Matthew then went to wash his hands in the bathroom, scrubbing them with a bar of hand soap. Taking off his coat, he approached again.
Jayden asked, âAre you so idle at the company, why are you back so soon?â. Matthew was speechless once again.
âRest up, son.â
So, Matthew could only sit on the couch and watch him.
Jessica put the folded clothes on the couch and asked, âMatthew, youâre back so early to see your son, arenât you?â
Matthew replied, âBack then, after learning that Amanda and Andrew were my children, I was very excited. However, Iâm still very excited now.â
This little baby was his son.
After the baby was born, the doctor told them that the baby had been sent to the neonatal department. Matthew put on a clean gown and followed the doctor to see the baby: he was lying in an incubator, as small as a big mouse. He was bruised all over. The medical monitoring equipment was checking his vitals. It was a true miracle that he survived and recovered so quickly.
Matthew had to praise the wonder of life.
He didnât believe in God, or Buddha, or Jesus. Nor did he believe in anyone who showed up because he wanted to have someone to mentally trust.
However, when he saw his baby, he felt very grateful to God for sending him into this world.
If the baby had died, he would blame himself and suffer all his life.
He had signed the agreement at a critical moment.
âWhere is Lola?â
He hadnât seen Dolores after he got home.
âSheâs gone to see Theresa.â As she spoke, Jessica let out a sigh. She thought Theresa was too unfortunate and pitiful.
âLook! Sheâs smiling,â Jayden said.
The baby still had his eyes closed. He was sleeping, but just now, Jayden saw him smile.
Coral trotted over to take a look.
Just now, the babyâs lips had already flattened. Coral was about to ask. Then, she saw the baby part his lips and really smile.
âOops, heâs so adorable. I wonder what heâs dreaming about now that heâs smiling so happily. Have you been dreaming about your wife, little guy?â Jessica picked up the pile of folded clothes and set about pulling them up. She laughed and said, âHeâs so little now.â
âIn twenty years heâll be a handsome boy. Iâm sure heâll have a girlfriend,â Coral said.
Jessica laughed and thought Coral had thought too much.
Just then, Coral let out a sigh and added, âI wonder if I could still see the scene then.â
Jessica said, âYou can live to be a hundred.â Coral smiled.
In the afternoon, Andrea and Amanda returned home after school. Therefore, Amanda occupied her younger brother. She lay face down on the edge of the bed.
She tapped his cheeks and rubbed his head from time to time.
She would say, âThis is my little brother.â
Andrew was used to it by now, so he was pretty calm. Sitting next to Matthew with his arms folded across his chest, he asked, âDad, how do you feel after being a father?â
Matthew calmly replied, âItâs not the first time Iâve been a father. Iâm used to it.
How do you feel after becoming a big brother?â he added.
Andrew calmly replied, âItâs not the first time Iâve been a big brother. Iâm used to it.â
Matthew choked up.
In the evening, Dolores did not return for dinner. The children worked on their chores while Jayden watched them.
Coral wanted to hold the baby, so Jessica did the dishes.
The baby drank the formula. Her little lips wrapped tightly around the pacifier, sucking hard. Soon he finished drinking twenty milliliters.
Coral put down the bottle and wiped his lips. The baby had just woken up. After drinking the milk, he fell asleep again.
âWow⦠you are like a piglet. After you eat, you just sleep.â
Jessica reached over to pick up the empty mickey bottle. She would clean it before putting it in the disinfection cabinet. Hearing Coralâs words, she said, âItâs just a little baby, so it can only sleep and eat. That way it will grow up fast.â
Coral smiled, âWho does this baby look like?â
âHe looks like Matthew,â Jessica said.
Coral said, âHe looks like Mrs. Nelson. They say, if a son looks like his mother, heâll be lucky enough.â
âHeâs lucky enough, no matter who he looks like. Our whole family is at his service now. Besides, he will be quite handsome since he looks like Matthew.â With a smile, Jessica gave a glimpse of the baby in Coralâs arms.
Normally, a mother-in-law liked her son-in-law more and more. Jessica was no exception. In her opinion, Matthew was perfect.
âGood heavens. Miss Lennon, I canât believe you said that. Do you dislike Mrs. Nelson because sheâs not as beautiful as Mr. Nelson?â Coral looked at her and couldnât believe she despised her own daughter.
Jessica, however, did not despise Dolores. She simply thought she was a child. If he looked like Dolores, he would be quite boyish. Therefore, she thought it best that the baby follow Matthewâs looks: handsome and manly.
âNo matter who he looks like in the future, he wonât be ugly,â Coral said.
Jessie agreed with a smile and took the bottle.
In the evening, Dolores would take care of the baby herself. Jessica offered to help, but Dolores insisted on taking care of the baby for a while.
When bedtime came, Coral took the baby upstairs.
Matthew was alone in the bedroom. He had showered and changed into his pajamas. He planned to read some papers by the window.
He was sitting cross-legged elegantly. Half of his handsome face was in shadow, and the other hand under the light, which showed his sharp silhouette.
Coral put the baby in the cradle and whispered, âMrs. Nelson is not back yet.â
âSheâll be back later,â Dolores called Matthew earlier and told him she would keep Theresa company longer, since no one was taking care of her.
Coral left the bedroom and closed the door.
A while later, the baby suddenly started crying in the crib.
