Eddie suddenly stood up and said curtly, “I’m talking to Jeffery. Who let you in?”

Mrs. Chambers looked at her husband. “I’ve been married to you for many years. I’ve worked hard and taken care of you. Have I ever refused you any requests?”

Eddie could not utter a word. His wife was very virtuous, taking care of this family and their daughter, serving him.

“I’m talking to Jeffery. why did you come in? You’re a woman, what the hell do you know? Put down the tea and come out.” Eddie didn’t keep talking out loud and calmed down a bit. Since Jeffery was there, if he reacted too excitedly, it would look like he was trying to hide something.

However, his eyes were full of warning as he looked at his wife.

Mrs. Chambers glared at him, feeling rather annoyed. “After marrying you, you have become the center of my life. However, this time I will not listen to you.”

Chloe was standing off to the side. Her gaze swept between her parents. “Mom, what are you doing?”

Mrs. Chambers looked at her daughter with reddened eyes. “I want you to know what your father thinks.”

Eddie panicked. “You, go away!”

If it were in the past, in front of her furious husband, Mrs. Chambers would definitely leave. However, she couldn’t let her husband sink into his obsession and even pay the price for her daughter’s future.

She went inside, put down the tea plate, went to the bookshelf and pulled out a book, called The Strategies.

With a livid face, Eddie looked at her. Jeffery and Chloe were quite curious, wondering what she would get out of it. They stared at her without blinking.

Under all the stares, Mrs. Chambers found a picture of the book.

Chloe had never seen a picture like that, and she didn’t know who the girl in the picture was either. However, Jeffery could recognize that it was a picture of his younger sister.

He reached over and took the photo from Mrs. Chambers’ hands. It was taken when Jolene was fifteen years old. She was wearing a white dress, her hair was down, and she was standing under a large tree in the yard. Her features were still childlike, but she looked faintly delicate and pretty. In particular, her eyes, clear and bright as stars, made it impossible for others to miss a glance.

Under the light, Jeffery discovered that there were words behind the picture. He turned it over and saw that Jolene’s name and the time were there.

The time was the year Jeffery enlisted in the Army.

He looked back at Eddie. “What is this?”

Eddie turned away, not looking at anyone in the scene.

Mrs. Chambers wanted to smile, but failed. Her whole body was rigid. “I’ve always known he has a lady love, but I’ve never wanted to find out. But now, I can’t ignore it. He’s already crazy.”

At first, she didn’t know Eddie was in love with another woman. As a husband, he treated her rather coldly. After having sex with her, he would lock himself in the den.

At first, she thought it was because of Eddie’s personality, so she gradually accepted it. Shortly after Chloe was born, she discovered that he had hidden a picture of a baby girl. One time, he came to get something from the studio. By accident, he knocked over the book, from which a picture fell.

Mrs. Chambers wanted to ask Eddie why he had hidden another girl’s picture, but for her daughter’s sake and because the girl in the picture did not look mature, Mrs. Chambers thought he had thought too much.

Later, after sleeping with her, Eddie would still stay in the studio for a while. So she deliberately walked in without knocking and discovered that he was looking at the picture at the time.

Mrs. Chambers was quite upset at the time and wanted to question him. However, she was afraid and did not do so. She was afraid that her daughter might be hurt and, besides, she loved Eddie.

“You’ve expended so much effort, isn’t it because you just want Chloe to marry the son of the woman you’ve secretly loved for so many years?”

Mrs. Chambers covered her mouth. All her pent-up tolerance burst out at that moment. She had never told anyone of her bitterness. She couldn’t talk about it.

How could she tell others that her husband was in love with another woman? How could she tell others that, during sex, when her husband got excited, he called out another woman’s name?

She felt too ashamed.

Chloe was dumbfounded. “Dad, is it true what Mom said?”

Eddie’s body stiffened, trembling slightly.

“Dad, say something!” Chloe couldn’t accept this affair. Her father urged her to marry Matthew in the name that for the sake of the family.

However, it was only for his selfish purpose.

Jeffery stood with his hands behind his back. Looking at Eddie, he asked, “I want to know what’s going on here, too.”

“Do you still remember I went to your house when we joined the Army that year?” Eddie didn’t look back. His voice was suppressed.

“Of course.” Jeffery wouldn’t forget that day.

“I was waiting for you in the living room…”

That day was quite beautiful. The sun was shining in early summer, but it wasn’t hot at all. It was just hot.

Wearing a long-sleeved T-shirt, Eddie was standing in the living room. Suddenly, someone clutched his back, covered his eyes, and asked in an extremely soft and sweet voice, “Guess who I am!”

The girl spoke into his ear. As she spoke, she exhaled on the skin behind his ear. He felt numb and tingly. He could even smell the faint scent of the girl.

Evidently, the person who was so intimate with him was a girl. His heart was pounding.

Jeffery came downstairs after changing his clothes. Seeing that his sister was covering Eddie’s eyes, he asked in confusion, “Jolene, what are you doing?”

Seeing Jeffery on the stairs, Jolene stiffened. Hurriedly, she let go of the man.

She had thought it was Jeffery. Since Jeffery was joining the Army that day, she deliberately asked for leave from school to say goodbye to him.

She wanted to joke with him, but unexpectedly, she did it with the wrong guy.

Scratching her hair, she told him, “I thought you were my brother. I’m sorry.” Jolene felt very embarrassed and blushed slightly.

It was the first time Eddie had met her. She wore a ponytail. Her face was white and delicate.

Jeffery approached. “This is Eddie Chambers. He’s enlisting with me in the army.

I’m better looking than he is. How can you go wrong?”

Jolene rolled her eyes. “Narcissist!”

She only saw Eddie’s back at that moment. They were the same height and there was no stranger in the house.

“We’re going to go have a barbecue. Will you join us?” After enlisting in the army, there would be no such possibility in the future, so Jeffery and Eddie wanted to go out that day.

“Sure. Why not, I asked for a furlough to come back,” Jolene said.

“All right. Let’s go.” Jeffery took the key from his father’s call.

Sitting in the car, Eddie glanced at Jolene in the back seat from the rearview mirror. “Jeffery, what’s the matter, afraid I’m going to snatch your little sister away from you, why didn’t you introduce me to her?”

Jeffery shot her a look. “Didn’t you two know each other recently? She’s my younger sister, Jolene.”

Jolene smiled. “You’ll be with my brother from now on. Please take care of him.”

“I need someone to take care of me?” Jeffery couldn’t agree with his sister. She seemed to look down on him.

“You’re too self-righteous. What if you’re wrong? I wouldn’t be by your side.

Who else could appeal to Daddy’s mercy for you?”

Terrell loved Jolene dearly. Every time Jeffery made a mistake, Jolene would ask Terrell for a favor.

Jeffery was speechless.

Eddie laughed. Looking at Jolene, he said, “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of him for you.”
