âDo you want me to send this package to the office or are you coming to pick it up?â asked Theresa. Even Theresa didnât know why she wanted Armand to come and take the two children. Nor did she know that he had gone to White City.
âWhatâs wrong?â Matthew looked out the window. Based on the location Mr. Forbis sent, it didnât look like there was any hospital in that area.
âItâs a package for Dolores, but thereâs no sender information. Dolores saw it and asked me to give it to you. I donât know what the package contains.â He quickly added, âSince you asked Armand to take the children, she has become somewhat cautious.â
Matthew knew she would become apprehensive as soon as Armand went to her house. Boyce had told him that Jefferyâs case would be determined in the next few days. So he expected Jefferyâs case would be determined once he returned from White City.
âHave it with you. Iâll ask you for it when I get back.â He came to White City to visit Jayden and would return later. He wasnât in White City and there was no point in sending the package to his office.
âAll right then. Contact me when youâre back.â
âIs there a hospital around here?â Armand was driving the car, looked back and said, âThis place looks familiar.â
Theresa heard Armandâs voice, said goodbye and ended the call.
Matthew put his phone away and realized that this place looked like the place where Dolores learned from Mr. Forbis how to create the watered gauze.
âHead to the address.â He began to worry that Jayden wasnât at the hospital.
They drove down a dirt road for a while before coming to a sprawling courtyard with a large mansion.
âWhat is this place?â Armand asked curiously.
âItâs Grandmaâs house,â Andrew said. He knew, since Dolores had once brought him and his sister there.
Armand looked at him and then toward Matthew. It was obvious that Andrew was referring to Victoria. So this was the Forbisâ residence?
Matthew stifled his reactions and didnât seem surprised by it. The car stopped and opened the door. The children were delighted to be back in this place and jumped out of the car.
âIs Grandpa here?â asked Amanda.
âMost likely.â If Jayden was in White City, then he was most likely at the Forbis residence.
At that moment, Mr. Forbis came out of the mansion and immediately picked up his pace when he saw the two children and said, âWow, you two are here too!â
âWeâve come to see Grandpa!â The two children said in unison.
âGreat, great!â Said Mr. Forbis happily. Mr. Forbis was very happy now that the facts had been revealed and Matthew had personally brought the children to the Forbis residence. Mr. Forbis looked at Matthew and noticed that Matthew did not seem to share his feelings and maintained an indifferent expression. He was quite disappointed, but continued to smile as he looked at the children and commented, âLetâs all go to the house.â
Armand was impressed as he entered the courtyard of the mansion. He could see from the architecture of the house that the Forbis Family had a high social status in the past. In addition, the house was very well maintained considering its age.
âWow, my goose swing is still here.â Amanda let go of her fatherâs hand and ran to the swing under the tree.
Matthew looked at Amanda and wondered that Dolores must have made the excuse to come and stay here. Thatâs why she managed to learn all the secrets.
âYour father is in that room. Heâs waiting for you inside. He wanted to see you and was worried that you wouldnât come. So he asked me to inform you that he was sick and that he was hospitalized.â explained Mr. Forbis.
Matthew had guessed the same thing because he didnât notice any hospital on the way. He said to Armand, âArmand, please take care of them.â
âBe calm. Iâm here.â Mr. Forbis said quickly. He had the responsibility to take care of the guests. However, Matthew trusted Armand more to take care of the children.
Armand nodded and replied, âGo ahead.â
Mr. Forbis was disappointed and sighed. Armand quickly added, âThatâs him, donât take it to heart.â
âHave a seat.â Mr. Forbis pointed to the chair under the tree. Mr. Forbis poured Armand a glass of water and said, âYou must be tired after the trip.â
Armand smiled and nodded.
Matthew entered the room. The room was decorated with a feminine touch. Jayden sat by the window in a rocking chair and looked out. She had a blanket over her legs and her hair was snow white. The wrinkles on her face revealed her struggles through the years.
âYouâre here.â Jayden didnât turn around. Matthew didnât answer, but kept walking toward him. Jayden must have had something to tell Matthew to ask him to come closer. He was willing to listen to what he had to say.
Matthew stopped at the window and looked out into the nearby forest. The forest was lush and green this time of year.
âYou should know where this place is.â Jayden followed with his eyes closed as he exhaled a long sigh and said, âI have many regrets in this life. I hope you donât follow in my footsteps and regret it after you lose her.â He had reflected on what he had done and although he didnât hurt anyone, a lot happened because he wasnât decisive enough.
He already knew that Jolene loved someone else and if he had refused that marriage, many things would not have happened.
âHe married me for you. Even though it seemed like we were a loving couple throughout these twenty plus years, I never knew if he loved me.â
She was in love with Nathan and they were each otherâs first love. Nathan never married and their love for each other never ended neatly. Because she knew Jolene still had feelings for Nathan, there was a wedge in their marriage over the years. Thus, even when she realized she had feelings for Victoria, she never expressed her feelings to him. He only began to regret it after she left.
Jayden hoped his son wouldnât do anything he would regret because of the burdens of the previous generation. âI think, based on her love for you, she would want you to be happy. She would not harm someone she loves out of revenge. You are an adult and should clearly know how you feel.
I once thought of stopping you and forcing you to marry Miss Herbert. That would stop the truth from coming outâ¦but who would have thought that no matter how hard I tried, the truth could not be suppressed. Maybe itâs fate.â
