Culver was currently in Olsen Group in Greene City.
He stood by the window in his office, whereas Aaron was reporting to him on his work.
âFor todayâs schedule, youâll have a meeting in the morning. Then, thereâs a charity event, and you have to visit the nursing home in the afternoon.â
âHave you included a visit to the hospital in my itinerary?â
Aaron was confused, âHospital? Are you injured?â
Only then did Culver come to his senses. He realized that he shouldnât have said those words.
âForget it. Continue!â
Aaron was filled with curiosity, and he figured it out after thinking for a while.
Therefore, he took the initiative to explain the situation.
âMr. Luther is still hospitalized, but there isnât a big problem.â
Culver glanced at him, âThatâs none of my business.â
âAh, I understand. What concerns you is Miss George. Sheâs just fine, and she hasnât visited Mr. Luther in the past few days.â
Upon hearing about Naomi, he couldnât help smiling. With that being said, he rolled his eyes at Aaron at the next moment.
âDid I ask about her?â
Aaron was rendered speechless.
Uneasiness was written all over Culverâs face in spite of his reluctance to admit it.
âNo, you didnât ask me about her. Iâm sorry for being too presumptuous,â Aaron had to swallow his grievance and continue reporting about the arrangements.
âIâll deduct your bonus!â
Aaron was at a loss for words.
Not long after that, Aaronâs phone rang.
He took a look at it. The call was from his subordinate, who had been ordered by him to keep a watchful eye on the situation in the hospital. The subordinate should be calling to report about the latest progress. However, he was quite hesitant to pick up the call.
In the end, he decided not to answer it as he thought Culver was still irritated about the matter in the hospital.
After thinking for a while, he put his phone back into his pocket. Unexpectedly, in the next second, Culver said, âIf you donât pick up the call, your bonus will be docked!â
Aaronâs jaw dropped as he heard that.
He was clearly in a dilemma over how to deal with his capricious boss.
He had to answer the call in the end.
âSir, in regards to Miss George, she-â
âItâs working hours now. Who permitted you to talk about irrelevant affairs? Iâll take away your bonus!â
Aaron was completely flummoxed.
He pondered, âYou were the one who told me to answer it. After I did so, you forbade me from reporting it to you?â
He pursed his lips in frustration. He had made up his mind that he would not say anything else afterwards.
After a while, he thought he had finally come to an end of his report.
âMr. Olsen, thatâs all with your schedule. If youâll excuse me, Iâm going to make arrangements for the event in the afternoon.â
âAre you sure youâve reported everything?â
Aaron checked the schedule in his hands again before he replied, âYes, Iâm very sure!â
âYour bonus will be-â
Before Culver could finish his sentence, Aaron had already started pleading with him.
âSir, please donât do this to me!â
âDo you need me to repeat myself?â
Aaron felt wronged.
âIâve indeed finished reporting the schedule, but not the matter in the hospital. Do you want to hear it?â
âI didnât say that I wanted to.â
Aaron was rendered speechless.
He thought to himself, âI wonât believe your words now, youâre so deceitful! If I donât tell you, youâll surely deduct my bonus later.â
Aaron gritted his teeth, mustered the courage, and told the news to Culver.
âMiss George went to the hospital to see Mr. Luther.â
Upon hearing this, Culver, who had been composed just then, stood up and asked anxiously, âWhen?â
âWhen I answered the call just now.â
âWhy didnât you say it earlier?â
âYou said you didnât want to hear it.â
âYour bonus is gone!â
Then, Culver instantly rushed out of the office.
Aaron was so exasperated that he almost pulled his hair out!
He resolved that in the future, he would treat everything related to Naomi as top priority.
â¦
Meanwhile, Naomi was standing in front of the door to Nelsonâs ward.
Although she hadnât paid him a visit in the past few days, she was aware of his state. After all, there was a loquacious person by her side. Emma would tell her all the events that had happened.
Naomi almost couldnât stand her big mouth. Hence, she asked Emma.
Hence, she asked Emma, âDidnât he lie to you in the past? Why are you beginning to speak for him now?â
Emma pursed her lips and said, âWell, people change. Doubtlessly, he lied to me at that time, and I hated him so much.â
âHowever, when I saw how he protected you, I canât help but sympathize with his misfortunes.â
Naomi rolled her eyes at her, âYouâll be easily cheated again if you behave like this.â
âNo, I wonât! By the way, Iâve helped you find out how he got out of the prison earlier. It turns out that he donated one of his kidneys for scientific research to make a requisition for a commutation of his sentence. He did so just to come out and see you!â
Naomi paused for a long time. She really couldnât believe it.
Emma added, âHe was lucky though. There happened to be a significant breakthrough in that particular research, so thatâs why the commutation of his sentence was authorized.â
Naomi took a deep breath.
âPerhaps he came out for other reasons.â
âThen, tell me, why did he come all the way to Greene City and hang around in the place where you will normally appear every day?â
Naomi was stumped by her question, as Emmaâs words made sense.
âAnyway, I wonât keep you any longer. I know that your mind is in turmoil right now. If I were you, I wouldnât be any better. However, remember, no matter what happened in the past, it has nothing to do with our current lives now. This time, he did save you. Thus, I think you should at least go and visit him to express your gratitude to him. I have prepared some gifts for him on behalf of you. You can just take them with you when youâre going to visit him.â
â¦
Naomi was grasping the gift bag in her hand while a nurse came near her.
âExcuse me, miss, are you here to visit the patient?â
Naomi was about to say ânoâ when she heard Nelsonâs voice.
âNaomi, is that you?â
Naomi didnât answer him. She turned around and wanted to leave, but the nurse caught her attention with a sigh.
âThis patient is really pitiful. Initially, I thought he was just suffering from a normal injury. However, after he was given a full body checkup, I found that his body has been in poor health. All of his test results were alarming, and none of his family members have visited him!â
What Emma said came to Naomiâs mind, so she changed her mind, opened the door, and went into the ward.
âItâs me.â
Nelson was lying on the bed, looking haggard.
Seeing Naomi come in, his eyes glittered with excitement. Then, he struggled to sit up.
âNaomiâ¦â
âDonât get up. Iâm just here to visit you.â
Putting the gifts on the cabinet, Naomi moved half a step towards him.
He still sat up on the bed although Naomi had told him not to. After that, he rubbed his hair embarrassingly.
âIâm sorry for looking so untidy. I didnât know that you would come.â
Then, there was an awkward silence in the ward. Therefore, Naomi took the initiative to speak.
âDo you want some water? Iâll pour some for you.â
Nelson didnât refuse her invitation.
âThank you.â
Naomi took a deep breath, turned around, poured a glass of water and put it on the bedside cabinet. She said, âIâm going to find a straw for you.â
âThereâs no need for that. Naomi, Iâm very happy to see you! In the past, I-â
Naomi pursed her lips as she interrupted him, âLet bygones be bygones. Iâve already moved on, and you should also do the same. Now that youâre out, why donât you think about the future? Find a job, start over, and donât follow me around anymore.â
Hearing that, the sparkle in his eyes slowly faded away.
âNaomi, I know you wonât forgive me. I donât yearn for much. All I hope is to meet up with you occasionally, and then I will be content.â
Naomi was hesitating to say something when the door behind her was suddenly pushed open by someone.
âNo, you wonât be satisfied!â
Culver walked in from the doorway, panting. He was glaring hostilely towards Nelson.
