Angeline wanted to wait until Azura was willing to bring the child out to meet her.
When she thought about how the child was trapped in such a dangerous family, her anxiety flared up, especially when she still hadnât heard a single peep from the child despite standing there for so long already.
âCalm down. I heard from the village chief that the child is well-protected. People are sent to check on him on a regular basis. The man was just grumbling. Iâm sure he wouldnât do anything to the child,â
Jonathan comforted.
Seeing that she didnât reply, he continued advising while wearing a calm and composed expression.
âOnly more danger awaits if you remain here. You should return and come up with a plan. Sooner or later, youâll be able to meet the child.â
In response, Angeline clenched her fists as she struggled to make a decision.
At that moment, her mind was a jumbled mess.
While she couldnât think straight, she could still tell Jonathan said that for her own good. Heâs right.
Rather than staying here pointlessly, I should return and come up with a solution.
As the sun rose and illuminated the entire village, a few villagers carrying hoes stepped out of their homes and glanced at the duo, flabbergasted.
They should leave as quickly as possible if they didnât want to alert the villagers and draw attention to themselves.
Unwilling to give up, Angeline continued fixing her gaze on the door, trying to find any traces of the child. However, she was dragged forcefully into the car by Jonathan.
Meanwhile, Evander and Floretta had arrived at Hallsbayâs airport. Before they could even return home to deposit their luggage, Evander asked Sylas to drive them to Angelineâs place.
The father-daughter duo stood at the door and rang the doorbell repeatedly. Alas, no one responded even after a long time. A grim expression appeared on their faces.
Evander lowered his head and glanced at the disappointed Floretta. As his heart ached, he tightened his grip on her tiny hand and suggested softly, âLetâs go home, okay?â
âI donât want to. I want to wait here for Angel.â As she stood with arms akimbo, she stared at her father begrudgingly and pouted, âI bet you pissed Angel off again, which is why sheâs not here! I want you to apologize to her, Daddy.â
Upon hearing that, a troubled expression formed on his face as he bent down and patted her head.
âAngeline has only been in your life for a few months while Iâve been by your side for five years, Floretta. Donât you think itâs a little unfair for you to say something like that?â
Only then did Floretta stifle her anger and lowered her eyes apologetically. âIâm sorry, Daddy.â
However, in the next second, she raised her head again and uttered in a serious tone, âAlthough, I thought being in love with someone means that you have to take the initiative and reach out. Do you really not want to have a romantic relationship with Angel?â
Evander was stunned by the girlâs words.
When Angelineâs smile flashed past his mind, the look in his eyes turned tender. His slender finger traced along Florettaâs nose bridge as he stared at her with amusement. âWho taught you this?â
He didnât deny it! This means Iâm right! Florettaâs big eyes were filled with anticipation as she grabbed his arm and smiled sweetly. âSince you like her, you should buy a diamond ring and propose to her quickly. Angel is very popular. What if she was lured away and ended up becoming someone elseâs mommy?â
Jonathan frowned in response.
When he thought about the amount of care Jacob showed Angeline in Summerbank, dissatisfaction lined his charming face.
To him, the only flaw about Angeline was that she was surrounded by too many men, which wasnât a good sign.
As the father-daughter pair were chatting about getting a diamond ring, Jonathan was driving Angeline back home from the countryside.
Due to a severe lack of sleep, Angeline looked haggard and listless. Her face seemed pale as well.
âWeâre here,â he informed.
âThank you,â she replied with a hoarse voice.
She unbuckled her seatbelt, and before she got off the car, she turned her sight to Jonathan and asked hesitantly, âCan you help me investigate another thing?â
âGo ahead.â He removed a cigarette from his pocket, tilted his head, and lit it with a lighter.
She stared at the sparks on the tip of his lit cigarette and coughed a few times before saying seriously, âItâs about my parents. I donât think they died due to an accident.â
Jonathan sneered, âI thought you wonât suspect anything about that.â
Taking in his calm expression, Angelineâs drowsiness dissipated as she widened her eyes. âDo you know something about it?â
She couldnât believe she didnât think of the possibility earlier. Considering the fact that Jonathan knows so much about my child, thereâs no doubt he knows a thing or two about my parentsâ death.
Gazing back at her, he asked in a deep voice, âConsider this. Whoâll benefit the most from your parentsâ
passing?â
Angeline froze as she contemplated his question. Then, a shiver ran down her spine when realization dawned on her.
Through gritted teeth, she shouted, âJoseline!â
Less than a month after her parentsâ passing, Joseline misappropriated the shares. Moreover, Wilfred stepped down from the companyâs helm when his health deteriorated due to his inability to accept that tragedy.
Thus, Joseline became the CEO and was proudly in charge of the entire company.
Angeline frowned deeply as a puzzled look appeared in her eyes. âNo, itâs impossible. Sure, Joselineâs a schemer, but sheâs still a member of the Sorelle family. Why would she harm her own parents?â
The smell of smoke in the vehicle dispersed after Jonathan rolled down the window. He rested one of his hands on the steering wheel lazily as he sneered, âStill donât get it? Thereâs a chance that Joseline isnât a member of the Sorelle family.â
Angelineâs eyes widened again. In an instant, she felt as though the blood in her body was rushing into her brain, so much so that she found it difficult to breathe.
The amount of information she learned over the course of the past two days was a little too overwhelming for her. Joselineâs not a member of the Sorelle family? I never wouldâve thought about that if Jonathan didnât point it out. Ever since we were children, my parents treated us equally. In fact, they treated her better. Whenever we were fighting over something, I had to be the one to back off.
However, if she already knew she wasnât part of the family, then itâs very likely that she killed my parents to silence them.
When Angelineâs train of thought ended there, she felt a chill running down her spine. It took a while before she found her voice again. âWhy should I trust you? Do you have any evidence?â
âThereâs no need to rush. The truth will show itself sooner or later,â Jonathan answered coldly.
The rearview mirror reflected his smirk and his icy gaze. âOne more thing. Joseline also sent someone to the village three days ago for an investigation. Itâs possible she had already tampered with this matter regarding the child.â
Shock and resentment filled Angelineâs eyes.
Joselineâs such a vicious woman! As Angeline was temporarily consumed by her thoughts, a thick fur coat suddenly landed on her body. She could feel Jonathanâs presence closing in on her.
Just as she was about to move away, Jonathan pressed her shoulder and whispered next to her ear, âDonât move! Someoneâs here.â
Upon hearing that, Angeline got herself together and stared out the window.
She saw Evander holding Florettaâs hand under the streetlamp while staring at her and Jonathan with a frigid look.
Angeline was bewildered. Why did they return to the country, too? They didnât hear what Jonathan and I were talking about, did they? We were pretty far away from them, so they probably didnât hear us, right?
