Ingesting food and drinks was not a problem, since the mask had an opening for the mouth. Tea was poured into the cup sitting in front of Lavia. She had no idea where they got such high-class tea leaves.
ãI hope itâs to your liking.ãSelyse said with a smile. A faint, refreshing scent rose from the cup.
ãItâs tea leaves from Poly Elka, right? I like them.ã
ãIâm glad to hear that. Theyâve been so popular lately that itâs hard to get your hands on them.ã
ãItâs easier to procure from satellite towns and the provinces than the royal capital.ã
ãReally?! Thatâs great info.ãSelyse nodded to herself.
ãWhy are you taking it easy?!ãSelica cut in.ãA friend of that troublemaker is here!ã
It was easy to tell how others viewed Silver Face from the word âtroublemakerâ.
Sarah found Lavia even with her Stealth on. She had five points in Instinct, and the battles in this continent improved her detection skills. Sarah herself went out to buy hotdogs. The only ones in the room were Lavia, Selica, Selyse, and Sophie.
ãItâs like I can barely see you. Youâre a friend of Silver Faceâs right?ã
ãI am. Iâm Star Face. And I wasnât eavesdropping.ã
ãOh. Sorry you had to hear that.ã
ãBut itâs true that I have business with you.ãLavia took a sip of her tea. She thought it was goodâit had a slight bitterness and a soft sweetness.
ãReally? What kind of business?ã
ãThereâs a spell Iâd like Sophie to use.ã
Sophie, who had been silent since the hot dog fiasco, looked at Lavia. She had actually been watching the conversation with a smile on her face, but the eyes she had on Lavia were sharp as a knife.
ãMy magic?ãshe asked.
ãYes. We believe you can use Purification.ã
ãI can, but what about it? Are you planning to perform a ritual here?ã
Sophie looked surprised. She expected Healing magic, not Purification, a spell so rare that it was barely even used.
ãMy friend Flower Face is being ravaged by evil miasma. I wish to heal her using Purification.ã
She didnât mention Hikaru because she didnât want it to be known that Silver Face was out of commission. If Paula recovered, she could heal Hikaru.
ãMay I ask what happened exactly?ã
ãItâs nothing important, really. We were exterminating monsters when we found ourselves surrounded by thick miasma. Flower Face inhaled some.ã
ãHmm⦠We didnât see any monsters that could produce miasma.ã
ãNot around here. Much farther.ã
ãSo you ventured far away from here.ã
ãYes. We had a secret mission.ã
ãâ¦â¦â¦ã
Of course, there was no such thing as a secret mission. Lavia just didnât want to go through all the trouble explaining. She thought the Four East would buy it since they knew that Silver Face and King Doriachi were on friendly terms.
ãIâm not asking you to do it for free.ã
ãItâs fine. I donât charge for the use of my Healing magic. But Iâm not sure if Purification can heal her.ã
ãIf it doesnât work, Iâll find another way.ã
ãSo Silver Face is looking for one right now?ã
ãSomething like that. Please help us.ãLavia bowed.
ãI understand. I will save any life I can.ãSophie said.
ãAre you sure?ãSelyse whispered.
ãYes. I doubt thereâs any other Mage in this city who can use Purification. Iâm also curious about this miasma.ã
ãMe too!ãSelica was also interested, for some reason.
Selyse, Sophie, and Selica arrived at Hikaruâs residence around sunset. It would be better to treat Paula as soon as possible so they didnât wait for Sarah to return.
Meanwhileâ¦
ãWhereâs everyone?! I got five hotdogs!ã
ãHuh⦠I didnât know thereâs a house here.ãSelyse was surprised to find a spacious residence in a city as small as Dream Maker.
ãWhereâs the patient?ãSophie only had healing in mind.
Selica, however, stood unusually silent and still. She always said whatever was on her mind. No one knew she was quiet because of the Japanese-style house.
ãThis way.ã
Lavia already talked to Galixon and asked him to bring Paula to the front porch. Paula was sitting weakly when she noticed Lavia approaching.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
ãS-Sorry for making you go through so much trouble.ãPaula said.
ãNonsense. We have to help each other out.ã
ãButâ¦ã
ãHold on to me.ã
ãOkay.ã
Paula was unsteady, so Lavia sat beside her and helped her up, letting the Healer lean on her.
ãHmm⦠It looks like a normal sickness to the untrained yes. Can you heal her? Sophie?ã
Sophieâs eyes were wide open. She didnât even hear Selyse.
ãI canât believe this. Sheâs actually affected by evil miasma⦠In that case, I think Purification will work. So itâs a spell for cases like this! To literally exorcise evil.ã
ãYou can tell?ã
ãYes. I feel a sinister aura. Thereâs one more inside, isnât there?ã
Hikaru. Lavia was silent, but Sophie urged her.
