Chapter 1: Death of Dan

Life 2.0. Vol III: One More Collection Of Mostly Short Sweet StoriesWords: 24238

Sarah was lying on the beach, her long, sexy, tanned legs stretched out before her. The warm sand tickled her skin, exposed by her skimpy two piece swimsuit. She gazed up at the blue sky, feeling the gentle breeze ruffle her hair.

Dan, her boyfriend, was lying next to her, his head propped up on one elbow as he watched her. They'd been here for hours, just talking and enjoying the sun and the sea. It was the perfect day, Dan thought.

"Hey, Dan."

"Yeah, sweetheart?"

"Do you ever wish there was some way you could truly understand females, specifically me? I mean like, really, really know me."

Dan pondered the question for a moment,  then replied, "Yeah, I guess. Never really gave it too much thought though."

"You don't think if we truly knew each other completely,  it would mean we would be less prone to arguments brought on by simple misunderstandings?"

"Yeah, I could see that.  But how? I mean, for me to to truly know you, I'd have to walk a mile in your shoes. But that's not possible."

"But what if it were?"

"What do you mean?"

"Would you be willing to temporarily swap bodies with me if we actually could?"

Dan sat up, wrapped one arm around Sarah, and pulled her tight against him.

"Swap bodies?I don't think I'd really want to,  but if it were possible and you wanted to, I guess I'd do it for you."

"Really?"

"Yeah, for you, babe."

Sarah smiled and turned her head to look him in the eyes. "I think it might be possible."

Dan shook his head. "Nah, that's not possible."

"Don't be so sure."

"What do you mean?"

"So, I was in this store, an old used book store, and I bought this book." She leaned over and retrieved a book from her straw beach bag and handed it to Dan. "See right here in chapter four," Sarah explained as she helped Dan turn to the page she was referring to. "It's a spell for body swapping, but both people have to be in agreement about the swap. Forced swaps don't work. And then on the next page is the spell to swap back. It says it really works and it sounds simple enough. I wanna try it."

"Oh really?" Dan raised an eyebrow, a small smile forming on his lips.  "And why would you want to do that?"

"So I can understand you better. Your inner workings, what makes you tick. Annnnnndddd......I've always wondered what it's like to be able to pee standing up. Maybe you'd learn a thing or two about me, too." She paused, looking into his eyes. "Maybe we could finally stop arguing about stupid stuff and... you wouldn't like to be able to experience making love from the opposite side? I know I would."

Dan thought for a moment. "Well, if you're sure it's safe... and if we can switch back whenever we want..." He trailed off, still a bit skeptical, but intrigued by the prospect of truly understanding her.

Dan closed his eyes and took a deep breath, focusing on the feeling of the warm sun on his back. He opened his eyes again, staring at the book in his hands. He placed it into Sarah's hands and said, "Okay."

She did double take, "Wait. You're agreeing to this?"

"Yeah, let's do it."

She nodded eagerly, her heart racing with anticipation. They both read the words on the page silently, then closed their eyes and concentrated, repeating the words aloud,  in unison. After what felt like an eternity, they opened their eyes.

Dan stared at his body, then looked over at Sarah's. They both seemed unchanged. "I don't think it worked," he said, sounding disappointed.

Sarah frowned, "But we did it exactly like the book said." She opened the book again, skimming through the pages. "Maybe we have to say something else, or do something different..."

They closed their eyes again and took a deep breath. This time, they both speak the words softly, almost like a prayer. "In realms unseen where spirits tread,

We ask for balance, where faith is led,

Oh, Spirit of body swapping, hear our plea,

Grant us this wish, let our hearts be free.

With whispers soft and flames aglow,

We seek to know what others know,

To step inside another's form,

And understand the lives they’ve worn.

In tender trust, let the magic start,

As we unveil the layers of the heart,

To grasp the grief, the laughter, the glee,

To truly see, to feel, to be.

With every breath, breathe in their plight,

And see the world in a different light;

Where joy and sorrow blend and flow,

In the dance of souls, we shall grow.

