Chapter 776 The Lead on Deirdre-Where Is It?
Julia felt both shock and worry roll into one. She lurched and helped her up, demanding, âWhatâs wrong, Deirdre? Why were you hiding in the closet? And God, why are you shaking so much!?â
Deirdreâs lashes were quivering. She desperately sought her voice, and when it finally came out like a leaky whisper, she exhaled, âIâm⦠fineâ¦â
âMiss me with that bullsh*t!
You look like youâve seen a ghost!â
Deirdre sputtered out a dry laugh. It was as if she had a brush with Death itself-and for now, she lived.
âIâm fine, really. I⦠I just need a favor. Please, Julia.â
âW-What kind of favor?â
Deirdre closed her eyes. âDonât ever tell anyone my name.â
âYour name?â Something larger than confusion and questioning loomed over Julia.
âWhy?â
Unpacking the entire complexities of her life was too grueling, so Deirdre simply replied under her breath, âI know youâre a good kid at heart, Julia, but there are some things I canât tell you. What I can say is that Iâm not a bad guy and havenât committed any crime. I just canât let other people know my name or my identity, especially the man who came in.â
âYouâre talking about⦠Brendan?â
Deirdre knew she had to bet on a believable lie to save herself. âItâs⦠Itâs my boyfriend. He did something by accident and incurred Brendanâs wrath. It was a business issue.â
Julia was shocked. âHow!?â âYou know what itâs like with business. Someone set my boyfriend up and threw a wrench into his deal with Brendan. Things got so heated up it left us no choice but to run to Surstate. But Brendan⦠he came after us! If he finds out about me⦠he will find out about my boyfriend, and he⦠My boyfriend will be dead!
âI am blind, Julia. I canât live alone. If something happens to my boyfriend, I⦠I wonât be able to live anymore!â
Deirdre had never wanted to try gaining sympathy from others through her disability, but right now, she did not have a choice.
Sympathy and hesitation surfaced on Juliaâs face. As a few had noted, she was never truly a bad person at her core-and now her innate kindness, combined with her personal affection for Deirdre, compelled her to help. She could not bear to leave Deirdre alone and helpless, so she nodded.
âOkay. I wonât tell him your name even if he asks,â she promised. Then, as her mind raced back to the strange, almost obsessive attitude Brendan displayed, she lowered her voice and added a warning, âBut I wonât be able to stop him from searching for you on his own.â
âItâs okay. Youâve done a lot with just that.â Deirdre took a deep breath.
â Can I leave early today? I⦠I need to talk to my boyfriend about this.â
âAlright.â
She bade the Wards farewell. Even as she walked out of the house, her knees wobbled. A fog of some kind was shrouding her brain-she almost suspected all of this to be a dream. The word âcoincidenceâ
just did not cut it! She had just gotten employed as a piano teacher only to be revealed that, in a twist of fate, the professor was Brendanâs teacher!
And they almost met!
Deirdre pulled out her phone shakily. It was still too new to her, so she fumbled with the buttons for a bit before finally hearing the dial tone. When the call connected, she could hear construction sounds from Tobeyâs end.
He found a place quiet enough and asked, âDee? Whatâs wrong?â
ââTobey!â she cried out, shutting her eyes and opening them again. Her voice sounded like it was fleeing from her throat. âCan you come to the Wardsâ place? I⦠I almost met Brendan!â
Brendan hurried toward the company Sam had told him about while Henry gushingly greeted him with the force of an elephantâs stampede. âMr. Brighthall, welcome! Welcome! Iâve heard so much about you! Iâm the COO of Woody Inc., Henry Walker.â
Brendan sniped a snide glance at Henryâs outreached hand and ignored him. He looked at Sam instead. âWhereâs the lead to Deirdre McKinnon?â
Henry retracted his hand as Sam stared at him expectantly. âAccording to Mr. Walker, heâs seen Russell and Miss McKinnon both. Russell had even spent a few days working for him, and in that period, Deirdre stayed with him in one of the hostels for the employees.â
