Chapter 0424 Hannah The festival was in full swing by the time Viona, Drake and I walked in. String lights zigâzagged between towering trees, food stands smelled fragrantly of fried dough and roasted walnuts, couples wandered around handâinâhand.
And up ahead, I saw Noah approaching.
My spine straightened the moment I saw him. He wore an army green jacket and dark jeans cuffed around leather boots, his dark hair peeking out from beneath a black beanie.
He looked so... relaxed. Casual. Nothing at all like the rigid Alpha Iâd once been married to.
Viona smirked and nudged me with her elbow as he approached. âHere comes Prince Charming.â
I blushed, but didnât have time to come up with a retort before Noah was stopping in front of me with that serene smile on his face, his hands stuffed into his pockets.
âHannah. You look nice.â
Blushing even harder, I looked down at my outfitâa simple pair of jeans and a sweater. It was chilly out this time of evening, and seeing how the festival was all outside, I wanted to dress for practicality rather than style.
But the compliment was nice.
âThanks. You donât look halfâbad yourself.â
Noahâs smile widened slightly, and he turned to Drake and Viona. âAre you guys-â
âNope. You two can be all loveyâdovey on your own,â Drake said, draping his arm around Viona and leading her away. The two of them immediately veered into the crowd and disappeared, clearly not wanting to linger in the stench of our awkwardness any longer than they needed to.
âWell then.â Noah turned back to me and extended his hand. âShall we?â
Nodding, I tentatively took his handâtrying not to let my mind fixate on how warm and comforting his palm felt against mineâand followed him into the festival.
As we walked, I couldnât help but think about my little visit with Alvin the other day. It had been on my mind all week, keeping me up at night. âSo,â I said, glancing over at Noah, âI talked to Alvin. Well, tried to, at least.â
âOh?â Noah raised an eyebrow. âHow did it go?â
I shrugged. âHe remained silent, of course. This is all so... frustrating.â
âYou can say that again.â Noahâs face hardened, and I knew he was thinking about Zoe. Noticing me looking, he sighed and said, âTheyâll all be behind bars soon. I know itâs not the most satisfying thing, the waiting part of it all, but itâs almost over.â
I pursed my lips, considering for a moment. âSometimes I just wish that the big comeuppance at the wedding had been the final part of it. That it could be like the movies and theyâd all be thrown in prison 1/3.
Chapter 0424 immediately with no trial and theyâd confess to all of their crimes from the getâgo.â
Noah snorted. âIf only the real world were that simple.â
Noah was right; it wasnât that simple. Maybe once, many years ago, Alphas could take whichever prisoners they liked, make their own laws, treat their pack land like its own independent country.
+25 BONUS But those days had also been rife with troubleâthanks to Alphas who could essentially do whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted.
That was why the Alpha Council had been createdâa world government of sorts. A standardized set of laws and policies across all packs, with actual repercussions for the Alphas who stuck to the old ways. It was a way to keep peoplesâ rights protected and avoid flatâout civil war.
But while the Alpha Council created a lot of good in the world, the bureaucracy of it all could sometimes get... tiring.
âOur trials are in a month,â I mused as we meandered through the denselyâpacked stalls, our hands still intertwined. âI have no doubt that the Council will deem Alvin guilty. But Zoe...â
Noah stopped in his tracks at the mention of her name and turned to look at me. âHannah, I think Iâd just like to enjoy tonight without thinking of them, if thatâs okay.â
I felt a heat creep up my cheeks. âYouâre right. Iâm sorry. Itâs just hard to shut that part of my brain off sometimes.â
âI understand completely.â Noah gave my hand a squeeze, his expression reassuring. âBut I, too, have no doubt that the Council will put Zoe behind bars.â
I nodded, managing a small smile. I was certain that Noah was working diligently to collect evidence in preparation of the trial.
We both were.
âA flower for the lovely couple?â
The sound of an old womanâs voice caused us both to turn, facing a flower peddler with a basket of roses hooked over one arm.
She held one rose out to Noah, a smile on her weathered face. âSuch a beautiful Alpha and Luna.â
Oh, great, I thought, wondering if I should correct her on the title or if it wasnât worth it.
But Noah beat me to it.
âWeâre actually both Alphas.â
âOh?â The woman raised her eyebrows and looked at me, shocked. I would have said something had I not been just as shocked as she was. I supposed I shouldnât have been so surprised anymore at Noahâs change in demeanor, but...
Still. Hearing him use my title like that made something flutter in my chest.
âYes. Women can be Alphas, too,â Noah said kindly as he reached into his wallet and withdrew a few bills The woman cocked her head. âBut you are Noah and Hannah, are you not? I thought you got back together after that whole ordeal with that awful girl... I saw it on the news!â
âWeâre dating.â Noah continued to smile politely and held the bills out. âI know it seems like weâre back 2/3 Chapter 0424 +25 BONUS together, but...â He glanced at me. âWell, donât get me wrong, I would love to marry Hannah all over again, But I didnât treat her as well as I should have during our marriage. So right now, we are rebuilding trust, one step at a time.â
I didnât know what to say. My mouth worked uselessly, like a puppet on strings. And all the while, those green eyes just looked at me, a soft smile stretched across Noahâs slender lips.
With a chuckle, the woman took Noahâs cash and handed him the rose. âHow sweet,â she said, already spotting more customers now that she was finished with us. âBest of luck to you!â
Once she was gone, Noah turned to me and held out the rose between us. âFor the lady.â
In those moments, the rest of the festival seemed to slip away. There were no string lights, no vendors, no other couples. Just us and a single red rose.
I gingerly took the rose, our fingertips touching as I did.
âThank you,â I murmured, carefully prodding the petals with my index finger. âDid you... Did you really mean all that?â
Noah nodded. âI hope it wasnât too much.â
quickly shook my head, my eyes meeting his. âNo. It was perfect. Thank you for saying that.â
Noahâs shoulders almost seemed to slump with relief. He opened his mouth as if to say something, but. before he could, a voice suddenly came on over the loudspeakers.
âLadies and gentlemen... Ultimate Frisbee is about to begin! Join us on the athletic field if youâd like to play!
My eyes lit up at the thought of a game, my wolf bristling with excitement inside of me. âFrisbee,â I echoed, feeling like a little kid again. âI havenât played in so long...â
Noah, noticing my fervor, chuckled and began pulling me toward the field.
âCome on, then. Letâs play.â
