He had just opened his eyes and was not used to the light. He closed them and opened them again. It took him a few repetitions before he was fully awake. He remembered falling into a river. Then, he was almost run over by a small wooden boat. After that, he was hit. He could still feel the pain in the back of his head when he thought about it now.
He moved his body. He tried to sit up to see his surroundings. He remembered that the man who hit him was worried because he was blackmailing him, thatâs why he hit him. However, how could he take him to the hospital? It didnât make sense.
He realized he was being pushed when he tried to move his legs. He lowered his head and took a look. It was a familiar face.
Jasmine?
Why is she here?
Maybe it was because he saw her suddenly, so his heart was beating fast.
Jasmine also woke up slowly. She saw that someone was looking at her. She rubbed her eyes and said in surprise, âAre you awake?â.
Boyce looked at her for a long time before he said, âYou? Why are you here?â
âYou passed out and my students saw you, I brought you to the hospital, Iâll be the one to ask you, why are you here?â Jasmine sat up and rubbed her arms that were numb from padding them all night, âIs your head still hurting, are you hungry?â
Boyce didnât say anything. He merely looked at her and gave an irrelevant answer, âWhy did you drop out of college?â
Jasmine looked down, âI donât want to study anymore.â
She used to work hard for her mother and to become a woman who could live up to her, but then, her mother had passed away and after hearing Officer Millerâs words, she understood that she could not become someone who could help her no matter how hard she tried.
He didnât know who else he could work for. Suddenly, he lost all motivation and direction in his life.
After her bewilderment, she hoped that what she had learned would not be in vain, so she came to work as a teacher here. She did not charge any tuition. She had some savings that she had saved before.
While working as a teacher, she also worked part-time on the Internet, teaching online classes to middle and high school students to earn money, which she used to buy books such as notebooks for her students, and partly to live on.
Although she was not very wealthy, she was a good calculator. She did not spend money indiscriminately. Besides, living expenses in the field were not very high. If she taught more classes, she would still have extra money left over.
âItâs a shame to give up on a good college like that.â Boyce couldnât understand her thoughts.
Jasmine smiled, âYouâre not my father, leave me alone, are you?â.
After she left B-Town, she changed her calling card and even cut all connections with classmates she got along with.
He thought that since he had decided to leave, he would drop everything.
She thought she would never see him again in her life. âYouâ¦â
âJasmine.â Keith walked in as he was carrying breakfast.
Keith was 21, a sophomore, tall and thin, wearing a very casual white T-shirt, his skin white and full of vitality.
Boyce wanted to ask Jasmine to lend him the phone so he could call Matthew to fill him in, but was interrupted by Keith and then forgot about it.
Seeing Keith bring Jasmine her breakfast and also seeing him smile tenderly at her, countless questions arose in his heart.
âWho is this man?
âWhy are you coming so early?â Jasmine did not expect him to come so early to the hospital, how early did he have to get up to come so early from the village?
Keith smiled, âLet me guess, you didnât eat anything yesterday, am I right?â. Jasmine said nothing.
âIf you donât say anything, then Iâve guessed right. Knowing youâre not going to eat well, Iâll bring you breakfast early so you can eat.â Keith put the breakfast on the table.
Seeing that Boyce had woken up, he said, âHi.â Boyce replied.
âI bought breakfast for you to eat, it wonât taste good when it gets cold later.â He opened the box of breakfast he had bought. There was congee and fried scones.
He handed the fried scones to Jasmine, âThis is delicious. When I was in county school, I ate this every morning.â
Keith was a big, sunny boy, clean and comfortable to look at, especially when he smiled, he was gentle and kind. Jasmine unconsciously lifted the corner of her lips and said, âThank you.â
Boyce glanced at Jasmineâs smile toward Keith and frowned.
âDonât always say thank you to me.â Keith didnât like her taking off on him.
âThe word thank you is like treating me like a stranger.â
Jasmine smiled faintly, âIâll say no more, have you eaten?â
âI ate when I bought it,â Keith replied.
Jasmine walked in and handed the fried bun to Boyce, âKeith said this is delicious, try it.â
Boyce initially didnât want to eat it and wanted her to eat it, but seeing Keithâs expression, she reached out and took one. He wasnât sure what the intent of this action was, but he did.
The fried buns were filled with vegetables, but the flavor was really very good, the bottom was fried until crispy, the skin was thin and there were a lot of fillings.
The filling was made with leeks, noodles and eggs. Shrimp skin was also added, which gave it the fragrant flavor of the leeks and the freshness of the shrimp skin.
Jasmine opened the lid of the congee and held it out to him, âYouâre going to choke if you eat this, arenât you? Eat it with the congee.â
Boyce looked at her and asked, âYouâve given it all up to eat, have you?â.
Jasmine smiled and said, âIâm not hungry yet, if I am, Iâll go buy something, Iâm not an injured person, I can walk around anytime I want.â
Boyce didnât accept it, âI donât like congee, you eat it.â
Jasmine put down the congee, âIâll pour you a glass of waterâ¦â
âNo need to wait on me, eat the congee first.â Boyce interrupted her.
Suddenly, she realized she was overzealous and making him uncomfortable. She quickly withdrew her hands, picked up the congee and took a sip.
Boyce handed her the fried bun, âYou eat it.â Then he explained, âI have no appetite.â
âBut how can you not eat?â. Jasmine didnât understand his intention and said, âYou have to eat, even if you donât have an appetite.â
She picked up a fried bun and popped it into her mouth. Boyce froze for a moment. Soon, Jasmine realized that her action was a bit inappropriate.
As she was about to withdraw her hand, Boyce grabbed it. In the process, he accidentally touched Jasmineâs hand. They withdrew their hands at almost the same time.
It was as if they had received an electric shock.
Keith could see that they seemed to know each other very well.
Besides, Jasmine was very kind to him, so he took the initiative to say, âJasmine, you must not have rested well at the hospital, youâll go back to sleep after lunch, Iâll stay here.â
âI donât need someone to take care of me.â Before Jasmine could say anything, Boyce spoke first. He swallowed the fried bun Jasmine handed him and lifted the blanket to get out of bed.
Jasmine put down the congee and said, âYou canât get out of bed, the doctor said you have to be under observation for 48 hours.â
âItâs okay, I know my body well.â insisted Boyce. He poured himself a glass of water and drank it.
âDo you want to leave? Let me call a cab for you,â Keith said.
Boyce raised his head and looked at Keith, who seemed to chase him away.
Why does he want to chase me away? Boyce glanced at Jasmine.
Is it because of her?
Is he in love?
Yet she said she liked him, had she changed her mind so quickly?
He couldnât help but feel depressed.
âI canât leave yet.â Boyce looked at Keith and said, âHer mother had entrusted me to take care of her. I have to know if sheâs living well now before I can leave without worrying.â
