Episode 2: The New Beginning
Briar Daniels lay sprawled across her bed, her legs dangling off the edge as she stared at the ceiling. Her thick, dark curls cascaded around her face, and her hazel eyes reflected both excitement and trepidation. The faint hum of her parentsâ voices drifted up from downstairs, but her focus was elsewhere.
Tomorrow was her first day at a new college in Florida, and the butterflies in her stomach were relentless.
âBriar! Dinnerâs ready!â her mom called from the kitchen.
Groaning, Briar rolled off the bed and stretched. She was 18 nowâan adult by most standardsâbut her parents still treated her like their little girl. Not that she minded most of the time. They were her rock, her biggest supporters, and the reason sheâd made it through the tough moments in her life.
As she bounded down the stairs, her mom, Evelyn, greeted her with a warm smile. Evelyn was a striking woman, her golden-brown skin glowing under the soft light of the dining room. Her curls were neatly pinned back, and her eyes sparkled with a mixture of love and concern.
âTook you long enough,â her dad, Victor, teased as he set the table. Tall and broad-shouldered, Victor had an air of quiet strength. He was the kind of dad who could fix anything, whether it was a broken chair or a broken heart.
Briar plopped into her chair, her mischievous grin already in place. âYouâre lucky Iâm even here. Iâm a busy woman, you know.â
Evelyn laughed, setting a bowl of pasta in front of her. âOh, Iâm sure. Whatâs on your packed schedule? Daydreaming? Annoying your parents?â
Briar gasped, placing a hand dramatically over her chest. âMom! How dare you? Iâm deeply hurt.â
Victor chuckled, sitting beside Evelyn. âYouâre impossible, kiddo. But seriously, how are you feeling about tomorrow?â
Briarâs grin faltered slightly. She twirled her fork in the pasta, her voice quieter. âNervous, I guess. New place, new people...what if they donât like me?â
Evelyn reached across the table to squeeze her hand. âTheyâre going to love you, Briar. Youâve got this fiery energy that draws people in. Just be yourself.â
Victor nodded. âAnd remember, itâs okay to take your time adjusting. Weâre just a call away if you need us.â
Briar smiled at them, her heart swelling. Her parents had always been her biggest cheerleaders, especially when things got tough. Being intersex hadnât been easy to navigate growing up, but theyâd been by her side every step of the way, reminding her she was perfect as she was.
She cleared her throat, pushing away the lump of emotion threatening to rise. âIâll be fine. Itâs just...weird, you know? Leaving behind everything familiar.â
Evelyn and Victor exchanged a glance, one of those silent parent conversations that Briar hated because she could never figure out what they were saying.
âWhat?â she asked, narrowing her eyes.
Victor sighed. âWeâve been meaning to talk to you about something, Briar. Itâs...well, itâs about who you are.â
Briar tilted her head, confused. âI know who I am. What are you talking about?â
Evelyn hesitated before saying softly, âThereâs a part of you that we havenât told you about yet. Something we thought weâd wait until you were ready to understand.â
Briarâs brows furrowed. âOkay, youâre officially freaking me out. Whatâs going on?â
Victor looked at her, his eyes filled with both love and worry. âWeâll tell you soon, sweetheart. Just...promise youâll trust us, okay?â
Briar leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms. âYouâre being super vague, and I donât like it. But fine. Whatever it is, Iâll hear you out.â
Evelyn smiled gently. âThatâs all we ask. Now, eat up. Youâll need your energy for tomorrow.â

Later That Night
Briar sat cross-legged on her bedroom floor, organizing her things for the first day of college. Her room was a colorful messâposters of her favorite bands plastered the walls, fairy lights twinkled overhead, and her desk was cluttered with books, sketches, and random trinkets.
She folded a few shirts and stuffed them into her backpack, muttering to herself. âOkay, notebooks, pens, water bottle...what else?â
Her phone buzzed, and she glanced at the screen. It was a text from her best friend, Lily, back in their old town.
Lily: You nervous about tomorrow?
Briar: Super nervous. What if theyâre all boring?
Lily: Then youâll just have to liven the place up. Youâre good at that.
Briar: True. But Iâll miss you, though.
Lily: Same here. Call me after your first day, okay?
Briar: Deal.
Smiling, Briar set her phone aside and flopped onto her bed. Despite her nervousness, a part of her was excited. She was the kind of person who thrived on new challenges, even if they scared her at first.
Still, there was a nagging feeling in the back of her mindâa sense that something was missing. She couldnât quite put her finger on it, but it was as if a piece of her life had yet to fall into place.

The Next Morning
Evelyn fussed over Briar as she adjusted her backpack straps. âDo you have everything? Did you pack snacks? What about your schedule?â
Briar rolled her eyes but smiled. âMom, Iâm not a kid. Iâve got everything.â
Victor ruffled her curls, earning a swat from Briar. âYouâll do great, kiddo. Just remember to be yourself.â
Evelyn hugged her tightly. âAnd if anyone gives you trouble, you let us know. Okay?â
Briar pulled back, her hazel eyes twinkling with mischief. âRelax, Mom. Iâll be fine. Iâll charm everyone, and theyâll all fall in love with me.â
Victor laughed. âThatâs our girl. Now go conquer the world.â
As Briar walked out the door, she glanced back at her parents, her heart swelling with love. They were her foundation, her safe haven. But as she stepped into the bright Florida sun, she couldnât shake the feeling that her journey was just beginningâand that it would change her life in ways she couldnât yet imagine.
For now, though, she was ready to face whatever the day had in store.
