Chapter 27
TESSAâS S POV
My heart was hammering in my ribcage, I wasnât concerned about the drinks that had half spilled in the tray I was holding instead I was staring at Adrian, the same way he was staring at me.
âTessa..â Adrian breathed bringing me back to the present. His eyes dimly flickered from my face to the tray of drinks in my
hands.
âAlâ¦â¦Alphaâ¦â¦â¦I meanâ¦.Alpha Adrianâ I heard myself say. Da mn it! Great, Tessa, stutter much? This was exactly what I didnât need right now. Here I was, trying to be the ever-composed medic who didnât give a dam nn about the past and here he was, trying so hard to bring up the past 1 was desperately trying to forget. Who am I kidding? He is the past precisely, the past I want to forget.
âWhoa there.â He said collecting the messy tray from my hands. Wouldnât want to get punch all over yourselfâ He joked.
His attempt at humor only added to the awkward tension in the air and after a while of staring at ourselves awkwardly in silence, he got the hint and cleared his throat.
âYou wanted to drink something this night?â He asked.
I looked down
âItâs for everyone at the med bay. I mean it was for everyone
one at the med bay sinceâ¦umm it got spilledâ I said. What is it with me and stuttering today?
âIâll get you a refillâ He offered, his gaze holding mine for a beat longer than necessary making a shiver run down my spine.
I opened my mouth in protest but he was already heading to the kitchen with the tray in his hands.
As soon as we entered the kitchen, the two cooks froze and quickly bowed.
âAlpha Adrian, Medic Tessa. What brings you by this night?â The male cook with a goatee said still bowing.
Adrian went over to the punch bowl and using a spoon, he refilled the cups.
âIâm just helping our Medic with some drinksâ he said nonchalantly.
The female cookâs mouth almost dropped to the ground. Her face was a mixture of awe and amusement. It seemed like she caught an ogre helping a rat with a mundane task.
Adrian looked at the male cook.
âWhereâs Paul?â He asked casually.
I remembered that name, he was the head chef and a buffy nice man. Seems like Adrian was familiar and friendly with the chefs in the palace.
A door leading to an inner room was pushed open and Paul walked into where we were, confusion on his face.
âWhat in the nine..â He paused, his eyes darting from the pleading look I had to the tray of punch in Adrianâs hands.
He gave a low rumble and looked at Adrian.
âBy the great howling Wolf, Alpha! Never thought Iâd see the day again!â He said chuckling
What theâ¦
Adrian chuckled also, a rumble that sent shivers down my spine.

âWell, Paul. You learn new things every day, donât you?â He said calmly.
Paul looked at me, a huge grin on his face.
âMedic Tessa. Itâs a pleasure meeting you again, I heard you dropped by the kitchen days ago but itâs a pity I wasnât here. We sure have missed your presence in the packâ He said bowing slightly.
I nodded curtly with a little wavering smile
âPleasure meeting you again also,â I said.
Adrian looked at me then back at Paul.
âWell, Paul. Thatâs it for today, why donât you all get some rest for the night?â He said walking out while I followed closely.
behind.
As soon as we shut the door behind us, I let out a sigh of relief.
Adrian kept striding forward, the tray in his hands.
âSeems you got more familiar with themâ I noted, increasing my pace to catch up with him,
He hummed softly and stopped abruptly.
âYes,â He said simply before walking forward again.
The rest of the walk was completed in silence thankfully and once we were at the door, I collected the tray and bowed to
him.
âThank you for your kind help. Alpha Adrian,â I said.
He said nothing and I found it rude to just walk out on him.
âIs there something you need, Alpha Adrian?â I asked.
He looked down at his feet and then up at me again.
âHow is Pamela?â He finally asked.
I nodded.
âI gave her some sedatives to rest, sheâll be fine and ready to go in the morning,â I said with a fake smile.
He blew out a deep breath.
âRight and the triplets?â He asked looking intensely at me.
My lips tightened into a thin line. He didnât deserve to know, he still had no right to inquire about my children.
âTheyâre fine,â I said curtly, refusing to elaborate further.
His face fell, a flicker of disappointment crossing his face.
âTessaâ He began, his voice low and sincere. âI know I messed up I deeply regret the way things played out between usâ¦I
..I want a second chanceâ.
His words struck a chord within me. Part of me, the foolish and still vulnerable part wanted to believe him but the other rational part of ine remembered the pain, accusations, and heartache from years ago.
âStop trying, Adrian,â I said, my voice surprisingly steady. âThereâs nothing to salvageâ,