Let it be done, let compassion reign,

In the sacred embrace, no more disdain,

For in this bond, oh so grand,

We rise together, hand in hand.

So, hear our chant, and let it be so,

In the spirit of love, let our spirits flow,

We wish to learn, to cherish, to grow,

In each other's skins, let our wisdom glow.

Let it be done, and let it be so."

They then sat back and waited, their hearts pounding in anticipation. The air felt thick, charged with energy. Dan began to feel a strange sensation washing over him, almost like his body was tingling. His vision blurred, and for a moment, he thought he saw Sarah start to waver. When the sensation passed, he opened his eyes again, feeling a bit lightheaded, his vision still blurred.

"Sarah?" he whispers, unsure if he was still in his own body or hers. She leaned forward and looked at him with a mixture of shock and confusion, her vision also unable to focus.

"Dan?" she asked, her voice trembling. "Do you think it's actually working. He nodded slowly, unable to believe what was happening. They both stared at each other, their expressions mirroring the confusion and amazement they were currently feeling.

The world around them seems to tilt and shift, like seeing everything through a kaleidoscope. Their senses were heightened, every touch, every sound, every smell magnified. They both began blinking, trying to clear their vision, but it only making their eyesight worse.

Dan reached out and touched Sarah's face and she did the same. They each felt the smoothness of their skin, the warmth of their breath.

"Are you... feeling this, too?" Dan asks, his voice barely audible over the pounding of their hearts, as he referred to another sensation he was feeling, like a blunt, ice cold, metal instrument was being slowly, gently brushed across his skin, in fifteen different places at the same time. Sarah nodded, tears welling up in her eyes.

They each sat up straight, taking in their surroundings, as their vision began to clear. The beach was deserted, the ocean a calm, glassy blue. A seagull called out in the distance, its cry echoing over the dunes. They both looked at each other. Dan seeing himself sitting next to him. Sarah gasping when she saw her own body next to her.

"This is... incredible," Dan whispered. He reached up and touched the chest of the body he was now in, feeling the softness of Sarah's breasts beneath his, now dainty, fingertips. He looked over at her, as she stared at her own hands, gently tracing the lines on his palms.

Sarah took a deep breath and exhaled, trying to calm her racing heart. "I can't believe this is really happening," she said in awe, her voice trembling. "I'm in your body, and I sound like you,  but I'm still me." She looks over at him, her eyes wide with wonder. "And you're in my body, but you're still you."

They both laughed nervously, still unable to believe what happened. The air felt charged with an electricity that neither of them could quite explain. They glance down at their new bodies again, marveling at the differences: the way Dan's chest hair peeked out from his shirt, the way Sarah's hips curved beneath her.

"So... what do we do now?" Dan asked, his voice high and dainty, Sarah's voice, yet still thick with disbelief. Sarah shrugged, taking a deep breath to calm herself.

"I guess.......we could........explore this?" she suggested, her heart racing. They both stood up, and took a moment to grow accustomed to a new center of balance and new weight in the new bodies. Dan felt strange moving his now, light as a feather dainty arms and legs, marveling at the sensation of being in Sarah's body. Sarah, on the other hand, found it exhilarating to move around in Dan's strong, muscular form.

They begin to walk along the beach, their fingers intertwined. The sand squishing between their toes, and the salty air tickling their skin. They paused at the water's edge, gazing out at the vast expanse ocean.

"I've always wanted to see the world from a different perspective, often wondered what life was like for boys." Sarah said, her voice dreamy. "And now I'm experiencing it." She turned to look at Dan, her eyes sparkling with curiosity and wonder. "What about you? What do you want to do?"

Dan hesitated for a moment, feeling a mix of fear and excitement course through him. "I don't know," he admits. "But I think... I think I want to explore making love with you." He reached out, brushing a lock of hair from her forehead.

Sarah's heart skipped a beat at his words, excitement coursing through her body. She looked into his eyes, searching for any sign of uncertainty, but all she saw was sincerity and a deep desire to understand what intercourse was like for a girl.

They walk hand in hand further along the beach, their bodies sinking into the warm, yielding sand. The waves crash against the shore, their rhythmic soundtrack lulling them into a sense of calm.

