EVIE
Things were going better than I had anticipated. My brother was initially wary, especially about me staying with a guy Iâd just met, but he didnât argue or question me. He trusted my judgment, knowing I wouldnât do anything without thinking it through.
Elijahâs apprehension was about to be put to the test when he locked eyes with Noah. The moment Noah uttered my full name, I knew Elijah would be put at ease. I never, ~ever~ allowed anyone to call me by my full name.
Even my parents were restricted from using it unless I was in trouble. I had a thing against its formality. But when Noah said it, it sounded like the sweetest word in the world.
My entire plan went up in smoke the moment Molly entered the room. Somehow, I knew from her expression that my brother was her mate, even before she said it. Noah held Molly back, preventing her from lunging at Elijah, but she wasnât going down without a fight.
She struggled in Noahâs arms, desperately trying to reach my brother.
âEvie, whatâs happening?â he shouted, rising from his chair.
I quickly moved to stand beside him.
âElijah, itâs okay. Just give us a moment,â I said, moving to Noahâs side and trying to get Mollyâs attention.
âMolly! Look at me,â I commanded, my voice echoing the tone I had used with Noahâs father.
Noah looked at me, surprised.
âHeâs human,â I hissed at her, and her eyes finally focused.
âHuman?â she whispered.
âHeâs my brother,â I informed her.
She glanced at Elijah over my shoulder, then back at me.
âOh,â she mumbled.
I shot Noah a sideways glance, and he looked back at me, amusement dancing in his eyes.
âThis is ~not~ funny,â I told him.
âItâs a little funny.â He shrugged. âIâm having a sense of déjà vu.â
âWhat are we going to do?â I sighed.
âWhy donât you take Elijah upstairs and explain things to him? Iâll stay here with Molly and try to calm her down. Remember how we felt at the beginning?â Noah suggested.
I nodded in response.
âKeep that in mind when youâre talking to him. Itâs going to be okay, Evie, I promise,â he said, his voice softening as he leaned down to kiss my forehead.
I squeezed his hand before pulling Elijah out of the room. As we left, I could hear Molly whimpering.
âWhat was that about, Evie?â Elijah asked.
âLetâs go upstairs to Noah and my place. Iâll explain everything,â I told him.
Elijah followed me to the elevator.
âThereâs an elevator?â he asked, his eyes wide with surprise.
I chuckled, remembering my own reaction to the elevator just a week ago.
âCome on,â I urged, pulling him into the elevator. âNoah lives on the top floor,â I informed him, pressing the button.
âYou both live up here?â Elijah asked as we stepped out of the elevator.
I led him to my room.
âI stay in this room, and Noah has a room at the end of the hall,â I explained.
âSo, you live together, but in separate bedrooms?â Elijah asked.
I sighed.
This was only going to get more confusing.
âJust sit down, Elijah,â I instructed, guiding him toward the sitting area. âListen, things are about to get really crazy,â I admitted.
âItâs already pretty crazy, Ev. Youâre living with a guy you just met,â Elijah pointed out.
I pinched the bridge of my nose and groaned.
âYeah, thatâs not the weird part,â I muttered.
âYouâre being weird,â Elijah retorted.
I didnât even know where to start. Noah had it easy with me; Iâm open to the unusual. Elijah, however, is not. Neither are any of my brothers. Theyâre all about facts and logic.
âYou remember when I told you that Noah and I were just right for each other?â I started.
âYeahâ¦,â Elijah responded, sounding unsure.
âI meant that literally. Noah and Iâ¦we have a special kind of connection,â I said.
Elijah rolled his eyes.
âEvie, I get it. Heâs your soulmate.â Elijahâs tone was dripping with sarcasm, but he didnât realize how spot-on he was.
âExactly, Elijah. Weâre soulmates.â
Elijah stared at me as if Iâd grown an extra head. I shook my head at him, standing up. This wasnât going to work. I swung my door open.
âSawyer!â I called out, confident that my gamma bodyguard was always within earshot.
