John shot Charles a fierce look. While his face was unrecognizable, his fierce look could be seen.
He knew full well that if he admitted, he would die, so he could only deny it. âNo, they didnât interrogate me. I was beaten because I intimidated that woman. That woman appeared to be Armand Bernieâs girlfriend.â
After Armand hit him, he understood the reason why Armand was angry. That woman mattered a lot to him and she must be his girlfriend. Thatâs why he was so angry that he wanted to kill him.
John hugged Declanâs leg. âYou have to believe me. That damn cripple just wants to cause discord. You mustnât believe him.â
Declan squatted down, lifted his chin, narrowed his eyes and asked, âThey really didnât question you?â
John shook his head. âNo, even if they did, I wouldnât say anything that went against you.â
Declan snorted. âIf you dare betray me, Iâll throw you into the sea to feed the fish!â Declanâs wicked words made John flinch.
Charles watched them silently and didnât feel provoked when the others hit his weak spot. He had calmed toward him after hearing it several times.
âIâve kept my promise, shouldnât Mr. Bailey give me back my man now?â
Declan turned around, looked at him and gave him a direction to find his man on his own. He asked his subordinates to send John to the hospital.
Charles didnât leave immediately, but asked, âI donât suppose Mr. Bailey hurt my man?â
Declan shoved his hands in his pockets and smiled, âYouâre a cripple, what if he really did? I wonât if youâre willing to talk.â
He questioned the man named Tom and asked where John had gone. The latter kept his mouth tightly shut and said nothing. When he asked him if Charles and Matthew knew each other, he also refused to say anything. Declan got angry and asked someone to hit him.
Charles slowly clenched his fists on the armrests and rumbled, âItâs just someone looking out for me. He doesnât know anything, how dare you do that.â.
Declan stepped closer and looked him up and down. Finally, he fixed his eyes on his legs, chuckled and soon hid his smile. âWhy, you want to get back at me?â
âIf youâre willing to apologize to Tom, I might consider forgiving you.â Charles ignored her eyes directly.
âYou, youâre overestimating yourself!â Declan paid Charles no attention at all. The scoundrel from White City was nothing in B-town.
He asked his men to take John to the hospital.
Charlesâ eyes were cold and grim. He stared at Declan and in the end said nothing. He turned his wheelchair and headed for the car.
He understood that it was useless to try to look tough. Action speaks louder than words.
He climbed into the car with the driverâs help. Then he asked the driver to take him to the place where Tom was being held captive.
He did not look well. Tiana sat down next to him and took his hand. âAll right. Letâs go back to White City today.â
She didnât want to be here. She was afraid something else would happen.
Charles smiled casually and reached out to touch her cheek. âWhy, donât you love your parents anymore?â
âI can come back when I miss them, and they could come visit me, too.â She was inexplicably upset. She just wanted to leave quickly. âThatâs what my mother said too. She was hoping we could go to White City.â Charles glanced at Mrs. Meyer.
âThatâs what I thought. This place is full of trouble. Youâd better take Tiana to White City. Your father and I could visit when we miss you.â Mrs. Meyer expressed her attitude.
Anyway, it wasnât far from White City, and transportation was convenient now.
âThatâs fine. I want to spend more time with you.â Charles smiled, no one could read his true thoughts.
Mrs. Meyer feared he was worried about what had happened this time and said, âWell, since we were the ones who lost track of the person first, itâs reasonable for him to be angry. Everything is fine now, so letâs pretend nothing happened.â
Mrs. Meyer did not directly ask about Charles and Matthewâs relationship in front of her daughter.
If they had no relationship, Charles would not give Declanâs man to Matthew.
Even if they did have something to do with each other, Matthew was not acting too friendly with Charles.
She wasnât sure what the relationship was between Charles and Matthew.
âI know, Mom. The reason I want to stay is not because of Declan, but because I want to spend more time with you and Dad with Tiana. You only have one daughter, and since youâve now let me take care of her, I hope I can treat you with filial piety with her.â The reason he said that was to stay in B-town. Tom was beaten up because of him, and he couldnât pretend nothing had happened. Declan must apologize to Tom!
Charles limped. The reason he could run such a large company and his ability was compelling was because he had great insight. He knew that Mrs. Meyer must doubt the relationship between him and Matthew.
He then explained, âMr. Nelson and I are friends. But because I have done something wrong, he has held a grudge against me. This time, I have taken the initiative to give him the person he wants. I just want to show him goodwill, hoping that we can turn the fight into friendship. However, I didnât expect Declan to catch me and ask him for the person, leading to this.â
Whether true or false, I just had to explain things reasonably and let Mrs. Meyer believe it.
I had no intention of deceiving. I couldnât tell them what I thought of Dolores, could I? Besides, I would do my best to forget her and treat Tiana well in the future.
Mrs. Meyer said, âIs that so? No wonder their attitude was so cold when I asked them for the person.â
Charles did not utter a word. By this time, the driver had driven the car to its destination, a building nearing completion. There, Tom was kept by Declan.
He asked Mrs. Meyer and Tiana to wait in the car and got out to meet Tom with the driver.
Declan had already been there and gone, leaving Tom alone inside.
There was a wall completely built without cement. The wall was made up of red bricks. There was all kinds of construction debris scattered on the ground, and Tom was left among that messy junk.
Tom was severely beaten, but his face was not injured. The wounds were all over his body. When his guards left, he was dropped to the ground.
The driver went to untie his rope. He opened his eyes and saw Charles. âMr. White.â
Charles asked with concern, âAre you all right?â
Tom couldnât get up. He could only stand up with the driverâs help.
His body ached when he moved. He said, âThe injuries will not cost me my life.â
Charles said, âIâll take you to the hospital.â
The driver took him to the car. Mrs. Meyer said, âPlease leave me and Tiana in the driveway.â
Charles said, âOkay, Iâll take you to the hospital.â
Thatâs what Mrs. Meyer meant. Knowing that Tom was going to the hospital, it was inappropriate for her and Tiana to follow him.
âI want to go to the hospital with Charles.â Tiana didnât want to go home with Mrs. Meyer. She preferred to stay with Charles.
Charles did not refuse.
However, Mrs. Meyer did not want her daughter hanging around outside. âPlease go home to Mommy.â
Tiana took Charlesâ hand and shook her head. âMama, please go back alone. I will escort Charles.â
Her attitude was firm and Mrs. Meyer could not force her any further. She sighed and agreed.
They dropped Mrs. Meyer off at a busy place where it was easy to hail a cab.
After saying goodbye to Mrs. Meyer, Charles asked the driver to drive to the hospital. Tom was admitted to the hospital. The doctor checked him out and said that there was no life-threatening situation, that it was all external injuries.
Knowing that Tomâs situation was not critical, Charles left the hospital and paid a nurse to care for Tom.
Indeed, he had no power in B-town, but that didnât mean he could consent that his man had been beaten.
Tom had stood by her side as her family, how could she let it go?
The enemy of your enemy is your friend.
Matthew happened to be Declanâs enemy. It might be a time for them to cooperate.
He came to the WY Group, but didnât find Matthew.
Meanwhile, Matthew and Boyce had gone to a private club when they learned Declan was there.
