Dunn settled into his home and activated the communication feature on his smartwatch to reach Aurora.
âAurora, can you come over? I gotta tell you something super important about your real dad.â
Aurora exchanged a look with Leah, who was busy with Ryland.
âDunn, is it about the daddy test?â
âYes.â
This test had lingered over them, heavy with implications, and now that he had the results, Dunn wanted Aurora to hear them from him.
âAlright.â Aurora promised quietly, a mix of anticipation and nervousness in her voice.
Soon after, Aurora, with her playful charm and sweet words, persuaded Leah to take her and Ryland to the Finch family. Gracie and Fred welcomed them, suggesting the children could play together.
âAurora, Ryland, letâs go play in the study,â Dunn invited as he led the way to his study.
Securing Ryland in a cozy corner of the room, Dunn carefully opened the sealed envelope.
Aurora watched as Dunn began to read aloud from the document.
âThe opinion of the test supports a biological relationship.â Her expression clouded with confusion, Aurora hesitated before asking, âDoes this mean Daddyâs not my real father?â
âYes,â Dunn confirmed somberly. âThe results confirm that Adrian is your dad.â
âNo! My dad is my dad!â Aurora protested vehemently, tears brimming in her eyes.
âAurora, please, donât cry,â Dunn implored, hastily rising from his chair to fetch tissues for her.
After a few moments, Auroraâs sobs subsided. Sniffling, she declared, âDunn, I donât accept this. I need to talk to my dad.â
âYou meanâ¦?â
âMy doctor dad!â
Understanding her need, Dunn nodded. âWe should talk to him, yes. But I heard that he is far away now. Weâre just kids. We canât just go looking for him.â
âDunn, you have to help me! I donât know what to do. Youâre the smartest!â Aurora pleaded, her hands tugging his arm.
Pondering briefly, Dunn stood again and retrieved his laptop. âI can send an email to him, though Iâm not sure heâll get it right away.â
âEmail?â Aurora watched quietly from the side, her right foot tapping lightly on the floor as she observed Dunn.
She explained to Dunn what she wanted to say to Rafael, and Dunnâs small hands typed on the keyboard, his fingers moving clumsily but accurately.
Ryland, abandoning his toy car, crawled over to Dunnâs side to gaze at the laptop screen.
Gracie and Fred peeked into the room to check on them. âOh, theyâre playing on the computer. Dunn, remember to take a break soon!â
âOkay,â Dunn responded, nodding obediently.
The easygoing couple left the room with a smile.
Soon, the email was ready, and Dunn read it over.
âDear Dad, itâs Aurora. Dunn found your email for me so I could write to you. I miss you so much, Dad. Have you forgotten about me? Everyone says Adrian Miller is my real dad. Why do they say that? Youâre my real dad, right? I really need to know whatâs happening. Please tell me, Dad. I miss youâ¦â
Meanwhile, Adrian and Joelle were at opposite ends of the sofa. Adrian was deep in conversation with Callan.
âMr. Miller, the hotelâs back and side doors are monitored. If you leave, it will be noticed.â
Adrian massaged his forehead, fatigued. âFind another way.â
âUnderstood.â
Joelle sighed, her gaze falling to her hands. âIt looks like we canât leave tonight without Lacey catching on.â
Adrian looked over at her. âWould you consider staying the night here?â
Joelle paused, deep in thought, before responding, âI need to call Leah first.â
âAnd what will you tell her?â
âAsk her to sleep with the kids tonight.â
Adrian grasped her intention but remained cautious, not allowing himself to expect too much from the evening.
He had worked diligently for another opportunity to win Joelle over and knew he had to tread lightly with every word and gesture, wary of jeopardizing his fragile gains.
Knock. Knock.
There was a gentle tapping at the door.
Approaching the door, they found the hotel owner accompanied by a woman donning glasses and sporting bangs, presenting a simple demeanor.
âLacey has arranged a photography session for you both,â the owner announced.
âPhotography?â
âYes, itâs for capturing special moments together.â
Joelleâs cheeks tinged with color. âNo, that wonât be necessary!â The photographer, seeming somewhat shy and less outgoing, clarified, âItâs merely for still photos, not a video. We aim to capture the essence of your daily interactions, so every time you look at these images, youâll be reminded of your beautiful moments together.â
Joelle recalled that Gracie and Fred had participated in a similar photo shoot. Such sessions were common among loving couples in her circle.
Despite her initial hesitation, she knew that securing an appointment with this photographer was not an easy feat, suggesting the hotel must have made significant efforts to arrange her visit.