"Dan? Is this what an erection feels like? We need to head back to my apartment, now!" Sarah demanded with a fire lust burning in her eyes.

Dan went weak in the knees and almost stumbled when a warmth suddenly welled up within his now feminine neather regions. So this is how she feels when she gets aroused, he told himself.

"Oh, gawd," escaped from Sarah's lips. "Can we hurry up and get to my apartment,  please," she pleaded in Dan's sexy, deep voice.

"Yeah, but first of all I think we should probably call each other by the name that corresponds to the correct body. It'll look awfully odd for someone to hear you calling me Dan when I look like a sexy, angelic goddess, and me calling you Sarah when I'm obviously talking to a guy.  Don't you think?" Dan asked, his voice soft, melodic, and gentle.

He glanced down at her, well for now, his body, feeling the weight of her breasts gently bouncing on his chest.

Sarah nodded, taking a deep breath and tried to speak as if it was the first time using this new deep voice. "Okay... Sarah.... oh, that feels weird, using my own name to refer to you,  but it makes sense. Sarah, as much as I want to get there, I can't wait till we do this. Right now, I want to know what it's like for you when you kiss me." Sarah, in Dan's body, announced before leaning in and locking lips with Dan, in her body.

The sun dipped lower in the sky, casting a warm golden light across the water as they continued, locked in a romantic embrace, both relishing their first learning experience, what arousal and deep passionate kisses felt like for the opposite sex.

Sarah quickly intertwined her strong, beefy, masculine hands in between Dan's dainty, soft, feminine ones and quickly led him in the direction of her apartment, moving as fast as they could in each other's bodies.

As Dan, in Sarah's body, stepped into the library, he couldn't help but feel a mix of anticipation and apprehension. It was the second day sinch the switch, and he was here to meet Sarah so they could switch back to their own bodies, after parting from each other in order to see what it was like when they weren't together.

Dan looked around, he was early but he wondered if she was already here. The grandfather clock in the center of the room ticked loudly, its pendulum swinging back and forth, each passing second taking him closer to their rendezvous time.

He looked down at the body he was in, feeling a slight tingle of excitement as he admired, one last time, the curves he now possessed, the black hose hugging his legs, making him aware of how toned and feminine they are. The lacy white blouse, soft against his skin, accentuated the fullness of his beautiful breasts. The pleated white skirt, full and round, barely long enough to brush the top of his knees when he walked. As he waited for Sarah, he ran his hands through his long, wavy hair, reveling in the smooth texture.

It's been enlightening and a lot of fun to learn things about Sarah I'd otherwise never know, he told himself,  but it's time for me to get back to the comfort of my own body where I don't have to constantly check over my shoulder from feeling so helpless and vulnerable.

The grandfather clock struck the half-hour, and Dan glances around the library again. It was starting to become empty, devoid of students, but he still didn't see Sarah. He decided to walk around a bit, hoping he'd walk up on her. As he strolled past the bookshelves, he felt self-conscious in this body, yet marveled at how well he was walking in the low pumps he'd decided at the last minure, to experience before they changed back.

Dan continued to walk around until the clock began to strike the top of the hour, and Dan realized it was now the time they had agreed they're meet to switch back. Finding a reading area with several plush comfortable chairs, Dan took a seat, crossing his legs one over the other, and began to think back over the past almost 24 hours.

Dan hadn't really liked the idea of switching bodies with his girlfriend Sarah, but he never could say no to her. She had thought the experience would bring them closer together, but Dan hadn't really cared what the reason was. He didn't want to, but he knew it was something she really wanted to do, and so he obliged her. After all, it was only for 48 hours. But now she had him very nervous.

It was seven-thirty, but Sarah and his body were still nowhere to be seen. He tried calling his phone with hers, but she wasn't answering it. As he dialed one more time, her phone received a new text message- anxiously he opened it. It wasn't from her, but her mother.

"Oh my God, Sarah, I'm so sorry to hear about what happened to Dan- let me know if there's anything I can do for you!"

