Matthew rubbed his glabella knowing he could no longer do anything about Abbott. Dolores was already seven months pregnant and the doctor suggested an induced labor at seven and a half months, he didn’t have much time left to find and consult another doctor.

She made a call to the phone on the desk.

The hospital Dolores went to was top-notch nationally, but he was still worried. His wife and baby were too important for him to neglect.

He made an appointment with Mr. Thompson.

After the call, he pulled out his phone, left the office and loosened his tie helplessly as he looked up numbers on his phone. He instructed the overseas branch manager to consult the doctors there. He had confidence in the local medical team, but needed backup.

Once the call was connected, he explained Dolores’ condition. “I’ll send the details.” Matthew ended the call once the other side responded with a yes.

He pressed for the elevator and Abbott to come over while he waited.

“Mr. Nelson.”

Matthew looked at him, “Are you in a hurry?”

“No…”

“Think about it and call me,” Matthew said as he stepped into the elevator.

Abbott looked at the floor. He wanted to be honest, but he was a man of dignity.

Could I say that I’d slept with Emma, that she’d taken naked pictures of me and threatened me with it?

I was a man and I thought this could only happen to women.

However, Emma used the trick.

She scratched her head and couldn’t say it.

It was too embarrassing.

Matthew started his car and pulled out of the parking lot. The street was illuminated by colored lights, which made the skyscraper city seem even more lively compared to the daytime.

He headed straight for the villa.

He parked the car and saw someone sitting on the garden bench as he walked back to the house. It was Dolores.

He approached her.

She didn’t turn around but recognized his footsteps: “You’re home.” Matthew nodded and sat down next to her.

Dolores leaned over and rested her head on his shoulders, giving a glance at the starry sky.

After a while, she murmured, “I remember my contractions lasting all night when I gave birth to Andrew and Amanda. I kept bleeding non-stop and almost collapsed. When the doctor holds two tiny, slightly purple bodies in his hands, which was the first time I saw them, my heart ached and I got scared. I was afraid that the two tiny, weak babies would end up like me, with no one to care for them, facing their future in the delivery room. They were smaller compared to a normal baby, being twins. Amanda was even weaker. I struggled to fill her void of not having a father’s love. They are the most precious part of me, no matter when, no matter what. I expect you to be the same way, putting the children first.”

She knew she couldn’t keep her health condition a secret, hence her telling Matthew how important the children were to her.

Andrew, Amanda and the baby in her womb were equally important to her.

She could risk her life giving birth to Andrew and Amanda, she could sacrifice her life for this baby.

Matthew’s body stiffened. He pulled her into his arms, kissing her hair. He knew it clearly and understood her words. But…

Dolores continued softly, “The doctor said I need labor induction, but the preemie is high risk…”

She couldn’t hide it from Matthew, hence she chose to be honest.

“You are more important…”

“Don’t you understand after everything I’ve said?”

Dolores sat up in his arms; she wanted him to understand how important children were to her.

“I understand.” Matthew looked at her deeply, “Children are important to me too.

But if I have to choose, I will choose you, without you there will be no children for me, he thought.

“You still haven’t understood, there will be too much unknown risk in the baby being born premature, I’d rather risk myself than the baby,” Dolores said weakly and helplessly.

“Dolores!” cried Matthew as he grabbed her by the shoulders. His eyes darkened with grief, “This is not absolute, there is a ninety percent chance the baby will be born healthy.”

He said ninety instead of the eighty mentioned by the doctor just to reassure Dolores.

Tears began to roll down her cheeks.

“Why am I pregnant?” She couldn’t understand Matthew’s thoughts.

Even just ten percent was enough to worry her.

What if she really did fall into that ten percent?

Matthew drew her trembling body into his arms, “I didn’t know your body isn’t fit to bear a child. If I knew, I’d never get you pregnant.”

He patted her back lightly, “I’m looking for the best solution, trust me, okay?”

“I’m scared,” she said, sobbing.

“I know.” Matthew tightened his embrace. He was scared, too. Dolores worried about the baby as a mother, while he worried as a father.

But he was a man, so he had to be strong to face what was coming.
