âWhy are you so careless?â Glenna heaved a sigh and could not refrain from asking, âHave both of you reconciled?â
âUs?â Deirdre was confused. âWho? Kyran and I? Havenât we always been very good with each other?â
âBut-â
âGlenna, come with me outside. I have something that I would like to talk to you about.â
Declan caught Glenna by surprise by interrupting her such that her words were stuck in her throat.
Deirdre was utterly confused. She could only feel Kyranâs grip on her hand growing stronger without his notice.
âKyran, my hand hurts.â
Kyran loosened his grip abruptly after he was reminded by Deirdre and said gently, âIâm sorry.â
Deirdre shook her head smilingly and said to Declan and Glenna, âWhy do you have to talk outside?
Itâs so cold outside. You should come inside and talk. Itâs almost time for lunch anyway. Stay so you can have a taste of my cooking together.â
Declan said smilingly, âIt seems that I came at the right time today. Iâm in luck for a feast.â
âYes.â Deirdre said, âWe bought some drinks too yesterday. Itâs a good time to celebrate now that we have all finally gathered after more than a month.â
Deirdre went to work by rolling up her sleeves and giving instructions to Kyran so he could help her to grab her apron. She tied up her apron and began bustling about in the kitchen. She suddenly remembered that she had a flour bag stored in the second floorâs utility room.
She clapped to turn off the stove and walked upstairs. She walked past a room and heard the ferocious quarrel coming from inside.
Deirdre halted to a stop and heard Glenna say, âWhy are you doing this? What youâre doing will make her live in deceit for the rest of her life. Do you think this is fair for her?â
It was Deirdreâs first time hearing Glenna lose her temper. She remembered that Glenna was a well-
tempered person and was always positive and bubbly, as if she would never experience any frustration in her life.
Deirdre could not help feeling alarmed by Glennaâs sudden change. She walked closer and heard Declanâs gentle voice saying, âWhat do you think is fair?
What is unfair? I think that it would be unfair to reveal the truth to her. It will be cruel to her. You should continue to get on with her for some time. You will then discover that this is the best life for her.â
âThe best?â Glenna was so furious that she laughed.
âYouâve disappointed me too much, Mr. King. I never imagined that youâd say something like this ⦠Do you think she will be happy because you fabricated a happy environment filled with countless lies? Do you have the courage to let her find out the truth? Do you?â
Declan said in a slightly indifferent tone, âGlenna, youâre being too emotional.â
âEmotional?â Glenna was crestfallen. âYou will never understand how cruel this is for a woman.â
Deirdre was utterly perplexed. âWhat do they mean by fair and unfair? What does she mean by fabricating a happy environment? What does he mean by having the courage to let her find out the truth?
âWho is the âherâ that they are referring to?*
Deirdre clenched her fists tightly without her notice and wanted to listen closer.
âDeirdre!â
All of a sudden, Kyran walked out of another room and grabbed her arm in agitation after seeing her.
âWhy are you here?â
âMe?â Deirdre furrowed her eyebrows. She was in pain from Kyranâs grip.â Iâm here to get some flour.
Iâm out of flour in the kitchen.â Kyran asked in an exploratory manner, âSo did you⦠overhear anything?â
âIâd almost forget if you didnât bring it up.â Deirdre said softly, âI overheard Glenna and Mr. King quarreling. Do you know whatâs going on between them?â