A lump formed in his throat. What was she talking about? Nervously he texted back, asking what happened, and received a response a moment later.

"You haven't heard? Your boyfriend, he was hit by a car, Sarah. They rushed him to the hospital, but he didn't make it. I'm so sorry."

Dan froze.

He was numb. The words on the screen seemed to be written in a foreign language, their meaning incomprehensible. He couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. Couldn't feel. His heart was as though it had been replaced with a lump of ice, cold and lifeless.

He stumbled out of the reading area, barely aware of the students around him. He needed air, needed to be alone. He raced out of the library, tears streaming down his face, his vision blurred. He didn't know where he was going, only that he had to get away.

The world seemed to close in on him as he ran, the walls of the campus growing taller, the buildings more oppressive. He couldn't breathe. He couldn't think. He couldn't feel anything but the all-consuming pain in his chest, the terror in his soul.

Wait? What? Sarah died?? In his body!? He was still having trouble comprehending the news. He ran into the street, narrowly missing being hit by a car he didn't see until it sped past, mere inches from him.

Dan continued to run as fast as he could in the pumps he had choisen to put on this morning, no destination in mind, just running. By the time he stopped to catch his breath, he realized he was at the end of the beach boardwalk, about to step into the sand.

After catching his breath, he reached down, removed each shoe from his feet and held them by the heels with one hand as he stepped onto the sand and slowly made his way out toward the low tide, noticing how different, how nice it felt to walk across the cool damp sand with nylon hose on his feet.

He began to think about Sarah. She'd been so excited about the switch, about experiencing things through his eyes.....and now she was gone. Just like that.

Tears streamed down his face as he thought about their first date, their first kiss, their first fight, and now it was all over. There was no more future for them. There was no more time for them to grow old together or see the world or have children and watch them grow up. It was all gone.

He looked out at the ocean, the waves crashing against the shore, the water rushing back and forth, a constant reminder of the ebb and flow of life. He wondered if Sarah was out there somewhere, looking down at him, trying to send him some sort of message. Trying to tell him it would be okay.

But it wouldn't be okay. Not without her.

Dan sat down in the wet sand, his shoulders shaking, his body wracked with sobs. He didn't know how he was going to go on. He wanted to crawl into a hole and die, just like Sarah. He wanted to feel her warmth again, hear her laughter, see her smile. He wanted to be with her, to hold her, to tell her how much he loved her. But he couldn't.

He wiped the tears from his face and took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves. He knew he had to find some sort of peace, some way to honor her memory and move on with his life. But how? How could he ever love again, when the person he loved most was gone? How could he face the world without her by his side? How could he survive having to live the rest of his life in her body, reminded of her every time he looked at himself, saw his reflection in a mirror, or went to get dressed in her clothes?

He wanted to curl up into a ball and disappear, to be anywhere but here.

===========

Dan sat on the edge of the bed, his back turned to the door, his shoulders hunched over in a protective position. It had now been three weeks since her death. He had been living like this, in Sarah's body, for three weeks now, refusing to leave her apartment, refusing to interact with anyone beyond the occasional delivery person. The world outside had become a distant, hazy place, its inhabitants little more than ghosts who moved through their lives without him.

It hadn't gotten any easier. If anything it was harder. He desperately wanted his body back. He missed his manly strength, his athletic endurance, his six foot four inches of height, his scraggly facial hair, and most of all his manhood.

He looked over at Sarah's favorite chair, the one she always sat in when she read. He pictured her curled up with a romance novel, her feet up on the chair underneath her. He thought about her paintings on the walls, the ones she had created with such love and passion. He thought about the smell of her perfume that still lingered in the air, the taste of her favorite food in the refrigerator still in the refrigerator, and her favorite lap blanket draped across one corner of her chair. Everything reminded him of her and the life they shared.

Dan placed a hand over his heart and felt Sarah's heart beating in his chest. Her beating heart was the only comfort he found from being in this body. He made a mental note to make himself go out tomorrow, to the campus store to buy one of the stethoscopes all the medical students wore around their necks, so he could listen to her heartbeat whenever he wanted.

