It was one of those rare off days during a packed schedule.
The Mumbai rains had turned the city into a dreamy haze, and the team had decided to stay in their hotel to relax. Ishan, however, had other plans.
"Surya bhaiya!" Ishan barged into Surya's room, dripping wet from his brief escapade to the balcony. "The rain is perfect. Let's go out for chai and vada pav!"
Surya looked up from the book he was reading, his trademark smile appearing. "And you're already drenched like a chicken. Can't even sit still for five minutes, can you?"
Ishan plopped himself on the edge of Surya's bed, leaving a small wet patch. "Come on, bhaiya. We never get days like this. Let's just go! Please?" He gave Surya his best attempt at puppy eyes.
Surya sighed dramatically but stood up anyway. "You're impossible. Alright, but if we get stuck in traffic or I catch a cold, you're paying for the medicines."
"Deal!" Ishan grinned, grabbing Surya's arm and dragging him toward the door.
The two found themselves at a cozy roadside stall, the rain still drizzling lightly around them.
They huddled under the small tin roof, surrounded by the smell of frying batter and steaming chai.
Surya watched as Ishan gleefully bit into his vada pav, crumbs falling all over his shirt. "You eat like a toddler, Ishan," he teased, shaking his head.
"That's because I'm happy," Ishan retorted, taking another massive bite. "And food tastes better when you eat it like this."
Surya chuckled, taking a sip of his chai. "You're such a kid sometimes."
"And you're such a dad sometimes," Ishan shot back, grinning cheekily.
Surya leaned back against the bench, watching the rain with a small smile. "You know, Ishan, you remind me of why it's important to enjoy the little things. Sometimes I get so caught up in everything that I forget."
Ishan blinked at him, surprised by the sudden shift in tone. "You've always been the steady one, Surya bhaiya. We all look up to you for that. But.... even you need to let loose sometimes. That's why I'm here!"
For a moment, they sat in comfortable silence, the rain providing a soothing backdrop.
"Alright," Surya said, standing up and stretching. "Let's head back before the guys start wondering if we've run off somewhere."
"Or they might think we've eloped," Ishan joked, earning a light smack on the head.
"Keep dreaming," Surya said, though his laughter betrayed the mock sternness.
As they walked back to the hotel, sharing Surya's umbrella, Ishan hummed a tune, and Surya couldn't help but feel grateful for the ray of sunshine that was Ishan Kishan.
Sometimes, all you needed was a rainy day and a vada pav to remind you of life's simplest joys.
The rain continued to drizzle as Surya and Ishan strolled back, sharing a vibrant umbrella with a cricket logo on it.
Ishan was humming a random tune, occasionally swaying dramatically to make Surya laugh.
Just as they reached the hotel's entrance, they spotted Shubmam and Abhishek huddled under a massive umbrella that had clearly seen better days.
Shubman, always the neat one, was frowning at the muddy puddles while Abhishek tried to splash him on purpose.
"Hey, lovebirds!" Ishan called out, his voice echoing through the empty street.
"Speak for yourself, Kishan," Shubman shot back, though his cheeks turned slightly pink.
Abhishek grinned, flicking some water toward Ishan. "What's this? Surya bhaiya taking you on a date?"
Ishan clutched his chest in mock offense. "Jealousy doesn't suit you, Abhishek. But yes, Surya bhaiya and I had the most romantic time over vada pav."
Surya sighed, though a small smile tugged at his lips. "Ishan, behave. You're making it sound like a scandal."
"Scandals are fun!" Ishan quipped, dodging the playful smack Surya aimed at him.
Back in the hotel lobby, they found Tilak sprawled on a couch, scrolling through his phone.
He looked up when he saw the group, his eyes lighting up. "You guys went out without me? Not fair!"
"You were busy snoring," Ishan teased, plopping down beside him and dripping water on Tilak's shirt.
Tilak groaned. "Ugh, you're soaked. And you didn't even bring me vada pav?"
"I told you we should've brought extras," Surya said, shaking his head at Ishan.
"Fine, I'll make it up to you," Ishan declared, grabbing Tilak's arm. "Let's all head to the rooftop! The view's amazing in this weather."
A few minutes later, the group was on the hotel's rooftop, the city's skyline shimmering in the rain.
