The pair entered the Valkyrie to find themselves on the top floor of a multi level establishment. There were four floors in total, the first three having a hole in the middle that revealed a dance floor at the bottom. Neon bands ran around the walls of each floor, giving ever-changing light to the murky bar. Loud music blasted over the chatter of the crowd as they made their way down to the bottom floor.
âHold on a sec,â Wolfgang shouted. âI know this song. This isâ¦this is me! I made this!â
âYou make music? Itâs not bad.â
âYeah, canât stand the shit these other artists churn out, so I make my own. How the fuck did it end up in here? I didnât think anyone listened to it.â
âDo you play it on your show?â
âOf course!â
âI feel like you just answered your own question.â
âWait, whatâs that?!â Wolfgang exclaimed as he pointed towards a row of masks on a bar. âTheyâve got inhalers here? Thatâs some hard shit!â
Wolfgang ran over and pressed the mask to his face, then took a deep breath.
âWas it everything you expected it to be?â Sabine laughed.
âThe fuckâ¦Itâs justâ¦air,â Wolfgang pressed the mask up to his face and took another breath. âBut itâs like, cool and crisp. Itâs clean. I didnât know air could smell like that.â
âCareful, breath too much and itâll make you sick. Treat it like alcohol,â Sabine continued heading down to the bottom. Her mind wandered back to earlier that morning. âNo, wait, donât. Justâ¦be careful with it.â
âSo all these people are pilots? How come Iâve never seen some of them before?â
âBeing a pilot doesnât mean competing. A lot of these people are mercs.â
âIsnât that illegal?â
âDepends on the jobs they take. Now that I think about it, I suppose some of these people arenât pilots. Wingmen are allowed as well.â
âWhatâs a wingman do?â
âProvide support for the pilot, whether itâs on foot or in the pit.â
âHold up, youâre telling me these people have the balls to leave the city without a mugen?â
âThatâs exactly what Iâm telling you,â Sabine smiled widely as she sat at the bar on the bottom floor. âYou remember why weâre here?â
âI donât think you told me.â
âScouting talent. You look for someone to pilot recon.â
âAnd you?â
âSomeone to suit our needs,â Sabine patted Wolfgang on the shoulder before disappearing into the crowd. Wolfgang leaned back and put his elbows on the bar while he scanned the rambunctious horde of people.
âLooking for someone in particular?â the bartender asked.
âNo, not really. Dunno what Iâm looking for, actually.â
âYou want a drink?â
âYâknow, I really shouldnât,â Wolf turned to face the bartender. âMaybe a shot of Data Leak, you wonât tell Sabby, will you?â
âNah, none of my business,â the bartender replied as she poured the shot. The fluid trickled from the bottle in a distorted blur. When it sat in the glass it seemed to vibrate softly. She slid the shot to Wolf, who downed it instantly. âNameâs Molly.â
âNice, thanks Mol. Sabbyâs going to be paying for that one,â Wolfgang slid the glass back to Molly as he ran into the crowd. âI think Iâve found who Iâm looking for, catch ya later.â
Wolf made his way to the far corner of the bar to a single booth where a small girl was sitting alone. She had a dark blue, almost black, bob cut with large cat ears on the top of her head. Her eyes were bright yellow, with slits for pupils. Her skin was almost as pale as Sabineâs. She was wearing a dark green turtleneck sweater with a bowtie around her neck. A bracelet that looked like a small collar with a bell on it was fastened to her wrist. Her legs were adorned with a black, frilly skirt with leggings underneath.
âNice augs,â Wolf shouted as he reached over and rubbed one of her large cat ears.
âTheyâre n-â the girlâs face scrunched up as her cheeks turned red. âNyaâ¦â
âWhoa!â Wolfgang pulled his hand back and sat down in the booth across from her. âSorry, I didnât realizeâ¦â
âItâs fine,â the woman replied as she rubbed her ear. Her voice was shrill. âI should be used to it by now, but Iâm not.â
âNameâs Wolfgang.â
âDid you want something?â
âOh, no introduction? Well, alright. Iâm looking for a pilot. Recon.â
âWhat for?â
âTo become a fuckinâ superstar! What else?!â
âIâ¦donât understandâ¦â
âMugen pro circuit. Itâs going to be teams of four now, as far as I understand.â
âSo the rumors were trueâ¦Who else would be on the squad?â
âActually, the uh, technical term is crash.â
âThat doesnât answer my questionâ¦â
âMe, Sabine, and someone else. Weâre looking for some filler.â
â
Sabine?â
âSabine Randgris? Yup, thatâs the one.â
âI do happen to specialize in recon, and yes, I would be interested. My name is Nina. Whatâs the pay look like?â
âDunno, Ni, youâll have to ask Sabby.â
âThen perhaps we should go find her.â
âGood idea, exceptâ¦Iâm not sure where we were supposed to meet,â Wolf rubbed the back of his head, then stood up and grabbed Ninaâs hand, pulling her with him. âCome on, letâs wait at the bar.â
âI see youâve returned with Nina. If I had known, I could have pointed you in her direction,â Mol stated.