âWhatâs up, Evie?â Sawyer appeared from the sitting room.
âI need help,â I said, turning back to Elijah. âCome on, Elijah, letâs go outside.â
Elijah sighed and trailed behind me to the elevator.
âBut we just got up here,â he complained.
âI know, but this isnât something I can just explain. I need to show you,â I said.
âWhat are we doing?â Sawyer asked.
âNoah filled you in?â I asked.
Sawyer nodded.
âElijah needs to see to understand. I canât explain it in a way that heâll believe me,â I said.
Sawyerâs eyes widened, and he nodded again. âI see.â
âI donât,â Elijah grumbled.
We silently exited the back door of the pack house, stepping onto a large patio set up for outdoor activities. It was dark out, but the backyard was illuminated by string lights and lanterns hanging from the trees. Elijah and I stood on the patio while Sawyer walked out to the yard, standing under the lights.
âWhat is happening? Why is that guy getting naked?â Elijah exclaimed, covering his face as Sawyer began to undress.
âThatâs Sawyer, Noahâs best friend and my protector,â I said.
Elijah looked down at me. âWhy do you need a protector?â
âBecause Iâm Noahâs partner, a leader of this pack, and human.â I knew my words were confusing Elijah, but I decided to answer him straightforwardly.
âElijah, look.â I gestured toward the yard where a giant black wolf now stood.
Elijah yelped, jumping backward and pulling me with him.
âWhat the hell?!â He started dragging me back toward the house, but I resisted.
âElijah, stop,â I commanded, planting my feet and refusing to budge.
âEvie, what are you doing!? Itâs a wolf! You need to run,â Elijah shouted.
âYes, itâs a wolf. His name is Maze,â I said calmly.
âI donât care what its name is!â Elijah was panicking.
âElijah, look around.â
Elijahâs eyes darted around the yard and the forest. âWhereâs the guy⦠Sawyer?â
âHeâs right there.â I pointed toward Sawyerâs wolf, Maze. âHeâs not going to hurt us, I promise.â
I smiled at my brother before walking across the yard. Elijah came running after me.
âAre you crazy?â
âYeah, probably.â I shrugged, approaching the wolf.
Maze plopped down, lowering his ears and wagging his tail. I knelt down in front of him and started scratching his head.
âWhat is going on?â Elijah asked.
âItâs okay, you can touch him,â I said. I grabbed Elijahâs hand and pulled him down next to me. I placed his hand on top of Mazeâs head. Elijah was frozen, unmoving.
âEvie, youâre terrified of wolves,â Elijahâs voice was flat.
âI was, but not anymore. Now, I love them; wolves are my family,â I explained, pulling Elijah back up.
We backed away from Maze, and I nodded toward him, signaling Sawyer to come forward with a single glance.
âJust watch,â I told Elijah as Maze began to shake his giant head.
I watched Elijah carefully as Maze shifted back into Sawyer. My brotherâs mouth was hanging open, his eyes bulging out of his head.
âHeâ¦wolfâ¦manâ¦what?â Elijah stuttered.
Sawyer quickly got dressed and joined us.
âYou all right, man?â Sawyer asked, slowly approaching my brother.
Elijah opened his mouth to speak, but no sound came out.
âEli, itâs okay. Itâs a lot to take in, I know.â I grabbed my brotherâs hand and tugged at it. âI live with werewolves,â I stated.
Elijahâs eyes finally met mine.
âI donât know what to sayâ¦,â Elijah mumbled.
âNoahâs the alpha; heâs the leader of the pack. Everyone who lives in the village is a wolf,â I explained further.
âAre youâ¦safe?â Elijah questioned me.
âIâm safer than Iâve ever been,â I assured him.
âEvie is the heart of our pack,â Sawyer started, catching Elijahâs wary glance. âWhen she became Noahâs mate, she also became our luna, one of our pack leaders. The luna is even more revered than the alpha because she keeps our alpha grounded. We honor her. As the alphaâs third-in-command, her safety is my responsibility.â
I could see Elijahâs mind reeling from Sawyerâs revelation.
