Maybe it was fate and mortals could never influence it.

“Andrew and Amanda must be close to school age. Find her and spend your days with them.” The younger generation should not suffer for the sins of the older.

Ever since Jayden had learned that Dolores was gone, he worried constantly that Matthew would do something he would regret for the rest of his life. He had already experienced what it felt like to have lifelong regrets, and he didn’t want his son to suffer the same.

“I don’t know if she was mad at me. I had been dead for so long and she wouldn’t even visit me in my dreams.” She began to choke up as she spoke and couldn’t suppress her emotions.

Matthew didn’t respond and just stood still and listened.

The occasional breeze blew and the rustle of leaves could be heard from afar.

Time marched on and soon the sun set behind the hills that cast a long shadow over the valley. Day turned to night.

The father and son remained in the room all afternoon and no one came into the room to interrupt them. It was dinner time when Matthew left the room.

Mr. Forbis prepared dinner and the dishes were spread out on the round table in the courtyard. Amanda ran over as soon as she saw Matthew and greeted, “Dad!” Matthew gently stroked her head.

“Let’s eat.” Amanda pulled him toward the dining room table.

Buzz…

At that moment, his phone vibrated in his pocket. He made Amanda sit down to dinner before answering the call. The caller was Boyce, who said, “Jeffery’s trial is out.”

The accident was serious and resulted in three deaths and one injury. Authorities did a detailed investigation and discovered that it was related to a kidnapping incident that caused the accident. Jeffery turned himself in to police and pleaded guilty to the crime. He also showed sincere remorse for his crime, so the courts were lenient with him.

“He was sentenced to two years,” Boyce said.

During sentencing, the judge said, “Jeffery, you violated the law as an official and caused serious damage to the reputation of officials in the eyes of the public. Therefore, you should be severely punished. He surrendered to the police, pleaded guilty, repented and made a sincere public apology. He was sentenced to two years suspended and banned from holding public office for life.”

Matthew was unaffected and felt no need for revenge. He simply replied, “Okay.”

“The others have been similarly sentenced, except that …. Declan has not received the same sentence.”

Jeffery was looking for Declan but Jeffery was the mastermind. Declan didn’t look for someone to hijack the car. It was his man who did it.

At first, he wanted to frame Declan and took a picture of the man and the guy. He even tried to instigate the man to say that it was Declan who ordered him to do it. However, after that man was caught, he maintained his story that he was the one who searched for the people and that he had nothing to do with Declan. In addition, Old Mr. Bailey managed to find some connections that allowed him to avoid being charged. Someone who can operate a nightclub in that area must have very strong connections.

“After this incident, he must realize that we used him and lied to him. Would he seek revenge?” asked Boyce, as Declan was not an honorable man and would hold a grudge against them.

“Keep an eye on him. We’ll discuss this when he gets back.”

“Agreed.”

After ending the call, Matthew turned to look at the children. Both children were eating dinner in the moonlight. He agreed with what Jayden said. Even if he had taken his revenge on Victoria, he had never thought of abandoning Dolores and the family.

Matthew approached the table and Mr. Forbis said, “Come, it is late, join us for dinner.”

Matthew looked at Mr. Forbis, sat down and said, “Thank you.”

“Oh, don’t stand on ceremony. I’m not a stranger. You don’t have to be so formal.” Mr. Forbis said as he handed Matthew the chopsticks.

“Let me know what you need.” Matthew said as he took the chopsticks and continued, “He will need your care when he is here.” Jayden had told Matthew that he wanted to stay there but he wasn’t medically ill. He just needed some time to heal mentally.

Mr. Forbis was quick to reply, “Of course. I never treated him as a stranger.

Regardless of his feelings for my sister, they had been married for over twenty years.

So I always treated him as part of the family.” He said with a heavy heart.

Mr. Forbis poured Matthew some wine and said, “Come to think of it, I have to thank you.” He also filled his glass with wine. Even though they were in a remote area of White City, he was still aware of outside affairs.

“As you can see, this mansion was an inheritance from the ancestors and they made their fortune from weaving. The watered gauze was invented by my grandfather and he then passed the technique on to my father. At that time, it was in high demand and everyone in my father’s time had a high standard of living. In the garment industry, watered gauze was highly prized and extremely important.” Mr. Forbis became excited and continued, “It was thought that it was going to decline and disappear from the market, but now, unexpectedly, it had regained its former glory.”

Due to the success of the Dolores show, watered gauze had been marketed as a highly customized material and immediately caught the attention of the industry. He was familiar with this development as he followed the industry closely.

“I’m thinking you must have something to do with this. Without your support, who could care so much about the Forbis Family business?”

Mr. Forbis wiped his face, raised his glass and said, “Thank you.”

Matthew pursed his lips and understood his message, but he had nothing to do with it all. At the show, he thought Dolores had done this to atone for what she did to Victoria but now he finally understood the significance of her making the watered gauze back in the marketplace. She did it not only for Victoria’s death, but also to inherit the skill. Perhaps it was all predestined. She had now inherited the technique of making watered gauze so that she could carry on the Forbis Family legacy.

Now, I really wanted to thank Dolores. He wanted to thank her for all she had done for him and the Forbis Family.

Matthew drank the wine and Mr. Forbis continued to recount the past.

Armand did not drink any alcohol as he had to drive them back to C-Town first thing the next morning.

In City C.

Dolores came out of the store and stood by the roadside waiting for a cab. She had left the car for Theresa to use.

At a parked black car not far from her, a man inside said as he sized her up, “Are you sure it’s her?”

“Rest assured, Mr. Bailey, I have investigated thoroughly. Matthew came to this town for her.” said John.

“But how come she seems unflappable?” He intentionally sent those photographs to Dolores to see her reaction, but she was extremely calm, as if she wasn’t involved. Normally, a woman would raise quite a storm if she realized her man was having an affair.

“I’m sure. Matthew even called off his wedding to Miss Herbert because of this woman. His estranged relationship with his father seemed to be due to this woman as well.”

“Oh, yeah?” Declan seemed intrigued .
