Ashleyâs sports car pulled up outside the Carter residence about five minutes after Freya spoke to Charlie on the phone.
Freya tuned and said to Ashley, âAre you okay with going back on your own?â
âIf I said I wasnât, are you going to invite me in?â
Freya undid the seat belt. âI would rather you didnât come in. Also, I will be very vigilant when I go for the matchmaking session tomorrow. I will try to squeeze as much information as I can out of him.â
Ashley nodded with a straight face. âGood. In that case, I will go home and make a list of questions.â
âYou are undoubtedly not shy about it!â
âWhy should I be shy with you?â
Freya smiled as she got out of the car. She waved to Ashley. âGo on then. Be careful on the road.â
âThe car turned and quickly drove off.
Freya veered her eyes away and turned to enter the Carter residence.
After taking a step forward, she saw a man leaning against the door.
Gideon was holding a cigarette with one hand to his mouth as he exhaled. His other hand was in his pants pocket. He was tall and gave off a mature aura as he stood there.
Freya went into a daze. For some reason, his silhouette suddenly overlapped with the little boy in her mind.
Freya had gone to the bathroom and was late while on a kindergarten excursion. She burst out crying looking at the locked gates and empty compound.
Even after crying until she almost lost her voice, it remained futile.
Fear and loneliness quickly overwhelmed her heart until a boy said from behind, âAre you done? You are so noisy!â
She instantly stopped crying. When she turned and saw the boy, she inexplicably stopped feeling scared. Someone was finally here.
âWhat are you standing around for?â
Freya suddenly snapped out of her thoughts when Gideonâs cool voice echoed in the air.
She inexplicably felt he sounded just like the little boy in her memory.
However, she did not keep thinking about it. Instead, she stepped forward. She was a little angry about Gideon kicking her out of the car on the way home.
A part of her felt he deserved it for annoying her first.
âWhen Freya got to the door, she forcibly glanced at Gideon. âLetâs go in.â
The moment she finished her sentence, she walked into the villa. However the man suddenly pulled her by the wrist and flung her against the door.
Freya could sense a dull pain coming from her back. She looked at the man inexplicably. âWhat are you doing?â
âWell done. I called you repeatedly, but your phone was off. The moment Dad called you, you answered the phone. You must have done it on purpose, right?â
Freya was speechless. She said, âI ran out of battery before you called me.â
âWhy didnât you call me back after you charged your phone?â
She looked at the man and contemplated with a slight smile on her face. âMr. Carter, tell me. Why should I call you? You should count yourself lucky I am here at all. Get this straight. If you did not kick me out of the car halfway back home, would Dad have to call me?â
âThe man scoffed. âAre you blaming me?â
âThereâs no point blaming you.â Freya veered her eyes away from him.
âYou had better watch what you say later.â
âIs this your idea of begging someone?â
Gideon raised an eyebrow. âWhy would I need to beg you?â
âIsnât it true? The temperature is very low tonight, but you stood here waiting for me out in the cold. You are pretending to wait for me but in reality, you want to warn me before I go in. Donât worry. You have already done me a favor at the old folksâ home. From now on, I will repay the favor bit by bit.â
