âWho are the witnesses?â asked Boyce.
Johnâs face paled in fear. He gulped, âIâll tell you everything. Donât kill me.â
Armand paused. He wasnât going to let him go, but instead, he needed to hear what John said first. Armand scoffed, âTell it. But know that Iâll put you to death in misery if I find out youâre lying.â
John said, âI wonât. I wonât. Iâll tell you all about it, but will you be able to let me go if I tell?â
âIâll let you walk out of here,â Armand said.
John breathed a sigh of relief. There would be hope as long as he got out of this place. These people were crazy. John was very afraid of dying here.
He told Armand everything without thinking too much: âAt first I wanted to rape her. She was beautiful and seduced me. At first she was nice to me, so I thought she would want to sleep with me. But she attacked me with the candlestick after I untied her ropes. See, these wounds came from her. I didnât rape her. I didnât rape her. I really didnât. Iâve told you everything. Can you let me go now?â
Armand was amused, âYou wanted to rape Theresa and you wanted me to let you go? Are you dreaming?â
Armand was willing to hear his worst assumption come true. He thought that even if Theresa was raped, he wouldnât walk away from her. Armand wanted to take care of Theresa with his best effort. Now that Armand had heard the truth from John, he was very happy that Theresa had not been raped.
After all, it would traumatize Theresa if she were raped. The weak-minded wouldnât even have the courage to stay alive.
John opened his eyes and raised his voice, âHow can you break your promise? You said you would let me out of here. I told you the truth.â
Armand squatted down and pinched Johnâs jaw. He sneered, âIs Declan blind to make you his assistant? Youâre a fool. I said Iâd let you walk out of here, but did I say youâre going to walk out? You can walk out of here lying down too.â
John was terrified. He knelt down in front of Armand: âPlease forgive me. I have learned my mistakes. I wonât do it again.â
John was a bully and a pushover. He would have been put in an important position if he were capable. He became Declanâs assistant because Declanâs previous assistant was arrested, so Declan promoted him. John wasnât capable at all. He was promoted because he was always at Declanâs side and so Declan remembered him.
However, John was a disappointment. He made a big mistake before he could enjoy his glory days.
Armand rolled up his sleeves and said cruelly, âWhich hand did you touch her with?â.
John quickly hid his right hand. Then he kept his arms crossed as he realized his movements were too obvious. John cried out loudly, âIâm sorry. Let me go, please. Iâll do anything for you.â
âWas it the right hand?â Armand grabbed Johnâs hair and pulled him back, âAre you going to give it up or should I do it for you?â
Snot covered Johnâs face as he cried. At this moment, John didnât look like a man at all. He was weak, feeble and cowardly.
âYou bastard,â Armand scolded John with a tone of disgust. He pulled Johnâs hair and repeatedly pushed his head against the wall. John was in pain. He was screaming like a wounded horse. Boyce couldnât take the screaming and handed Armand a roll of duct tape.
âI thought the interrogation room was soundproofed.â Armand didnât understand why Boyce was doing that.
Boyce didnât even want to take a look at John. John didnât deserve to be a man.
âItâs painful to listen to.â
Armand understood Boyceâs point and removed the duct tape. John quickly ran to another corner, âPlease. Please let me go.â
âHold him,â Armand instructed Boyce.
John quickly ran away when he saw Boyce coming toward him. He would have died if he had not run. However, John was only able to run a few steps before Boyce caught him. Boyce twisted Johnâs arms and let Armand seal his lips.
Armand sealed the tape around Johnâs head. Then, Armand threw the tape away and told Boyce, âGive me his right hand.â
Boyce threw Johnâs right hand to the ground. Armand slapped Johnâs face and said, âI donât deserve to be a man if I donât cripple you.â
John could not utter a sound. His face was pale with fear, but he could not break free. All John could do was watch as Armand stepped on his hand.
The sound of bone crunching came from under Armandâs feet. Johnâs face twisted in pain.
Armand twisted his leg. He was wearing a pair of leather shoes. Johnâs toes disfigured under Armandâs feet. Then Boyce let go of John and stepped back.
John was shaking and his pants were wet. He had urinated since I donât know when.
Armand stepped on Johnâs face, âGee, thatâs the first time Iâve ever seen a man piss himself! Youâre a disgrace.â
Boyce said to Armand, âDonât kill him yet. Weâre going to need him for later.â
John was Declanâs assistant, and he must have known Declanâs plans. First they were going to beat him up and then interrogate him.
Armand didnât respond to Boyce. He wanted very much to kill John.
Boyce patted Armandâs shoulder, âEven if you wanted him dead, you donât need to do it yourself. Itâs not worth it for scum like him.â Armand nodded reluctantly.
Boyce turned to Matthew, âWe should wait outside.â
Matthew nodded and left the room first. Then, he headed for a room next to the one Dolores was in.
Dolores sat in the chair and watched everything Armand did. She could feel Armandâs anger. The anger portrayed the feelings Armand had for Theresa. It was deep.
But, as an outsider, she was in no position to comment.
Dolores also felt relief that Theresa was not raped.
âDo you want to go home now?â Matthew approached. Dolores turned around and looked at Matthew. He shook his head, âIâll stay a while longer.â
Boyce asked, âDid you want to watch Armand beat up John?â
Dolores answered Boyce with another question, âDid you get a promotion?â
It was a surprising question. Boyce stared at Dolores for a while and replied, âYes.â
âCongratulations. Iâll arrange a celebratory dinner for you. Bring Armand with you to the villa,â Dolores said.
âThatâs not necessaryâ¦â
âIt is. You have been promoted and that means you are capable. We are happy for you. I didnât mention it because we havenât caught John yet. Now that we have him, consider one of our concerns resolved. We may not have solved our problems with Declan yet, but we can make time for a celebratory dinner.â
âIf thatâs what you said. Thank you, Dolores,â Boyce thanked.
âYouâre welcome. You can go to the villa early if youâre free,â Dolores smiled. A message was hidden in her words, but Boyce didnât catch it. He replied, âSure.â
âThen Iâll go home early,â Dolores rose from her chair. Matthew asked her to wait a bit, âI have something to tell Boyce. Wait for me outside.â
Dolores nodded, âSure.â Then, she headed outside.
When Dolores left, Matthew and Boyce planned what they were going to do next. The reason they were keeping John alive was that they wanted John to tell them how Declan had broken the law. They wouldnât kill John themselves, even if they wanted him dead. They would just use someone else to get rid of him.
As long as they had proof that Declan broke the law, they were going to tell people that John sold Declan out regardless of whether he did it or not. Declan was going to kill the traitor himself right then and there without needing Boyce and Matthew to do anything.
Boyce said, âYou understand. You can trust me.â
Matthew looked at the monitor on the desk. John curled up and Armand was still beating him. Armand didnât look like he was going to stop anytime soon. He was still furious. Matthew then turned his back and walked out of the room.
Dolores told Matthew that she wanted to go home, but Matthew asked her to go to the office with him.
âEat with me later. Iâll send you back home,â Matthew buckled Dolores in.
Matthew then started the engine and asked Dolores, âWere you going to pair Armand and Theresa?â