The look of pain that flickered across his face was almost enough to shatter my resolve. Almost.
âTessa, can you ask you something?â He said in a calm tone.
I looked at him.
âWould it stop you from asking me if I said no?â
He shook his head in the negative and continued.
âWhy? Why are you pushing me away?â He asked.
I knew, he also knew but he wanted to hear the words
âSeeing you again, Adrianâ I began âis like looking at a full moon. It stirs the tide within me but I canât tell if itâs a high tide or a coming storm that means doomâ
His eyes pierced into mine and he took a step closer to me.
âTessa, standing before you again feels like breathing for the first time since I let you go. Youâre the sun that chased away the darkness in my heart, and Iâll spend every sunrise trying to earn your light back.â His voice was low and sincere. It made me have goosebumps.
I took a step back.
âGood night, Alpha Adrian,â I said before entering the med bay and leaving him outside.
Honestly, when I heard his words, I felt my cheeks turn rosy so thatâs why I had to bail before he saw it. Cringe!.
As I entered the med bay, the familiar sterile scent greeted me. Eva, Gabe, and Zed all looked up at me, their faces etched with curiosity.
âTook you long enough. Medic Tessaâ Zed quipped playfully.
I hid a smile as I dropped the tray on a table at the back. âI spilled a bit then I bumped into Alpha Adrianâ
Eva and Zed exchanged knowing glances, their lips twitching with barely controlled amusement.
âSoâ¦did anything interesting happen out there?â Eva asked, her voice laced with mischief.
I glared at her.
âWhat is it with you guys?!â I asked exasperated. âFor the goddess sake, heâs marriedâ
Eva suppressed a retch.
âThe new Luna? Oh my goodness, I could do better than that. I donât like her one bit in fact no one does, I only tolerate h because of her kidâ Eva said rolling her eyes.
That piqued my interest.
She has a child for the Alpha?â I asked
Zed shook his head while Gabe watched, his face blank.
âNo, she came to Silvermoon as a widow with her kid so heâs not the Alphaâs child but heâs the next Alphaâ Zed said taking a
of punch from the tray and drinking it.
cup
I nodded a bit disappointed, why?
Eva also took a drink and looked at me

âStill dodging my question?â She asked, a playful glint in her grey eyes.
âJust a spilled drinkâ I said. They could pry all they wanted, but I wouldnât give them the satisfaction of knowing my encounter with Adrian.
âRight,â Zed said dropping an empty cup onto the tray.
âWell, whatever it wasâ Eva chimed in. âIt seems to have brought some color back to your cheeksâ
Thatâs it!
âAll right, you two. Good night, Iâll see you early tomorrow. Leave nowâ I said.
The both of them exchanged glances and then shrugged in unison.
âAlright, alrightâ Zed conceded âWeâll leave but just remember Medic Tessa,â he paused with a wink âIf thereâs any more. spilling in the future, donât forget to call the Alpha
1 scoffed looking at me with a deadly gaze. He raised his hands in silent surrender and left with Eva,
Which left Gabe and L. He sat on his chair, his legs crossed and his gaze fixed on me.
âWhereâs Gia?â I asked leaning on the table.
âIn her chambers for the night. I gave her an early time off, she was exhaustedâ Gabe said.
I nodded.
âAny new case?â I asked. I wouldnât be surprised if there was a new patient in the 30 minutes I was gone.
Sure enough, Gabe pointed to the far end of the med bay
âAn elder, heâs stable though. According to what Eva and Zed said, the rise in cases is reducing due to the lockdown in the villageâ He said.
I nodded and cleared my throat.
âYeah, itâs certainly getting better. Isnât there like a vaccine or immunization we can give the uninfected? You know, like to prevent them from catching the plague. I mean, you drank the vaccine yourself and nothing happened to you, same vi meâ I said my arms crossed.
Gabe stared at me with a dead serious look.
âThat was me and you, not them. We have different body systems, it may work or it may kill them if it doesnât find the plague to fight against in their bodyâ Gabe said.
âOhhhhâ I drawled. That rules that out.
âI wanted to speak to you, Tessaâ Gabe said.
I sat down and placed my hands on the table
Whatâs wrong?â
He kept mute and something dawned on me.
âLet me guess, you guys heard our conversation,â I said nodding to myself.
âWeâre wolves, Tessa, we have great ears besides itâs not like you guys were whispering not to mention you were speaking right in front of the doorâ¦â

âAlright, I get it!â I said
Great. Just what I needed. My heart pounded a frantic rhythm against my ribs, and a wave of heat flushed my checks.
âDo you still like Adrian?â Gabe asked without beating about the bush.
My breath hitched.
ââ¦â I knew what I wanted to say but the words wouldnât come. Truth is, I donât know.
Taking a well-deserved breath, I looked at Gabe.
âI donât knowâ I admitted under his watchful gaze.
He relaxed, his expression unreadable.
âItâs okay if you donât. Just be careful and donât get hurt againâ He said softly.
I stood up.
âThank you, Gabe. Il go get some red carved a small room at the back of the med bay where I could sleep without
having to leave the patients alone.
He nodded and I went in.
As I collapsed onto the bed, I thought about what Gabe said. His words mirrored the anxiety I felt. Did I still like Adrian? I had come back for a reason, I was getting distracted. So far, I have learned absolutely nothing
The image of Adrianâs face filled my vision and his words echoed in my head. His apology, his request for a second chance.. was it genuine repentance or was it a carefully crafted act.
With a sigh of frustration. I pulled the thin blanket over my head shutting out the thoughts that were drowning me.
Get a hold of yourself, Tessa, you came back for answers not to make things right with
anyone!
Iâm here to expose Will and help cure the plague nothing else.
