As the man and woman turned to go upstairs, Ling Mo had already appeared in the corridor on the third floor.
He deliberately chose a room near the corner and glanced towards the direction of the stairwell after coming out.
âSure enough, they havenât come up yet⦠Even though I canât use the psychic probe, the footsteps suddenly stopped midway up the stairs. Such an obvious flaw, who wouldnât notice itâ¦â Ling Mo thought to himself.
His words were more or less âspokenâ as a thought, which immediately drew a response from Black Silk: âHow would an ordinary person notice such details in such a tense moment? And wasnât your attention entirely on the footprints? Besides, I think they only realized someone might be following them after they got upstairs. By the way, I wonder if they went back to checkâ¦â
âI donât know about that, but Iâve already closed the door. Even if they go back, they wonât find anything suspicious. Although it was a bit risky just now, at least we can rule out the possibility that those two are mental ability superhumans. Thatâs something.â Ling Mo replied.
Slightly puzzled, Black Silk asked, âWhy?â
âThink about it from their perspective. This is their territory. If they sensed someone, wouldnât they use a psychic probe directly?â Ling Mo countered.
âSo⦠could they just have particularly sharp senses? Or some sort of special superhuman ability?â Black Silk quickly figured it out.
âProbably⦠But theyâre being so cautious without being mental ability superhumans, that can be used to our advantage.â
As they spoke, Ling Mo had already walked quite a distance along the corridor.
The structure of this hospital was quite old-fashioned; there was only one corridor, with the elevator on one side and the stairwell on the other.
Ling Mo had come up from the elevator and then walked along the corridor towards the stairwell.
This might seem dangerous, but the wards on either side provided enough retreat routes, and by moving quickly, he could investigate both sides while getting close enough to eavesdrop on the conversation between those twoâ¦
The corridor on the third floor looked much the same as downstairs, with large patches of blood and occasional broken limbs.
As he passed through the areas with more bloodstains, Ling Mo felt as if he were walking through the gaping maw of some creatureâ¦
The strong smell of disinfectant couldnât completely mask the scent of blood. Instead, it mixed into a bizarre odor that made one feel nauseous at just a whiff.
However, Ling Moâs attention wasnât on that. When faint voices were heard again from the stairwell, he quickly slipped into a ward.
In a few seconds, the voices of the two people became clear again.
ââ¦We have to check, donât we? They said someone infiltrated, and yet they donât want us to interfere. But this is our Squadâs territory,â the woman said, sounding a bit disgruntled.
âAlright, you call the shots, but donât mess with them,â the man cautioned carefully.
âWhen have I ever messed with them? Just our bad luck to run into themâ¦â the woman continued complaining.
âLook on the bright side, we might score some points for this. If we hadnât come here, we wouldnât have bumped into them eitherâ¦â The manâs tone was rather resigned, and he seemed a bit intimidated by the woman.
As the two figures appeared at the stairwell and were about to turn and continue upstairs without stopping, a light noise suddenly echoed through the corridor.
âClangâ¦â
The noise was very soft, but it was exceptionally clear in the otherwise silent corridor.
The womanâs foot had just stepped onto the stairs when she immediately halted.
She turned her head to look in the direction of the sound, then glanced at the man beside her and whispered, âGo check it out.â
Both drew their weapons simultaneously and silently approached the room from which the sound had come.
The door was ajar and was still gently swayingâ¦
After waiting a few seconds without any movement, the woman pressed herself to the door and signaled to the man.
âWhoâs there!â
As the man kicked the door open, the woman rushed in with her gun raised.
However, all that greeted them were two empty beds in the wardâ¦
The curtains covering the beds were still swaying, but it looked more like they had been moved by the wind from the door being kicked openâ¦
âWhatâs going on hereâ¦â
The woman still held her gun up, but her brows furrowed in confusion.
She looked around and suddenly turned her gaze to the window inside the room.
Like the door, the window was also half openâ¦
âLook, thereâs less dust hereâ¦â the woman suddenly pointed to the windowsill.
She pushed the window open and glanced down, her expression instantly becoming a bit ugly.
âLetâs go, check downstairs!â
The man also took a look and asked, âWhat about upstairs?â
âLetâs catch this person first. Theyâre already injured and canât have gone far,â the woman said decisively.
As she turned her head, the woman kept muttering, âI knew they were unreliable. This has to be their fault⦠Perfectly good methods ignored, stubbornly insisting onâ¦â
âAlright, just stop talkingâ¦â
Just as they left, a figure upstairs let out a soft sigh of relief.
