Nick had no answers for me. Only more questions. I couldnât be mad at him for interrogating me, he was the alpha after all. Someone attacked his territory; his pack, he wanted answers. Didnât we all? I acted weaker than I was and he instantly stopped the line of questioning, telling me to rest as he left my room. I did as my alpha told me too and let the sleep take over my body.
Nightmares of the night my mother was taken from me plagued my sleep in a new way. Now my mother wasnât the only innocent I couldnât save: Derek was too. I turned my head to my hospital roomâs door. Thankfully, my hearing was recovering well and I could eavesdrop on the wolves hushing outside my room.
âThe explosives were the same ones used in the law office attack from ten years ago. Nick had me cross check the records.â For a Beta, Daniel wasnât being too stealthy as he conversed with an Omega. âThis wasnât a random attack by rogues, this was planned and deliberate.â
âWho was the target?â I recognized Alexâs voice.
âItâs hard to say, but there is a common denominator between the two.â
âEmma.â
âNickâs ordered a protective detail until we figure this out.â
âAnd if we donât? I hate to say it, Daniel, but the last attackâs trail went cold.â
âLets not get carried away.â I heard the sound of a hand coming into contact with fabric. Maybe a touching hand to the shoulder?
âYou know sheâs not going to like this.â Alex was talking about me.
âAlphaâs orders.â I heard footsteps getting farther away as Danielâs scent became less and less clear.
âYou canât be dumb enough to think I didnât hear all of that?â I called from my room. Alex chuckled as he stepped into my room.
âHow are you feeling?â He was polite.
âIâd be a hell of a lot better if I wasnât here.â I smiled back at him. âDid you guys get any updates on Derek?â
âHeâs resting. His surgery went well from what I hear. â
âIs he getting a protective order too, or am I the only lucky one?â
âThatâs classified information, Miss Clark.â Alex took the seat Nick was occupying.
âWhat do you know, Alex?â I narrowed my eyes at him.
âNot as much as you think.â He rubbed his eyes. âWeâre on a need-to-know basis and if youâre not the Alpha or the Beta, apparently there isnât much we need to know.â
âNickâs being tight lipped. That means heâs either worried or clueless.â
âOr both.â Alex stood up and went to my bedside. âReally Emma, how are you feeling? You just got blown up and youâre more worried about everything else that isnât you.â
âI want to know whoâs attacking my pack, Alex.â I looked up at the monitors keeping track of my stats. âI want to know who has a ten year vendetta against my pack.â I turned back to him. âIf the same type of explosives were used then it was the same people.â
âWe donât know that, Emma. The explosives used in both attacks could just be the most common type of explosives rogues can get their hands on.â
âYouâre and Omega for a reason, I know youâre not that stupid to believe that.â
âYou know, thatâs twice now youâve insulted my intelligence.â We smiled at each other.
âHelp me up.â
âNow youâre the stupid one.â
âAlexââ
âEmma, you were just involved in an explosion less than 24 hours ago, youâre not getting out of this bed.â He placed a warning hand on my shoulder.
âI have to pee.â
âOh.â He blushed and looked around, anywhere that wasnât in my direction. âIâll grab a nurse.â The second he was out the door I rolled over to the nightstand and practically ripped the drawer off itâs hinges. A bag of my belongings rested beside a bible. Just what I needed. I tore the bag open and pulled out my cell phone. Fourteen missed calls across the screen, all from my dad. Did anyone tell him?
âYou need to use the restroom?â A blonde nurse stood beside Alex in the doorway.
âDoes my dad know where I am?â I ignored her question and Alexâs face turned a deep red. âWhy wouldnât someone call my dad?â I felt something I hadnât felt in a long time: tears welling up in my eyes.
âEmma, Iâm sorry.â Alex slid past the nurse and tried to take my hand but I pulled it away.
âWhy, Alex? Why wouldnât someone call my dad? Iâm in the hospital for fuckâs sake!â The nurse turned and left, knowing she wasnât welcome.
âEmma, please, calm down.â
âCalm down?â I felt a tear slip down my cheek. âWhat if I died? What if I died just like my mom? My dad would be alone and no one thought to even take a second to call him!?â Alexâs head fell to the floor as I came to a sudden realization. âHe told you not to.â I whispered.
âHe told us to spread the word that it was an electrical accident. No one was around and no one got hurt.â
âWhy would he want to cover it up?â
âHe didnât want the pack to panic. To think that whoever started that fire ten years ago was back to finish it.â
âI want to see Nick right now.â