âOh, do you know where Sabine is?â
âNope.â
âI guess weâll just have to kill time somehow. Maybe a drink or two? Itâs on meâ¦er⦠Sabine. Iâll have aâ¦uh, Reverse Protocol.â
âFirewall.â
âSurprised you got something that strong.â
âIâm no lightweight,â Nina responded as Molly finished making the drinks.
âI see, I see. So where are you from? Those are some interesting features youâve got.â
âSenija. Itâs overseas.â
âNever heard of it. But then again, I donât really know much beyond these walls.â
âI take it you grew up here?â
Wolfgang sipped his drink while he spoke. âYeah, born and raised, never knew my parents, grew up in the gutter. Sabbyâs been the only thing keeping me together, really. Know you didnât ask, but a little background info never hurt. Everyone loves a sob story, yeah?â
âWhatâs your take on the city?â
âYou first. I donât want to muddy your opinion. Butâ¦youâre in the upper district, so youâre probably doing well for yourself.â
âQuite the contrary. Iâve been here for two weeks, looking for work the entire time with no luck. My funds have run dry, I have enough money for one more night, after thatâ¦â
âYouâre a pilot, arenât you? Work should be easy.â
âRecon doesnât kill gargaths. Anything Iâve been offered is kill this, kill that, save my son, et cetera. Recon doesnât get me anything alone. Nyan! I was so stupid to come here by myself.â
âCouldnât you team up with someone?â
âWhy split the pot when they can do it alone? Anyone I asked laughed in my face.â
âNow I see why you chose such a strong drink,â Wolfgang laughed heartily. âCityâs shit. If you arenât rich or famous, youâre little more than a bloodbag.â
âInteresting point of view,â Nina responded as she finished her drink. She pushed her glass away and rested her head on her hand. âWhy me?â
âHuh?â
âWhyâd you speak to me?â
âA cute girl sitting alone in the corner of a bar? Definitely my first choice,â Wolfgang smirked. âI guess it was just luck you happened to specialize in recon.â
âSlacking off, I shouldâve known,â Sabine commented as she put her arm on Wolfgangâs shoulder. Behind her stood a tall grizzled old man, his face was soft, yet stern and lined with stubble. His eyes were missing, in their place was a glowing, red visor. His arms were covered in countless reddened holes where needles had pricked his skin. âThis is Nyx. Is she our final member?â
âYeah, I mean, if you think Ninaâs good.â
âI trust your judgement. The tournament doesnât start until the summer. Weâll start practicing two months before. Until then youâre free to do as you will.â
âI- uhâ¦â Nina stuttered as Nyx disappeared into the crowd.
âSabby, can we talk?â
âSure,â Sabine sat down at the bar.
âEr, no likeâ¦come with me,â Wolfgang grabbed Sabine and pulled her into the crowd.
âYou didnât buy her a drink, did you?â
âYeah, why?â
âThereâs no way sheâs old enough to drink.â
âSheâs in here, isnât she?â
âYeah, but-â
âThatâs not the point,â Wolf interrupted. âWeâve been talking and sheâs in a tight spot. No money, nowhere to stay. No one wants to hire her. You see where Iâm going with this?â
âYeah. She can stay with you, split your wage.â
âWhoa, Iâm getting paid?â Wolfgangâs face lit up. âFuckinâ vintage.â
âOf course. I donât know how youâre making a living now but itâs obviously not much. Youâre technically an employee of Steiner Industries now.â
âI didnât sign anything th-â Wolf stopped, his brain finally processing the first half of Sabineâs statement. âWhat do you mean stay with me?â
âYouâll get a flat similar to mine. Plenty of room for the two of you.â
âHuhâ¦Iâve never lived with anyone before.â
âShall we break the news? She looks kind of⦠sad,â Sabine pointed out as they returned to the bar. Nina had her head in her arms on the counter. âHow tall are you?â
âFive feet,â Ninaâs muffled replied could barely be heard as she left her head buried in her arms.
âYou sure youâre old enough to be here?â
âIâm twenty.â
âI talked to Sabby, she said you can stay with me and split my wage.â
Ninaâs ears perked up and her head rose. âI-â
âYou donât need to say anything. Iâve been in your shoes my whole damned life. Now I have a chance to step into some better onesâ¦I canât just let someone else take my place.â
Tears began to well up in Ninaâs eyes as she lunged at Wolf, embracing him in a vicelike hug.
âCareful or youâll fry my circs,â Wolf reached up and began to pat her head.
