Amanda, who was snuggled in his arms, stirred and asked, âDaddy, when do we get to see Mommy?â
Matthew looked at his daughter and stroked her back, âSleep for a while. Youâll see her when you wake up.â
If they got going now, they should be able to make it to C-Town before dark.
The car sped past the two figures by the river.
When Matthew looked out the window, he had already passed the side of the road and hadnât seen Dolores.
And Dolores, standing by the river, was completely oblivious to the passage of her son, daughter and Matthew behind her.
She was only surprised that Charles had married only for the sake of his career.
She could not agree to such a course of action.
âThe woman you are marrying is someone who will be with you for the rest of your life.
How can you only want someoneâs family to be good?â
âThen what should I look for?â Charles tilted his head to look at her.
âAt least that you have good feelings for her. Otherwise, if the girl who marries you knows youâre only doing it for your career, she might hate you in the future.â
Marriage was a second birth for a woman. She did not have the opportunity to choose what kind of family she was born into and what parents she had for her first half of life.
But she did get to choose a husband, to decide what kind of person to spend the rest of her life with.
Charles was clearly taking advantage of someone else.
âIâd like to, but how can I control my heart too?â he smiled and asked, âDo you have a good way, can you teach me?â
Dolores avoided his gaze, âI donât know what youâre talking about.â
Actually, Charles meant it was the same as anyone else if it wasnât Dolores.
âYou look very beautiful today.â His gaze fell on Doloresâ dress, a pink V-neck dress with a knee-length silk skirt that wrapped around her slender body and slender legs. The beaded flowers made of tiny pearls embroidered on the skirt and the slight bulge in her belly made the elegant, graceful dress look even more precious.
Perhaps it was a woman who had become a mother that could give off this kind of warm and soft feeling on her body.
Dolores smiled kindly and did not respond.
She felt that anything she said might be answered by Charles with something she could not answer.
So she did not open her mouth.
Then neither of them spoke again, remaining silent. As the sun rose higher and higher, the cool shadows by the river also changed position.
Dolores said, âToday is your big day. You must have a lot of things to do. Better get back soon.â
Charles responded with a âhmm.â Then he called Tom and they left the river bank.
On the other side, Matthew, who was already on the road, received a message from Theresa. There was no text, just pictures.
With Doloresâ permission, Theresa had looked through the contents of the file bag. She didnât feel good at all after reading it, and she understood why Dolores seemed so terrible.
She didnât know what conspiracy was in it, and she wasnât thinking as hard as Dolores was. She just wanted to tell Matthew that such a thing had happened and ask him if it was true or not.
Because I was afraid that Dolores would be hurt.
She had experienced betrayal and knew what it felt like.
Matthew was as shocked as she was. He had never even met the woman in the picture, but how could there be so many pictures like that.
Where had Theresa gotten them?
She quickly called the number back, and soon the other end answered.
Theresaâs anxious voice came through, âWhatâs going on, is it real?â
âWhere did you get these pictures?â Matthewâs voice was icy as he asked who had taken these photos. If Theresa knew everything, did Dolores also see the pictures?
Was there some misunderstanding?
âDidnât I tell you last time someone sent something without a signature or address, and after Lola read them, she asked me to give them to you, but you said to have them here with me first?â
âSheâs seen them, hasnât she?â Matthew felt uneasy, fearing that Dolores would take him seriously and misunderstand him. He worried that she would be angry and furious. After all, she was pregnant now.
To be fair, heâd freak out too if Dolores had such a picture in front of her.
âOf course, she had seen them. She looked terrible after seeing them. So thatâs why Iâm curious, are they real?â
âOf course not. Please keep an eye on her for me. Iâll be back soon.â As Matthew was about to hang up, Theresaâs voice rang again, âSheâs not here. Sheâs gone to White City.â
âWhat did you say?â
âSheâs gone to White City. Charles is getting married and sheâs been invited to the wedding.â
âI see.â He hung up the phone and said to Armand, who was driving, âTurn around up ahead. Weâre going back to White City.â
Armand was puzzled and asked, âWhy, who did you call just now, did something happen?â
Matthew spoke sternly, âI told you to turn around, why all the talk?â
He was uneasy about her coming to White City at that time. Who knew what Charles had up his sleeve?
âWould he take advantage of Dolores when she was in a state of confusion?â
âMarriage?â
âWho is she marrying, so soon, is it a deliberate ploy to deceive Dolores?â He was so irritated because he knew Charlesâ thoughts about Dolores.
Armand looked back. Only then did he notice Matthewâs frighteningly pale face. Not daring to say a word, he immediately exited the highway at the front exit, took the road below and got into the oncoming lane.
Matthew closed his eyes, feeling that he was too impulsive. Now that he calmed down and thought about it, how had those pictures appeared in front of Dolores?
It was obvious that they had come for him and that they knew about his relationship with Dolores.
He relaxed and dialed Boyceâs number.
Soon the call was answered. Boyceâs voice rang first before he spoke, âI was just about to call you.â
âWhatâs wrong?â Boyce wouldnât want to call Matthew if nothing was wrong.
âYou asked me to keep an eye on Declan, but I couldnât find him. He doesnât seem to be in B-town.â Boyce felt strange.
Matthew realized instantly that all those pictures had been taken by Declan.
âHeâs not in City B, maybe in City C?â
He asked, âAre you busy lately?â
Boyceâs boss valued him and wanted to give him a promotion. So he had given him more jobs lately.
But, still, he told Matthew he wasnât busy.
When Matthew asked him, it must have meant there was something he needed his help with.
âGo to City C. If Iâm right, he should be there. Look what heâs done.â
Boyce was startled, âHas he been looking for trouble with Dolores?â
âCheck it out first. Iâll tell you the details when I get back.â
Boyce was thinking of asking whether Matthew was in C-Town or not.
But instead, he merely said, âIâve got him. Iâm going there today.â
If Matthew was in City C, he wouldnât have asked him to come back to make a trip to City C.
Armand drove in silence, not daring to speak.
After an hour, they returned to White City.
They would probably have a wedding at the largest hotel in White City. So Matthew told Armand to go to the hotel.
It was still some distance from the hotel and they could already tell that there was some happy event going on there. There were flowers strewn all over the ground, rows and rows of cars parked along the roadside and lots of people watching on the street.
Matthew frowned, âIs Charles really getting married?â.
The car pulled up in front of the hotel as the two sleeping children awoke and asked, âAre we home yet?â
Matthew patted them, âNot yet. Go back to Armand first. I have something to take care of.â
He didnât know what was going on inside, so he let Armand take the two boys back to the Forbis Family first while he went inside.
Although Amanda was a little reluctant, she nodded her head.
Matthew pushed open the car door and got out. He watched as Armand drove the car and took the two children away before entering the hotel.