ãPlease bring them here immediately. Itâs definitely better if we treat them together. Quickly.ã
ãOkay.ã
Lavia nodded to Galixon, and the man headed inside.
Lavia thought they could simply use Paulaâs magic to heal Hikaru after she recovered, but it didnât seem like Sophie would hold back in using hers at this point. If there was something that only Sophie could understand, they would be in trouble later on.
ãI see. You got hit with the miasma too.ãSelyse said as she watched Galixon support Silver Face.
ãYeah.ãthe masked boy said.ãJust a little mistake.ã
Selyse seemed to ponder about something, but didnât say any more.
ãPlease sit down quickly. Stay as close as possible.ã
ãO-Okayâ¦ã
ãKya!ãPaula blushed as Hikaru sat down close to her that their arms touched.
ãI know I reek of sweat. I hope you donât mind.ã
ãI-Itâs fine! You smell wonderful!ã
ãIâm not sure what to say about thatâ¦ãHikaru gave a strained laugh.
ãLetâs begin.ãSophie immediately focused her mind.ãOâ God who art in heaven, in thy name I ask for a miracleâã
Since the spell consumed considerable amount of mana, Sophie wanted to heal them both at once. Paulaâs guards gathered around, watching over their goddess with concern.
ãPurification.ã
Light enveloped Hikaru and Paula. A light that drove off evil and the darkness of the night.
ãPhew. Itâs done.ãSophie said.
ãI donât feel weak anymore.ãHikaru said.
ãSame here! Amazing!ãPaula added.
Color had returned to their faces.
ãGoodâ¦ã
ãSophie!ãSelyse caught her friend as she wobbled.ãI didnât know it consumed so much manaâ¦ã
ãItâs usually only used for traditional rituals. A clergyman assigned to perform it is said to have drawn the short end of the stick.ã
ãThanks a lot.ãSilver Face said.ãI donât know how to repay you.ã
ãItâs quite all right.ãSophie replied.ãI donât accept payment for my healing.ã
ãButâã
ãYou should listen to him, Sophie.ãSelyse cut in.ãI know. How about answering some questions as payment?ã
ãYeah! Letâs get some intel for payment!ãSelica agreed.
Hikaru let out a sigh. As people say, nothingâs more expensive than free. He didnât know if Selyse and Selica wanted to ask the same question. It was clear, though, that they were going to ask about matters he didnât want to divulge.
ãAll right. Iâll tell you as much as I can.ãHikaru nodded.
Lavia and Paula gave him surprised looks. Am I really that stingy and secretive? he wondered. He gave it some thought. Actually, I guess Iâm kinda secretive.
ãSelyse. You know weâve been up north, right?ã
ãStraight to the point. I like that. I wanted to ask if you inhaled the miasma from somewhere north of here.ã
ãI suppose I donât mind telling you that.ãI just have to be vague about some things, he thought.ãYou want to know what happened too, right, Galixon?ã
ãAbsolutely, Boss. Surprised you know.ã
ãFine. Iâll let you all know what happened.ãHikaru said.
The men cheered.
ãItâs late already. Letâs talk over dinner.ã
ãBoss, how about we set up tables here outside?ã
ãWas that your plan all along? You look excited.ã
As warriors, they were eager to find out what kind of adventures Hikaruâs party had. Hikaru believed they had a right to know after assigning them a dangerous task.
Hikaru took out a few gold coins.ãSomeone go buy booze.ã
ãAll right! Thatâs what Iâm talking about, Boss!ã
Three quick members of the guards took the coins and left.
ãI feel bad about leaving Sarah behind, so Iâll go back for her.ãSelyse said.ãIâd like a place for Sophie to rest.ã
ãOf course. Iâll get a chair.ãHikaru said.
ãThank you.ãSelyse said and left.
As he went to grab a chair for Sophie, Hikaru felt eyes on him.
ãHello!ãSelica whispered as she got close.ãThis looks like a Japanese-style residence. Who built it?ã
Oh, so thatâs what she wanted to ask about, Hikaru thought.ãDream Maker manages this garden mansion. You should ask them instead.ã
Selica went quiet and didnât ask any further questions.
That night, to celebrate Hikaru and Paulaâs recovery, the bodyguards stayed up late, enjoying a meal with the Four Stars of the East.
I guess Silver Faceâs time in Dream Maker is ending soon, Hikaru thought as he gazed at the stars dotting the night sky. We should go back north soon. Drakeâs parting gift should be waiting there for us.
He didnât notice Selicaâs eyes on him.
