When I was ten, I fell for Ellie Kent.
It was seven years ago, in October. To be exact: the fifteenth of October at 2:29 pm.
My family had just moved into the minuscule town of Devin, at the edge of California. School was brutal. I had no friends and I missed living in the city. I missed the loud traffic. I even missed the polluted air. I missed all my old friends.
It was a Friday when I met her. I'd been sitting on a bench at the corner of the playground, head buried in a book. Two kids, natives to the area, had strode up to me.
"Geek Boy!" they chanted. "Geek Boy!"
One, with blonde hair gelled into spikes, ripped my book from my grasp. "Hey, nerd! What's so special about this book, huh?"
I stood, reaching for it. "Give it back!"
"What was that Geek Boy?" he mocked.
"He said give it back."
Then she was there. With dainty fingers she plucked it from his hand. She was taller than them, the result of an early growth spurt. Her golden ponytail swayed in the wind. One arm was locked on her hip while she glared down at the boys with eyes the colour of a clear blue ocean.
"Get lost you butts!"
The two boys blushed before sprinting away.
I stared after them in awe, before turning back to the girl.
She handed me the book. "William Johnson, right?" She jutted out her hand. "Hi, I'm Ellie Kent."
And when the smile slid onto her face, when her lips spread into a blinding white grin, I knew that I'd fallen for her.
