Mrs. Meyer looked at her daughter and said, âItâs already late at night, itâs not good for you to stay here.â
By then, she could see that the relationship between Charles and them was not as good as she had thought.
If they were good friends, how could they remain this calm even after learning that Charles had been kidnapped?
âI couldnât sleep even if I went back, Mom. Iâm worried about Charles.â Even if Tiana didnât know how Dolores felt about Charles, she was sure Dolores would never hurt Charles.
âTiana.â Mrs. Meyer feared that her naïve daughter would be taken advantage of if left alone.
âYou can come back, Mama,â Tiana said in a determined tone.
Mrs. Meyer was at a loss for ideas on how to convince her daughter, so all she said was, âIâll pick you up tomorrow morning.â
âOkay.â promised Tiana instantly.
Matthew frowned, it seemed he didnât want Tiana to stay there, let alone take time away from Dolores. âItâs already late, Iâll have it delivered to you tomorrow. All of you, please come back today.â
âCan you tell Dolores I want to see her?â Tiana knew very well that Matthew didnât want her there, but she was worried about Charles. Only Dolores could help him, so she couldnât leave yet.
âTiana.â Mrs. Meyer wanted to convince her, but before she could finish her sentence, she was interrupted by Tiana.
Tiana said, âLeave me alone, Mom.â
âAre you silly, donât you know how to read the situation? Itâs clear youâre not wanted here.â Mrs. Meyer was a little annoyed by her daughterâs persistence in saying those hurtful words. However, she immediately regretted her choice of words.
âIâm sorry Tiana, I didnât mean it like thatâ¦â
gαâηÏνððsâ¤com is your gateway to fiction âItâs okay, I know Iâm silly.â Tiana began to cry as she felt devastated. She didnât mind other people calling her names, but what hurt her the most was that her own family said that to her.
âCome in.â Dolores, who was standing in the door frame, said to Tiana.
Tiana heard that familiar voice calling her.
She turned, saw Dolores and ran to her. She wiped her tears and said to Dolores with a smile, âDolores, Iâm sorry to have disturbed you at this time of night. Charles is gone, Iâm worried about him. I canât sleep well, but I have no friends to chat with me.â
Dolores knew she was an honest girl. She took his hand and replied, âDonât worry, you donât bother me at all. After all, you already call me Dolores. Itâs my duty to take care of you.â
Once she finished the sentence, she turned her eyes on Mrs. Meyer, who was looking at Tiana with concern. Although the first time Dolores met her was unpleasant to say the least, for Tianaâs sake, she decided not to bother her about it. After some thought, although Mrs. Meyerâs attitude was unnecessarily harsh, it was due to her motherly love and not wanting her daughter to be harmed.
Parents under heaven must have had it tough.
âI will take good care of her,â Dolores told Mrs. Meyer.
Mrs. Meyer nodded and replied, âI thank you very much. Iâm sorry about last time.â
âDonât mention it. Tiana will be safe here, you have my word.â
Mrs. Meyer thanked her again, she was relieved after seeing how Dolores treated Tiana. She said to Tiana, âTiana, mommy is leaving.â
Tiana nodded and replied, âOkay, Iâll be back tomorrow morning.â
Mrs. Meyer was speechless, where would Tiana find a car around here?
âIâll have my driver take her back.â Dolores said as if she could read her mind.
âThank you very much.â Mrs. Meyer thanked her sincerely.
Dolores took Tiana by the hand and drove her home with a smile on her face. Theresa was sitting on a couch in the living room when Dolores told her all about the current situation. When she learned what was going on, she didnât want to upset anyone, so she was fine with everything.
âTell Mr. Nelson, let him release it.â Theresa didnât want Dolores to be beholden to Charles either, since everyone knew Charlesâ intentions.
âHeâll take care of this, so you donât have to think about it anymore. Iâll help you to your room.â Dolores said as she approached Tiana.
âIâll help you, Dolores. You shouldnât move around too much when you are pregnant.â Tiana said as she saw the bandages on Theresaâs leg. It was obvious that she was hurt, so Tiana supported her arm with her body.
Theresa looked at Dolores with eyes that silently asked her who was the girl who was very willing to help her move around the house.
Dolores introduced Tiana to her, âThatâs Charlesâ newlywed, Tiana. Sheâs a good girl.â
Theresa nodded and replied, âShe seems nice, yes. Very naive, too.
When they got to Theresaâs room, Dolores handed her a glass of water and said, âTake the medication.â
Theresa ate the medicine and replied, âYou guys go do your business, Iâll go to sleep.â
Dolores nodded, âCall me if you need anything.â
âCall for you, no. I sure donât want Mr. Nelson to hate me. Iâll call Coral, or the new maid.â Theresa pursed her lips, âYour husband would turn me inside out if I upset you.â
Dolores glared at her, âYes, yes, go to sleep now. You spend all day talking nonsense like some Armand.â
When Theresa heard Armandâs name, her mood immediately soured and she replied, âIâll sleep.â
Dolores tucked in the blanket as she apologized in a soft voice, âIâm sorry, I didnât mean to mention it.â
âI know, you should rest first too. Donât let my godson tire you out.â Theresa didnât get angry, she was simply upset to hear Armandâs name.
