Li Liangxing stepped out of the building feeling a bit dazed.
It was the beginning of February in the afternoon, and the sunshine was warm.
He glanced down at the script in his hands, still feeling somewhat unreal. Had he really gotten the script? Filming was scheduled to start next week, sooner than he had anticipated.
Thinking of Xu Qingyanâs words, âThe company structure is light, the smaller the company, the quicker the action,â he couldnât help feeling invigorated; he had a week to familiarize himself with the script.
Sitcoms relied heavily on the screenwriters, and while Li Liangxing was overflowing with gratitude towards âProducer Xu,â his confidence was lacking; he had absolute faith in the talents who could write such a script.
The scripts he used to get were basically just a few pages, sometimes only a few sentences. Now, he held entire settings collections and some of the characterâs lines.
For this reason, he knew he had to put in the thought to ponder the character. Li Dazui wasnât a particularly major role, but the character had depth to be explored.
The more he thought about it, the more the script seemed like a towering mountain.
After Li Liangxing left, Xu Qingyan couldnât resist giving himself a light slap on the cheek. He started to regret letting slip that filming would start next week.
Actually, the situation was that they had the script, the funding was in place, and in the next few days, he was supposed to meet with the director introduced by Sister Jun. Besides an empty shell company and a script, he had nearly nothing prepared.
Looking around, his capable aide Zhou Mian was still in chaos. Gan Wenchang, the young master, was still busy being a salted fish in the system, likely having no time to engage in his minor project.
Lin Chuan couldnât be of much help, after half a yearâs absence, he still had to continue to strive.
It was a good thing he had a knack for mooching off somebody; otherwise, Xu Qingyan wouldnât dare to go all-in on the abridged âThe Legend of Martial Artsâ script without a fallback plan.
The next day, Gan Wenchang called.
âYouâre really a genius, I should have known that you would be collaborating with Heâs outfit without even giving me a heads-up!â
âAre you just starting your investigations now?â Xu Qingyan frowned on the other end of the line, gauging his schedule, âWhenever you go to the southern Yunnan region, Iâll join you.â
âThe investigationâs already done, the one Heâs gone off to. Just come straight to Capital City next week. We have to select a script here, anyway, be ready,â Gan Wenchang said.
Gan Wenchangâs words left Xu Qingyan somewhat astonished; things seemed to be⦠different from what they had previously agreed. Had there been a change because only He Guojin had gone to the southern Yunnan region?
âWhatâs happened?â After pondering for a moment, Xu Qingyan spoke up, âLast month⦠Anyway, they told me at the time that we were going to Yunnan region together as a group to inspect.â
âHow did it turn into He going alone? And he didnât inform me.â
âItâs a long story, and Iâve only found out in the last few days,â Gan Wenchang spoke vaguely over the phone, âLetâs talk when you come to Capital City.â
âFine,â Xu Qingyan hung up the phone.
He furrowed his brow slightly, but he wasnât too regretful. Red-themed screenplays were tricky, and it was unlikely that he could really make a grand entrance on this theme.
Just by putting in a little effort, he would be helping He Guojin. At the same time, he could gain some benefits that commercial drama couldnât offer, such as connections with people like He Guojin and Xiao Shujun.
These people were just like professors at university; only within a project could Xu Qingyan interact with them without any barriers. Once separated from the project, it became difficult.
Just as college students enter a company and only occasionally find out that the teacher who gave them water lessons is someone their boss cannot even curry favor with.
Xu Qingyan was a straightforward person, he would fight for any advantage he could get.
Another two days passed.
Xu Qingyan had already forgotten about the coffee shop incident, but Zhou Mian called to say he was going through a divorce and might very well end up without a penny.
There was an ongoing fuss with his parents, and he hadnât yet gone to offer comfort.
âBrother Xu, Iâm coming to work with you,â Zhou Mian said in his hearty way.
âSure, come over, you know the company address,â he replied directly, without saying anything about marriage or parents.
Matters like these had nothing to do with him; sometimes meddling too much can cost one friends. Being too kind to friends can also eventually pressure them.
As for leaving penniless and parental disapproval, he pretended he hadnât heard. People are not calm when they are impulsive; what if he said some hard truth that was rememberedâ¦
âAre you free this afternoon?â Pei Muchan asked.
âUhm⦠I have to meet someone, a director,â Xu Qingyan lifted his head to look at her, a hint of puzzlement in his eyes, âWhatâs up, anything wrong?â
âNo, nothing,â Pei Muchan shook her head, âThereâs a partner meeting for lunch this afternoon, and if youâre not busy, you can join us.â
âWeâll see, if it finishes early Iâll join in.â Xu Qingyan couldnât be sure, he knew Pei Muchan also had her circle of friends, but he had never seen them.
In fact, Pei Muchan didnât meet with friends when she wasnât working. In the end, it was because she was too homebound, spending her days either working or staying at home.
Before, he had thought Pei Muchanâs behavior was normal, until he saw the WeChat moments of movie star Luo Yuexiu filled with photos of her having fun with friends, and he realized Pei Muchanâs homebound nature.
This was actually the first time in half a year that he was set to meet Pei Muchanâs circle of friends, and he found the prospect quite⦠magical. But he genuinely did not have time that afternoon; he had an important person to meet.
The young director Xiao Shujun had mentioned on New Yearâs Eve had cleared his schedule entirely, and today he was landing in Xinghai, with a meeting arranged to talk about the script.
A man still needed to prioritize his career, lest he risk losing both personal and financial stability.@@novelbin@@
Pei Muchan didnât take the rejection too much to heart; she simply nodded and turned to leave.
She had felt fine at first as she walked through the hallway into the recording studio. Just as she sat down, contemplating the rejection, she couldnât help but throw a punch at the toy on the control desk.
