Reunion with the Drakon
ãHmmâ¦? Ah! If it isnât Hikaru! Lavia and Paula too! What are you doing here?!ã
Drake found them as soon as they turned off their Stealth. The drakon descended, producing strong winds that disturbed the miasma below. When he was in front of Hikaruâs party, the wind blew against them, along with clouds of dust.
ãLong time no see! How have you been?!ã
ãâ¦â¦â¦ã
Spitting out the sand from his mouth, Hikaru gazed at Drake. The drakon certainly looked like him. The white fur, the look of surprise. The only difference was his size. He was now as big as the Gray Noble Drakon. The Drake that Hikaru knew was so much smaller that he could hold him in his arms.
ãWho are you?ã
ãWhat?! Thatâs so mean! Itâs me, Drake!ã
ãThe Drake I know is small. Just enough to fit in my arms. He didnât blow winds and dust at us like this.ã
ãOh, my bad. My bodyâs gotten bigger. I havenât got perfect control of my strength yet.ã
Grow big? You became gigantic. This is taking growth spurt to a whole new level. Hikaru kept his thoughts to himself. It wasnât like human common sense applied to drakons as well.
ãIs that really our little Drake?ã
ãThatâs right, Lavia! I underwent evolution back in my hometown.ã
ãEvolutionâ¦ã
ãThereâs another word Iâm not sure I know the meaning of. So whoâs the other guy?ãHikaru pointed at the other drakon. It was staring at the humans intently, studying them.
Slightly smaller than Drake, the mana stored in its body was enormous. Faint light spilled from the gaps between its purple scales, and there was profound wisdom in its watchful eyes.
ãHmm⦠Looks like some kind of big shot from your hometown, by the looks of it.ã
ãLake White Drakon. Is this the human you were talking about?ã
ãYup!ã
ãI see. This fellow killed the Gray Noble Drakon, eh?ã
Sensing enmity from the drakon, Hikaru quickly pushed Lavia aside. He then jumped back, activated his Stealth and gripped his wakizashi.
ãYes. I can see how he managed to slay the Gray Noble Drakon.ã
The drakon didnât do anything. It felt like it was about to attack. Or he already did. But nothing happened.
ãYou canât use your abilities from such an open space, can you? I was simply testing you just now.ã
ãInteresting hobby you got there.ã
ãE-Elder! What are you doing?!ã
ãLike I said, I was simply testing him.ã
Hikaru deactivated his Stealth and walked towards the girls. Everything happened too fast that they could only stand still, their mouth open.
ãYou okay?ãHikaru asked.
ãUh, yeah. I couldnât moveâ¦ã
ãThe hostile aura it emitted must have frozen you on the spot. Sorry for pushing you.ã
ãItâs fine. Itâs my fault for not being able to move.ã
Laviaâs face was pale. Right now, Hikaru deemed the elder drakon to be an enemy.
ãCome on⦠There are things you can and canât do! Judging by the situation, theyâre the ones who killed the Evil Drakon and dispelled the barrier.ã
ãNo need to shout. There are things I want to confirm too.ã
ãWhatâs this about a barrier?ã
ãHmm? Apparently the Evil Drakon put up a barrier across this continent. Not a physical one. More like it blocks perception so we wouldnât find it.ã
ãI seeâ¦ã
ãWe couldnât get here because of it.ã
Hikaru thought their timing was impeccable, arriving right after they killed the Evil Drakon. So that was the reason.
ãLetâs clean this up first before we talk.ãthe Elder said.
ãClean up?ã
ãIf left like this, monsters are bound to come here. Theyâll turn savage if they inhale the miasma, and we wouldnât want that.ã
Hikaru was right in getting rid of the miasma, after all.
ãHow are you gonna do that?ã
ãLike this.ã
The elder drakon spun around. Facing the pool of miasma, it took a deep breath and exhaled. The miasma dissipated the moment its Breathâa special kind, a mix of purple light and lightningâreached it.
ãWowâ¦ã
ãThat didnât take long at all.ã
The miasma disappeared so fast that Lavia and Paula were left flabbergasted.
ãLooks like the flying dragons sniffed us out, though.ã
More than ten figures were closing in on them.
ãLake White Dragon!ã
ãYou got it, sir!ã
Drake took off alone, rushing towards the incoming dragons.
ãDrake!ã
There was no time to stop him. Hikaruâs worries, however, were unfounded. Drake bit off the dragons one by one.
ãUh⦠was he always that violent?ãHikaru said.
ãDrake grew up to be such a fine drakon.ã
ãYou call that âfineâ?ã
The swarm of flying dragons was subdued in no time at all. There was blood all over Drakeâs mouth when he returned, but Hikaru decided not to say anything.
ãDisgusting!ã
ãYou actually tried to eat them?ã
ãLake White Drakon. Next is to the east.ã
ãYou got it, sir!ã
It was a group of Earth Dragons crawling on the ground this time. Drake killed them off one by one, with only a single blow each. There were several more attacks after that, but Drake managed all by himself.