Dolores accepted it with a small laugh.
She closed the door to Theresaâs room after she and Tiana left the room.
She asked Tiana: âHave you had dinner yet?â.
Tiana shook her head, âI havenât. Iâm worried about Charles, so I canât eat.â
âYou need to have a full stomach to have enough energy to wait for him. Here are some leftovers you can eat.â Dolores said to Coral, âBring me a clean bowl!â.
Coral brought them the bowl and said, âItâs a rare occasion when everyone was able to get together to eat, itâs sad that it was interrupted so abruptly. Look, there was plenty of food left over.â
Tiana lowered her head, âIâm sorry.â
âItâs not your fault, Alisa wasnât talking about you.â Dolores comforted Tiana. Alisa wasnât picking on Tiana, she was simply telling the truth, that dinner had been interrupted, and she felt bad about it.
Dolores brought her some food and said, âEat something first, you donât want Charles to worry about you, do you?â.
Tiana picked up some chopsticks and ate the food Dolores gave her.
She didnât want Charles to worry about her, she didnât want him to feel sorry for her either. Actually, he was the one who was in the worst situation, as he couldnât be together with the one he loved.
âDolores, Charles loves you, doesnât he?â
Dolores immediately felt anxious. She glanced at Tiana and explained, âTianaâ¦â
âDolores.â Tiana raised her head and looked at her. She added in a serious tone, âYou donât need to explain, I understand, but I donât hate or dislike you because of that. Youâre beautiful and intelligent, itâs normal for me to love you. But he has said he will do everything he can to dislike you so that he will like me more. I want to be the woman who makes his eyes shine.â
Dolores was speechless as she gave Tiana a silent glance.
âDolores, I donât have any siblings, so can I treat you as my real sister?â.
Tiana looked at her with sad eyes, âNo one wants to be my friend because Iâm not smart. Only you and Charles donât reject me.â
Dolores played with her hair and reassured her, âYou are kind and smart, no one is going to reject you. At least, I like you very much. You must remember to live for yourself, donât worry about what others say about you. You are unique, so as long as you are happy, do what you want and say what you want. If one day you get sick, do you think someone can replace you?â.
Tiana shook her head, âNo.â
âExactly. If others talk bad about you, itâs not worth paying attention to them. No matter how much the words hurt, no one else could bear the pain for you. So, no matter what others say, as long as you live well, nothing happens.â
Tiana glanced at Dolores and remembered her motherâs sayings. Her mother always told her to think before she spoke, to say what she wanted to say or not. She would also tell Tiana to behave well, so that others would respect her and she wouldnât be embarrassed about anything.
But today, Dolores asked her to be herself.
She agreed with Dolores, she should not live under the influence of others.
After all, she was the only one who knew whether she was happy or sad, and no one else could carry her pain for her.
Tiana nodded vigorously, âI understand, Dolores.
Thank you, Dolores!â She said as she hugged Dolores enthusiastically. Dolores patted her back and said, âDonât worry, Charles will be fine.â
âMhmm.â Tiana nodded in response.
Dolores kept Tiana company by talking to her a lot to cheer her up so she wouldnât worry too much about Charles.
When it got late, Dolores let her sleep in the guest room.
Since they had hired more maids, there were no more spare rooms downstairs. Dolores asked Matthew to take the two children upstairs so that Tiana could sleep in her room for the night.
They were both sound asleep, they did nothing but nudge when Matthew took them upstairs.
Dolores felt tired, she wanted to sleep next to the children without a bath.
Matthew placed a tub of hot water next to the bed and said, âCome, wash your feet before you go to sleep.â
Dolores sat up and obeyed. Then he asked, âAre you going to let go of him?â.
Matthew washed her legs. He saw that her legs were thin and long, on the smaller side when it comes to legs, and they were pale. Her toes were like little buds. He was massaging her sole and calf when he asked, âAre your legs swollen?â
She touched her legs to check before replying, âI donât think so.â
âIâve read that pregnant women get swollen limbs.â
âThat happens at seven or eight months pregnant,â Dolores corrected him.
Mathew acted surprised, âI see.â
Dolores nudged him lightly with her feet, âDonât try to change the subject. Iâm asking you to drop it.â
It was only then that Matthew answered her question, as he purposely changed the subject to avoid talking about Charles.
Matthew caught his nudging feet, âYou tell me, why do I hate him so much? I really hope Declan gets rid of him so I donât have to worry when I see his face again.â
