He quickly squatted down and reached up to brush the hair away from the corner of his forehead. Sure enough, it was Boyceâs face â why was he here?
âBoyce.â Jasmine stroked his face. There was no sign that he had woken up.
She called out anxiously, âChris, go quickly and call someone.â
Chris looked at Jasmine blankly, âMs. Burke, do you know him?â
âGo and call someone!â Jasmine was so anxious she couldnât help but raise her voice.
âOkay, Iâm going.â Chris ran off quickly. He tripped over a stone on the path and fell to the ground. It was covered in dirt, but he didnât have time to clean it up. He immediately got up and ran.
Jasmine tried to pick him up, but his body was too heavy to lift him off the ground. Seeing the dried blood on his head, she felt very sad and her eyes reddened.
âMiss Burke.â The one who came was another teacher, named Keith, a college student.
Most of the people in this town had the surname Weeks.
Jasmine said excitedly, as if she had found someone who could save her, âQuick, help me get him to the hospital.â
Keith squatted down and said, âIâll take him to town.â
With Jasmineâs help, Keith had a hard time getting Boyce up. Chris said, âIâll ask the director to drive the tricycle.â After saying this, he took off running toward the school.
Keith had a lot of sweat on his head, âJasmine, I think you are very nervous, do you know him well?â. Jasmine said yes.
Keith looked down and continued on his way. Soon, the director came to pick them up on a tricycle, âHop on everyone.â
A tricycle was a three-wheeled vehicle with a compartment in the back for hauling crops during peak season.
There was a seat next to the driverâs seat where people could sit. However, it was narrow. Jasmine climbed into the carriage and said, âPut him in the back.â
She sat down and let Boyceâs head rest in her lap.
Keith also climbed in, sat in the back and said, âIâll help you.â
Jasmine nodded.
The road was not smooth and it was bumpy. Jasmine was concerned about causing secondary damage to Boyce and said to Keith, âCan you help me hold his body?â
Keith nodded and sat up to place Boyceâs body in her lap. He used his arms to brace the body to reduce some of the shock sensations.
When they left town, the road was flat and their speed was faster as there were no potholes.
It took them over an hour to reach the countyâs number 2 peopleâs hospital, where Boyce was successfully admitted to the operating room with the help of the medical staff.
âMiss Burke, who is he?â the director asked.
The situation was so urgent that she didnât have time to ask. When he got off the tricycle, he saw that Jasmine was very worried and her face was pale.
Jasmine lowered her head and said, âA very good friend.â
âWhy is he here?â Keith pursed his lips, âHas he come looking for you?â.
He liked Jasmine the first time he saw her. Seeing her nervous and anxious face for this man, he felt sad.
Jasmine shook her head, âHeâs a police officer. I think heâs here for his job.â
This was the only reason she could think of.
Otherwise, why would he show up here for no reason?
âThank you,â Jasmine said sincerely. If it wasnât for their help, I wouldnât be able to send Boyce to the hospital so quickly.
If not for them, I donât know what the situation would be now.
âYouâre welcome, youâre welcome, we all know each other very well and you teach the students for free, we should thank you.â The director smiled. The wrinkles at the corners of his eyes were deep, but still kind.
âThatâs right, no need to be so polite to us.â Keith bought water and handed it to her. Jasmine took it and said thank you.
She didnât open it or drink it, but clutched it in her hand and glanced occasionally toward the operating room.
âDonât worry too much.â Keith patted her shoulder and comforted her.
Jasmine nodded.
After about two hours or so, the operating room door opened. The doctor came out and asked, âWho is your family member?â
They all looked at each other for a moment before Jasmine stepped forward, âIâm her friend.â
âWhere is your family member?â the doctor asked.
Jasmine said, âI canât reach them either, if thereâs anything, you can talk to me.â
âThe patientâs main injury is in the brain. We have ascertained that it is not life-threatening, but the medical conditions here are limited, we cannot rule out the possibility of a concussion. If you want to be examined further, you have to go to the city hospital. Itâs up to you whether you go or not.â
Jasmine did not hesitate and said, âOf course we will go to a big hospitalâ¦â
âDoctor, when will the patient wake up?â Keith stepped forward and interrupted Jasmineâs words.
âItâs up to the patientâs will to decide whether he goes to the hospital or not.
If he wakes up sooner, let him decide that himself.â
Jasmine had paid the money when he was admitted to the hospital. If she went to a large hospital, Jasmine would have to spend more money.
Jasmine wasnât thinking for herself, but he had to think for her.
âIf there is no accident, she will probably wake up tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow at the latest,â the doctor replied.
Keith told Jasmine, âItâs best to wait until she wakes up and see what she thinks, after all, youâre not her direct relative, so youâd better not cause trouble.â
Jasmine pursed her lips.
âYouâre a college student, how much savings do you have?â. Keith continued to persuade.
Jasmine really didnât have much money left and let herself be persuaded by Keith, after all, she wasnât directly related to Boyce, so it wasnât good to make a decision for him. Luckily, he could wake up tomorrow. This way, she could ask his opinion.
âThe patient needs to be under observation in the hospital for forty-eight hours, so they can proceed with inpatient procedures,â the doctor said.
Jasmine said, âIâm going now.â
âWait, Iâll go, you stay here.â Keith pulled her.
Jasmine didnât want to bother him too much, but he was determined, so he said, âThank you.â
Keith smiled gently at her, âYouâre welcome.â
Soon, Boyce was sent to the living room. There were three other beds on the ward, all occupied by patients. There were also places for companions to stay, change clothes and receive food in boxes. They were placed all over the place. The room was not tidy. There was also the smell of disinfectant. Such a room was already considered good here.
After all, conditions were limited.
After the arrangements, Jasmine asked them to go back: âI will stay here alone, you go back first, the students are still in school. We canât leave them alone.â
âLet the principal come back, Iâll stay here with you,â Keith said.
Jasmine still felt bad, âYou can go back. I can stay here alone. Besides, thereâs no place for you to rest.â
There really wasnât room here, he thought, âThen itâs okay, call me anytime if thereâs anything.â
Jasmine said, âOkay.â
Each bed was equipped with a chair, but there was no bed. Jasmine saw that Boyceâs head wound had been bandaged, but there was still dried blood on his neck that had not been cleaned. She bought a basin and a towel. She then filled the basin with hot water and helped him clean his face and hands.
Then she stayed in the living room and did not come out again.
She was not hungry for the night. After buying water, she continued to sit by his bedside to give him some attention.
At midnight, she fell asleep next to the bed.
In the morning, the streets were quiet. The first rays of morning light broke through the clouds. It seemed to awaken the sleeping people. One by one, the streets filled with people. The business of the breakfast peddlers improved.
Boyce slowly opened his eyes. All that came into his view was the unfamiliar surroundings.