âSo, my twin sister, Evie, is like your leader?â Elijah queried.
Sawyer and I shared a laugh.
âSheâs more akin to our queen, to be precise,â Sawyer clarified with a shrug.
âGot it,â Elijah muttered.
âEli, Iâm still wrapping my head around all this too. It took me some time to adjust to this new reality, but I canât deny my feelings. The best way for me to understand this new world was to immerse myself in it. At some point, I had to let go of my idea of normal and just dive in.â I tried to convey my recent experiences.
âYouâve been navigating all this alone?â Elijahâs eyes softened as he turned to face me.
âNo, Iâve had Noah, Sawyer, and his sister, Molly. I have a whole family here; Iâm never alone,â I said with a smile.
âYou seem really at ease here,â he noted.
I nodded. âIâm more at ease than Iâve been in a while, and happy,â I admitted.
Elijah draped his arm over my shoulders. âThis is wild, sis.â He chuckled, starting to relax.
âIt sure is,â I agreed, resting my head on his shoulder. âAnd thereâs more,â I added.
Elijah pulled back, looking at me with skepticism.
âDid you catch when Sawyer referred to me as Noahâs mate?â I asked.
âI did,â Elijah confirmed.
âMate is essentially a synonym for soulmate, but in a very literal sense. Werewolves believe they are given a mate, someone who was created just for themâlike their other half,â I tried to explain.
âSo, Noah believes youâre his other half?â Elijah asked.
I shook my head. âItâs more than belief, Elijah. I *am* his other half and heâs mine. We know this as a fact. We share a connection thatâs notâ¦human. We can feel each otherâs emotions. Noahâs connection is even stronger than mine since heâs a wolf; itâs much more intense for him. Thatâs why I moved in. Being apart from me was physically painful for him,â I explained.
Elijah rubbed his head, trying to comprehend.
âThis is like something out of a fairytale, Ev,â he said.
âYes, it is,â I agreed.
âHow did you know you two were mates? You didnât know about any of this before him, so how did you know?â Elijah asked, pacing the patio.
Sawyer was observing us from a distance, seated on the patio furniture.
âAs a wolf, Noah could sense I was his mate, just like every wolf can. Their senses go haywire and, apparently, their mate has a unique scent to them thatâs irresistible,â I relayed what Noah had told me.
âSo, what, Noah just claimed you? Iâm not sure I like that idea,â Elijah said.
âItâs not like that. If anything, weâve claimed each other. I feel just as connected to and possessive of him as he does of me. Almost from the start, I knew I was meant to be with Noah, even when I wasnât ready to admit it to myself. Itâs an equal partnership, Elijah, not ownership,â I reassured him.
âI trust you, Evie. Youâve always been sure of yourself. I know you wouldnât do something unless you were one hundred fifty percent sure, and that doesnât happen until youâve made a pros and cons list and written a five-paragraph essay with annotated notes,â Elijah teased, nudging me with his shoulder.
I laughed, surprised at how well he was taking all this. This must have been how Noah felt when I didnât completely freak out.
âShould Noah bring Molly out?â Sawyer asked from behind us.
I studied Elijah, trying to gauge how much more he could handle.
âAll right,â I said, turning to Sawyer. I figured it was best to lay it all out there. âThereâs something else you should know,â I told Elijah.
He let out a weary sigh. âWhat now?â
âMolly is Sawyerâs sister. She was the first person I met when I got here, and sheâs my best friend. Sheâs also the girl who barged into Noahâs office earlier,â I explained.
âI remember her. She was the one having a meltdown,â Elijah recalled, nodding.
âRight, and she was having that meltdown because of you.â I kept my tone neutral.
âWhat did I do?â Elijahâs voice wavered.
âYou didnât do anything, Elijah. But you are Mollyâs mate,â I said, bracing myself for his reaction.