ãAnd that is it for the miasma.ã
The elder drakon was breathing heavily. Hikaru could see that most of its mana went into its Breath.
The sun had already gone down, and it was getting dark. Even under the light of the moon, the Evil Drakonâs sinister aura remained.
ãHmm, yes. It really is dead. How did you kill it? No, never mind. It is a pointless question. Human, what do you wish to do with this corpse?ã
ãWhat do you mean? I just want it burned or something. Anything to get rid of it.ã
ãBurn? Get rid of it?ãThe elder drakonâs eyes widened, then it guffawed. ãYou are one amusing human!ã
Its laughter was so loud that they had to cover their ears.
ãI have no idea why youâre laughing.ã
ãWhy wouldnât I be laughing? It mightâve been evil, but itâs still a drakon. Donât humans want their bodies?ã
ãNot me, no.ã
ãYou can craft powerful weapons with its parts. You can also brew it to make a concoction that will prolong your life.ã
ãI said I donât want it.ã
ãWhy not? I thought humans were greedy creatures.ã
ãFor the record, Iâm no saint. But materials from a drakon that breathes miasma? No thanks. Thatâs just gross.ã
No matter how high-class a fish was, if it came out of the sludge of Tokyo Bay, he would not want to eat it.
ãBwahahahahaha!ã
Hikaru covered his ears as the elder started laughing again. Heâs an enemy, all right, he thought. Those who donât care about others are threats.
ãSo you wonât mind if we dispose of this Evil Drakonâs corpse ourselves.ã
ãI couldnât ask for anything better.ãHikaru replied.ãAnd thanks Drake. For taking care of the monsters.ã
ãWhat? Did you just thank me? Whatâs next, flying pigs?ã
You stupid drakon⦠Hikaru shot him a glare.
ãIt would seem your leaving home wasnât all that bad, Lake White Drakon.ãthe elder said.ãVery well. I and the Lake White Drakon will dispose of this corpse properly. But it will take some time and even though itâs dead, the Evil Drakonâs body still possesses an enormous amount of energy. Thereâs no telling what could happen.ã
ãDonât tell me the whole continentâs gonna explode?ã
If that happened, everything they had done would have been for naught.
ãI will make sure it doesnât release any destructive energy. But I canât imagine what effect it will cause, so itâs best to be as far away as possible. There are a few things that come to mind. Perhaps a new rare material, some kind of a metal, will appear in this world. Or maybe a crystal filled with holy energy will be produced⦠Or⦠No, the odds for that are quite low.ã
The elder drakon mumbled the rest of its words.
ãLake White Dragon, take these humans south. After that, we will dispose of the Evil Drakonâs corpse together.ã
ãYou got it, sir!ã
ãOh, youâre gonna carry us? Much appreciated.ã
ãHehehe. You guys carried me all the time, so now itâs time I return the favor.ãDrake was brimming with confidence.
ãIsnât disposing of the Evil Drakonâs corpse dangerous?ãLavia asked.
ãIâm worried too.ãPaula added.
ãIt is. But that is why the two of us will do it.ãthe elder drakon answered.ãNow go. Quick.ã
ãO-Okayâ¦ã
ãIâll be fine.ãDrake said.ãIâll eat it if anything happens.ã
The drakon grinned, baring his sharp teeth. His smile looked menacing more than anything. Thatâs Drake, all right, Hikaru thought.
It only took them a few hours to get from the northern tip of the continent to Dream Maker. Many people on lookout spotted a white figure racing through the night skies, but no one from the city knew what it really was.
ãI have to go back home once weâre done dealing with the corpse.ãDrake said as they landed in the forest a little distance away from Dream Maker.
ãReally?ã
ãOnce things settle down, you should check the place out. Iâm sure youâll find something interesting.ã
ãIs this goodbye?ãLavia asked.
ãWeâll miss you.ãPaula said.
The girls hugged Drake from both sides. He looked awkward, yet also happy.
ãIâve become a little more aware of my role as a drakonâas a Rule Maker of this world. I might not see you guys ever again, but Iâll always be watching over you.ã
Hikaru reached out to touch Drakeâs nose.ãThatâs stupid. How can you call yourself a mediator if you canât even visit those who you want to meet?ã
If it werenât for the tears welling up in Drakeâs eyes, he wouldnât have said that.
ãHehe. If you say so, we might actually see each other again sooner than expected.ã
ãI donât give a damn about the rules of your hometown.ã
ãI believe you. Youâre the kind of person whoâd slay drakons, after all.ã
Hikaruâs chest lit up a little, where his guild card was. When he looked at the card, he saw a new class.
ãDrakon Killer God: Drakon Slayerã
ãYou better not equip that class and barge into my hometown.ã
ãâ¦â¦â¦ ã
ãHey, Hikaru. You better promise me that! Donât do it, okay?!ã
ãWhat, you think Iâm some kind of a homicidal maniac?ã
Filled with sorrow and regret, Drake left Hikaru and the girls, soaring into the night sky.
