Armand quickly hid behind Dolores as he noticed Boyceâs fury, âIâm just telling the truth, but you deny it, Iâm sure Jasmine likes you, otherwise she wouldnât care so much when you got hurt. Age is not a problem at all, look at Dolores and Matthew, there is a difference of eight years, but they are doing fine.â
Dolores turned to Armand, âYouâre talking about Boyce, why bring us in?â. She didnât like talk of the past.
Indeed, she was young at the time, at eighteen she should be in college, but she had already married.
Boyce seized the opportunity, âHeâs full of shit, isnât he? It never changes.â
Armand glared at Boyce, âDonât take this opportunity to attack me, I may not be able to physically fight you, but I can get help.â
Dolores patted Armand on the shoulder, âKeep your voice down, Theresa might hear you.â
âIf Armand knew what Theresa said today, I wonder if he could still act so childish.â thought Dolores.
Theresaâs name worked like a charm on Armand, he shut up immediately.
âHa, is there something youâre afraid of?â scoffed Boyce.
âGet lost!â Armand threw himself on the couch without another word.
Dolores held up two bottles of liquor and told them, âDinner is ready, letâs eat.â
She put the liquors on the table and went to Theresaâs room to help her bathe and dress. Then he held her as he tiptoed to the living room, avoiding hurting her wound on the way. Armand got up to help, but stopped when he noticed that Theresa wasnât even looking at him.
Dolores helped her to the dining room table, Andrew immediately pulled out a chair, âBe careful, Renee.â
Theresa patted his head, smiling, âYouâll be very famous among the girls in the future.â
Andrew waved and said, âI only need one, too many women will cause too much trouble.â
His words made everyone laugh. Dolores pinched his cheek, âStop talking nonsense.â
âItâs true,â Andrew defended himself with a growl, âYou and Dad argue once every other day, donât you?â.
âWhat did you say?â his voice was too low, Dolores missed it.
Andrew quickly shook it off, âI said I understand, there will be no more nonsense.â
Coral brought the last plate to the table as Dolores settled them, âLetâs eat.â
Boyce and Armand walked over together.
âWhat a feast.â The whole table was full of appetizing food, like a hotel feast.
Boyce smiled, âThank you, Dolores.â
When he finished setting the silverware, she looked up and said, âItâs to celebrate your promotion, itâs worth it.â
Boyce was a little embarrassed, it wasnât like he had been promoted to boss, just assistant.
Matthew came downstairs when everyone was already seated, he sat down in the main seat. Dolores opened the liquor and said, âThe first glass should be for Boyce.â
Boyce got up and took the bottle from Dolores, âLet me do it.â He couldnât let her pour him the drink.
Dolores didnât insist and sat down. âHonestly Boyce, who is Jasmine?â she asked smiling.
She didnât get to ask now, but she was still curious about Jasmine.
Boyce was mature and stable, it was rare for him to associate with a woman, he didnât have many female friends.
Boyce froze, âHasnât this topic already passed?â.
Armand put his glass in front of Boyce indicating for him to fill it, âDo you want me to bring her over here?â
âCan you shut up?â Boyce gave him a fierce look, âCanât you shut up for a while? Donât you realize Theresa is right in front of you?â Armand was speechless as Andrew and Amanda laughed.
It was amusing to watch Armand be speechless.
Boyce filled Matthewâs glass as well before setting the bottle down and explaining to Dolores, âI want to have a family too and Iâm not young anymore, but Jasmine is really a no no, sheâs too young for me.â
âBoyce is a reliable man, I think he could definitely find his perfect match,â Theresa said.
âI wish,â Boyce smiled.
âIâm just stating the fact, gosh, I missed the opportunity, otherwise Iâd be happy to be your girlfriend.â He put on a rueful face and ignored the change of mood at the table, perhaps he knew it, but chose to ignore it.
Theresa continued, âSomeone told me that marriage is like a second birth for a woman, the first choice is wrong and the second must be wise. If she marries a scum, she will suffer for life. This is very true, but someone like Boyce could never be a slag.â
Boyce automatically glanced at Armand.
Armand stared at Theresa. âHow could she utter words that would pierce his heart no matter the place and situation?â
Boyce wanted to advise Theresa, but he couldnât find words.
Armand was responsible for what was happening to Theresa, so he had no ground to defend him. He could only come out of this clean, âSay what you want, but please leave me out of this misunderstanding, one should never touch a friendâs partner, I am well aware of that.â
Theresa smiled, âLook at your expression of fear, I know my condition.â
Boyce immediately explained, âI didnât mean thatâ¦â
He didnât mean to discriminate and he didnât say it because he thought she wasnât pure.
âWhat did you mean then, do you like me too?â interrupted Theresa.
Boyce was speechless. âI shouldnât have come, how can I explain this?â
Dolores slapped Theresaâs hand lightly, âThatâs enough.â
âIâm just kidding, Iâm just teasing Boyce,â Theresa said, smiling.
Boyce wore a serious expression, âPlease donât joke about this again in the future.â
Others who didnât know him could easily misinterpret that it was true, after all it was a touchy subject.
âAll right, letâs eat.â Dolores tried to change the mood by presenting the dishes, âThe middle one is salt goose, Coral said itâs delicious, come on, letâs try it.â
Salt goose is pickled with salt during the winter. It is then cut into small pieces and simmered for two hours in a stew along with ingredients such as wolfberry and ginseng. The bitter and salty taste of the meat combine well. It had a special aroma.
He took a piece for his son.
âI want one too.â Amanda thought she had been forgotten.
Dolores didnât forget her, but Andrew was closer, so she picked one for him first, she couldnât pick two pieces at once.
Matthew took a bite of goose and put it on his daughterâs plate.
âDadâs the best, now Mom only wants Andrew,â she complained as she blinked.
âCan Mom take two pieces at a time?â asked Matthew gently.
Amanda shook her head, âNo.â
Her response was quick this time, âI know, I know Mommy loves me too, she said she would take me to the pet store.â
Then she picked up the meat and began to eat. The meat was tender and full of ginseng flavor, âYummy,â he said.
âEat up, Renee, itâs tasty,â Andrew reminded Theresa as she ate.
Theresa smiled, âYou are so good to me, you never forget about me, look how tasty you eat, let me try some too.â
She picked up a piece of meat, tasted it and said, âItâs delicious.â The children were good at livening up the atmosphere.
The atmosphere around the table was getting better and better, apart from Armand, who was not as talkative as usual, and was still drinking quietly.
The doorbell rang in the middle of dinner, Coral wanted to go but Dolores stopped her. She had been cooking all day, she needed some rest, âLet me go get him.â
âLet me,â the new maid offered.
Dolores nodded, but didnât sit down. She stood in the dining room glancing at the front door, curious as to who might be visiting at this hour.