Standing up from the bed, Dan walked over to the window, and pulled back the curtains to let sunlight in. The sun was beginning to set, painting the sky in beautiful hues of pink and orange. He thought about how Sarah had always loved the sunsets, how she would stand here, before the swap, and watch as the world slowly faded into darkness, just like he was doing now, still in her body,  and watched the world fade into darkness.

He took a deep breath and forced himself to go back into the bedroom and strip naked. He headed into her bathroom and proceeded to run the water for his only second shower in her body, keeping his eyes averted from the mirror. He room a quick shower, not allowing himself to explore her body the way he had as soon as they split up, the morning after the swap.

He headed back into the bedroom and forced himself to put on something other than the lacy blue nightgown, Sarah's favorite, he'd had on since returning there from the beach the night of her death three weeks ago.

He pulled on a pair of Sarah's loose-fitting pants and a comfortable, untucked shirt, tied her hair back into a ponytail, as she had always liked it, and buckled her dainty, cute, feminine feet into a pair of sandals. He put a little lipstick on her lips, grabbed a small bag from her closet, filling it with a few essentials, and then headed out the door, locking it behind him.

It was a warm summer evening, the air thick with the scent of jasmine and sea salt. Dan took a deep breath and began to walk, not really sure where he was going. He soon found himself walking along the beach, the same beach where they had shared so many happy moments together. The waves crashed against the shore, the sound soothing and familiar.

He thought about one of the last time he had seen Sarah in her own body, her beautiful face lit up with a smile as she ran into his arms. He remembered the way her body felt pressed against his, the sound of her laughter filling the air. It seemed like only yesterday.

Dan walked along the shore, with the sandals in his hand, his feet sinking into the soft, wet sand with each step. The waves crashed against his ankles, washing away some of the pain and grief that threatened to overwhelm him at every moment. He knew he had to find a way to move forward, to find some sort of peace.

Headed towards him, Dan saw a member of the cross-country running team, Albert. He was acutely aware that Albert was undressing Sarah's body with his lustful gaze, as he approached. Dan felt disgust as he thought about how he was stuck in this female body for the rest of his life and would have deal with those kinds of looks from guys for years to come. He shuddered at the thought, fearing the day a guy gathered to courage to try to flirt with him, and ask him on a date. He would rather die then have to deal with the romantic attention of ony man.

Dan stopped for a moment, looking out at the horizon, and had another thought, an idea. He would start a new tradition, one that would honor Sarah's memory while still allowing him to live his own life. He would return to the beach every summer on the anniversary of her passing, and he would bring with him a small bag filled with items that reminded him of her.

Dan took a seat in the sand, reached into the small bag he carried, okay, the purse, he didn't like to call it that but it was Sarah's favorite little handbag. Anyway, he reached in and pulled out a folded piece of paper and a pen. Using the light of the full moon overhead, he wrote down a list of things he wanted to include in this anniversary bag. There were her favorite earrings (which he was currently wearing), a small journal she had kept during their travels, and a handful of photographs they had taken together over the years. He would also bring a bottle of her favorite perfume, a small vial of sand she had collected from the beach on their first date, and a bottle of her favorite wine.

As he finished writing, he felt a sense of purpose returning to him. This tradition would be a way to keep Sarah alive in his heart, while also allowing him to move forward and embrace the life that lay ahead. He would create a new memory for himself each year, one that would honor her memory without being defined by it.

Dan stood up, brushing the sand from his pants, and made his way back toward her, well his apartment. As he walked, he felt a newfound sense of purpose. Returning to the beach every summer on the anniversary of her passing and bringing with him that small bag filled with items that reminded him of her would be their new tradition, a way for them to be together even though she was gone.

He knew he would always miss her, but he also knew that he couldn't live the rest of his life defined by her death. He had to embrace the life that lay ahead of him, even if it was now a life as a girl.

With a heavy heart and a renewed sense of determination, he returned to the apartment, ready to start this new chapter in his life, ready to embrace whatever came his way. At that moment it wasn't Sarah that was gone,  it was Dan, he was her now.