Separated by a ceiling, the two had no idea that the real intruder was right above themâ¦
âToo cautious. If it were me, Iâd have thought it was just the wind,â Ling Mo thought, shaking his head.
âNot only did you leave marks on the windowsill, but you also left some blood on the air conditioner below!â Black Silk couldnât help but say.
Ling Mo casually tossed a blood-soaked cloth to the floor and said, âIf they first check the neighboring ward to see if any pillowcases are missing, then notice that the bloodstains on the floor seem to have been wiped, then finally climb onto the air conditioner themselves to check the stickiness of the blood, theyâll naturally realize theyâve been fooled.â
âIs that soâ¦â Black Silk said, slightly dazed.
âHowever, this is just a temporary diversion. Theyâll be back in a few minutes. Besides, Iâve gleaned a very important piece of information from their conversation⦠Xu Shuhan is likely upstairs. Unless thereâs actually a second intruder here, in which case, I should hightail it out of here.â
âArenât you going to join in?â Black Silkâs tone suddenly turned a tad mischievous.
âWeâll see⦠In any case, I have to find Xu Shuhan first,â Ling Mo said.
âHehe, I knew it!â Black Silk immediately got excited.
Ling Mo thought to himself as he silently approached the ward door.
Just as he got close to the door, he suddenly noticed an iron chain.
He almost stepped on itâ¦
Discovering something like this in a hospital ward nearly made Ling Mo think he had infiltrated a mental hospital, but upon closer inspection, he noticed the iron chain was newâ¦
One end of the chain was wrapped around a hospital bed, while the other end was soaked in a pool of still-liquid blood.
Ling Mo squatted down to examine the blood pool and used his knife to pick up some black fragments.
âThis is⦠fabric? And judging by the stitching, it looks like it came from a pair of suit pantsâ¦â
He faintly realized the hospitalâs purpose at that moment and couldnât help but let out a wry smile.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
âWhat a coincidence⦠But this place must have been a trap for Senior Zombies. Xu Shuhan has just mutated, so how did she end up here⦠However, this increases the chances that sheâs indeed hereâ¦â
Ling Mo muttered to himself as he turned back to the door.
âThose two said theyâre upstairs, and this is already the fourth floor, which means the next level up is the fifth floor⦠Judging by their tone, the group that doesnât want them interfering must be very confident⦠Theyâre probably in these two floors⦠Considering the other two will be led away for three to five minutes, thatâs all the time I have.â
While thinking this, Ling Mo carefully turned the doorknob and quickly glanced outside.
To his surprise, the scene outside was completely differentâ¦
The floor was covered in writhing flesh, and the walls seemed to be oozing blood, continuously seeping out thick plasma.
Green mucus occasionally dripped from the ceiling, landing on the flesh with a âplop,â immediately sizzling and emitting a wisp of smoke.
The entire corridor was filled with a nauseating smell, even more pungent than the mixed odor from belowâ¦
âItâs like stepping into a stomachâ¦â Ling Mo was taken aback.
Black Silk, in a matter-of-fact tone, said, âMaybe youâre just not opening the door the right way.â
âTskâ¦â Ling Mo remarked, closing the door.
After waiting for a couple of seconds, he opened the door again.
Creak-
The corridor still presented the same eerie scene, but now there was something more.
The walls, which had been constantly oozing plasma, seemed to be closing inâ¦
âStomach cramps?â Ling Mo suggested.
âItâs more like stomach contractionsâ¦â Black Silk corrected, then proposed again, âHow about opening it one more time?â
âNo need, Iâve already confirmed what I needed to know.â Ling Mo replied calmly, stepping out of the room.
For most people, moving forward under such circumstances would be psychologically taxing.
Especially with the sensation underfoot, it felt as though one was truly inside a stomach about to be digested.
Ling Mo could even glimpse strands of hair among the writhing flesh and occasionally see a rolling skullâ¦
âIn a scene like this, Xu Shuhan must have been scared out of her witsâ¦â Ling Mo couldnât help but think.
He walked as if he were on a casual stroll, and soon reached the stairway.
âIf thereâs no movement on the fourth floor, then the real danger must be on the fifth floor⦠This staircase is like a door of life and deathâ¦â
The staircase leading up was a horrifying assembly of countless sharp teeth and flesh, while the one leading down, aside from the flesh, seemed relatively safe. If you stretched out your head enough, you could even see the more normal scene belowâ¦