Bumrah, who had been enjoying a quiet moment with his coffee, raised an eyebrow as the noisy group arrived.
"Didn't realize this was a party," Bumrah said dryly, though his tone held no real annoyance.
"It's not a party without you, bhaiya!" Ishan said, his grin infectious.
Soon, the rooftop was buzzing with chatter and laughter.
Ishan and Tilak raced around, trying to catch raindrops on their tongues, while Shubman stood with his hands in his pockets, pretending not to watch Abhishek's antics.
Surya leaned against the railing, sipping on a fresh cup of chai Bumrah had made. "You really have a way of dragging everyone into your chaos, Ishan."
"It's a gift," Ishan replied, standing beside him. His voice dropped to a softer tone. "But it's also because I know they'll all enjoy it deep down, even if they pretend otherwise."
Surya glanced at him, his smile softening. "You've got a good heart, Kishan. Never lose that."
As the rain began to lighten, Shubman surprised everyone by pulling out his phone and playing a mellow tune. "Let's just enjoy the moment," he said quietly.
The group fell silent, listening to the music and the gentle patter of the rain.
Ishan leaned against Surya, Tilak settled near Abhishek, and Bumrah stood by the railing, sipping his coffee.
For that one moment, amidst the chaos of their lives, everything felt peaceful and perfect.
As the soft tune played on Shubman's phone, the rain eased into a delicate drizzle, casting a dreamy glow over the rooftop.
Ishan leaned a little closer to Surya, resting his head lightly on his shoulder.
Surya stiffened for a moment, glancing down at the younger cricketer, but the soft, contented look on Ishan's face made him relax. "You're heavy, you know that?" Surya murmured, but his voice held no real complaint.
"You're just old," Ishan quipped, his lips curling into a grin, though he didn't lift his head.
Surya shook his head, a small chuckle escaping him. "If I'm old, then why do you keep sticking to me like glue?"
"Because you're warm," Ishan replied matter-of-factly, his voice soft and sincere. "And because... you make me feel safe, Surya bhaiya."
The vulnerability in Ishan's voice caught Surya off guard. He glanced around, but the others were engrossed in their own conversations.
Shubman and Abhishek were bickering over the song choice, Tilak was scrolling through his phone, and Bumrah was still enjoying his coffee.
"You don't have to say stuff like that, you know," Surya said, his voice a little quieter now.
"But it's true," Ishan replied, finally lifting his head to meet Surya's gaze. His eyes held a rare intensity, a mix of mischief and something deeper. "You're always looking out for everyone, but who looks out for you, Surya bhaiya?"
Surya's smile faltered for a second, but he quickly recovered, ruffling Ishan's hair. "You're too dramatic, Kishan. I can take care of myself."
"Maybe," Ishan said, his voice dropping to a near whisper. "But that doesn't mean I don't want to."
For a moment, Surya didn't know how to respond. The playful glint in Ishan's eyes was still there, but it was softened by an undeniable sincerity.
"Come on," Surya finally said, standing up and offering a hand to Ishan. "Let's go for one last walk in the rain before the others drag us back inside."
Ishan grinned, grabbing Surya's hand without hesitation. "See? You're letting loose already."
As they wandered along the rooftop, the rain picking up slightly, Ishan started humming again.
Surya shook his head but let the melody wash over him.
"You know," Surya said suddenly, "you're like the rain, Ishan."
Ishan blinked, his expression a mix of surprise and curiosity. "The rain? Why?"
"You're unpredictable, sometimes annoying," Surya said, his smirk returning, "but also refreshing and... kind of necessary."
Ishan's grin widened, and he bumped his shoulder against Surya's. "And you're like the chai we just had. Warm, comforting, and a little spicy when you want to be."
Surya laughed, the sound echoing across the rooftop. "You're ridiculous."
"But you like me," Ishan teased, his voice light but his eyes holding that same sincerity from before.
Surya didn't reply immediately, instead looking out at the rain-soaked city. "Yeah, maybe I do," he said softly, almost as if to himself.
Ishan's heart skipped a beat, but he didn't push further. Instead, he looped his arm through Surya's and led him toward the railing. "Then let's make this the best rainy day ever, Surya bhaiya."
And as the rain fell around them, Surya couldn't help but think that maybe, just maybe, Ishan was right.
