The voice sounded a little familiar to Dolores, and she soon recognized the person. She stiffened a little.
She wondered if she should turn away or pretend she hadnât heard her.
Even if they knew each other, she didnât know what to talk about.
galnovelsâ¢com where stories grow At that moment, the person repeated her name and continued to look her up and down.
Dolores could no longer pretend she hadnât heard her, so she looked back.
Sure enough, Marina was standing in the distance. They were not entirely far apart, but Marina had changed a lot. She looked much older. She used to take good care of herself, but now she gave the impression of being even older than her real age, as she had a lot of gray hair.
Marina forced a smile. âI thought I had called the wrong person.â
As she spoke, she glanced at Doloresâ belly. It was now slightly bulging. She asked, âYouâre almost five months along, arenât you?â
Dolores emitted a âhmm.â
âAlmost.â
âAre you shopping here?â asked Marina.
Dolores said yes.
âAre you in a hurry? If not, thereâs a coffee shop on the sixth floor. Can we talk?â proposed Marina.
Dolores pressed her lips together without speaking. She wondered what she could talk to Marina about.
âI donât want to say anything, I just want to talk to you. Iâm home alone, always bored,â Marina said with a smile.
Since she said so, Dolores would be quite ruthless if she kept refusing.
Even if she didnât want to mention her relationship with the Harris Family, Marina had done nothing wrong. They used to talk to each other as a family and eat meals together.
âPlease wait for me,â Dolores said to the driver.
The latter nodded. âItâs all right, Mrs. Nelson.â
âThereâs an elevator.â Marina pointed to the elevator and said.
Dolores walked over. They waited for the elevator to come down and went up to the sixth floor. Marina chose an inside corner by the window. The café was quiet and there were hardly any customers.
A waiter approached. Marina ordered a cup of coffee and took a look at Dolores. He asked her, âWhat would you like to order?â.
âA glass of fruit juice, please.â
Marina passed the menu to the waiter and said, âA cup of coffee and a glass of fruit juice. Thank you.â
âVery well.â The waiter took the menu and asked, âWhat kind of coffee would you like, maâam?â.
âAny would be fine,â Marina said.
âOkay, maâam.â He left.
Dolores and Marina looked at each other in silence for a while. Dolores didnât know how to start the conversation. Should she ask Marina how she had been doing lately?
Obviously, she wasnât doing very well.
However, Dolores couldnât find any appropriate words for the moment.
Finally, Marina started a topic. âThe older the baby gets, the more exhausted youâll feel, do you feel tired now?â
Dolores said quietly, âIâm fine, just sleepier than before. I heard the others were pretty sleepy at first, but I got sleepy very late.â
Marina smiled. After all, she had given birth before, so they had some issues in common. âWhen I was carrying Noah, I also got sleepy very late. You didnât put on any weight. I put on a lot of weight back then. Before I gave birth, I had already reached seventy pounds.â
Dolores smiled, âItâs probably because of my build. I could hardly gain any weight.â
When Marina still wanted to say something, the waiter came over. He poured Marina the coffee and Dolores the juice. âPlease let me know if you need anything else.â
Dolores uttered an âhmmâ faintly. When he left, she picked up the juice and took a few sips.
Marina picked up her coffee, but didnât drink. She was thinking about how to tell Dolores about Jeffery.
No matter what she said, however, the atmosphere would become quite embarrassing.
In the end, she gave up.
âAre you still in touch with Noah?â Marina put down her coffee and asked.
Dolores answered truthfully, âNo.â
After she left town, she didnât contact anyone, because she didnât want to know what had happened next. Now she was back, but she never talked about such things with Matthew.
He tried to avoid everything and everyone in the Harris Family.
âHe joined the army.â Marina lowered her head, twirling her coffee cup.
âHave you heard about your motherâs older brother?â When she asked, she didnât give Dolores a glance.
Hearing her, Dolores clasped her hands under the table, but didnât answer.
Marina knew that she knew. With a smile, she said in a wry tone, âIt was on the news. Everyone should have known.â
After a pause, she continued, âI hated you back then. Whatever happens, you should persuade Matthew. For your sake, he wouldnât have done so much.â
Dolores did not agree with her at all. However, she didnât say so. It didnât matter that Marina hated her or complained about her, Dolores didnât care at all.
She didnât want to be trapped by things that had happened in the past. All she wanted was to lead a good life now.
She would never have conflict with Matthew over such things.
âBut soon, I understood. It was really her uncleâs fault. Whether he knew it or not, he shouldnât have done it. He had killed Victoria Forbis. After all, it was because he cared too much about Jolene.â Marina glanced at Dolores. âYour uncle went to turn himself in. Please donât feel pressured to confront Matthew. You donât owe him anything. Your uncle did it because he cares about your relationship with Matthew. In fact, he longs to see you.â
Finally, Marina began to sob. They used to have a happy family, but now she was the only one at home. Because of the Jeffery affair, there were a lot of rumors, so she rarely went out.
This was the first time she had been out shopping after Jeffery was incarcerated. Her cousinâs son was getting married, so she was shopping for a wedding gift.
Doloresâ heart was fluctuating. As much as she wanted to avoid it, even if she had deliberately ignored something, it still existed.
Her relationship with the Harris Family was just one example.
She didnât want to admit it, but it existed.
Marina wiped her eyes. âIâve been too talkative. By the way, Noah is doing very well in the army.â
That was the only thing that could cheer her up.
âI didnât mean to ask you for anything by talking to you. I was just wondering if you could see your uncle when he gets out,â Marina said in a pleading tone.
It was Jefferyâs wish.
As his wife, that was all she could do for her husband.
Dolores glanced at Marina and her mind was tangled. She had a lot of complicated feelings in her heart that she couldnât calm down at all.
She couldnât refuse Marina, but she didnât want to have any relationship with the Harris Family.
After all, Jeffery had directly caused Victoriaâs death.
âIs this request too difficult for you?â Marina couldnât understand. What was wrong with her meeting with Jeffery?
Suddenly, she found Dolores to be cold.
âDo you only care about your husband instead of other family members?â Marina wanted to suppress her emotion, but she couldnât help but question Dolores.
Dolores stared at her for a few seconds. She wasnât afraid Marina would misunderstand her, but she wanted Marina to know why she wanted to cut ties with the Harris Family.
She explained, âWhen the car accident happened, she wasnât going to die, but she protected me. I was safe and sound because she traded her own life for mine-how am I going to stand up to your husband?â
Her children had lost their grandmother and Matthew had lost his mother to Jeffery. In all of Matthewâs life, he could never call Victoria âmomâ.
It was the regret of his whole life.
Nothing could make up for it.
Marina was startled. She had never expected it to be like this.
âWellâ¦â
âPlease leave it. I donât want to bring up the past. I just want to lead a quiet life with him.â After finishing her words, Dolores stood up. âI have to go now.â
Marina also followed her to get up. âWait a momentâ¦â
