Matthewâs face changed a little. The atmosphere at the room seemed to be frozen.
âIs there something else?â Eventually, Blanca gave in, for she still needed his help to meet Mr. Butler. She looked down at the hand holding her wrist.
She found Matthew had such nice hands, his fingers all white and slender. She wondered why he always liked to hold her wrists.
âAre you short of money, Blanca?â asked Matthew suddenly.
The question came as a surprise to Blanca. She froze for an instant and then she shrugged her shoulders. âWell, youâre right. I like money. I like it a lot, as much as everyone else in the world. Most people work for money, just like me. So, my dream is to make a ton of money,â said Blanca with a smile.
Matthew looked mildly surprised. Evidently, he had not expected Blanca would admit that she loved money. He had seen how people just could not wait to show their disdain for money as if it somehow showed their noble quality. More surprisingly, he thought what she said made sense.
âWhy do you like money so much?â he continued to asked.
âI love money more than the other things in the world,â Blanca replied without hesitation. Then she talked about her childhood. When she was a child, she stayed with her grandma in a slum and was always cold and hungry. Her grandma could not afford to pay her school tuition, not to mention new clothes and schoolbags. Even an ice cream seemed impossible to her.
Blanca told Matthew the story of her past calmly. When she finished, she heaved a great sigh of relief and kept her eyes fixed on Matthew. The man fell silent for a while and his brow was knitted. âLook. Since you love money so much, why donât you use my money? I have given you my bankcard,â
Matthew asked, confused. He had the advantage of being born into a rich family. So, he had never experienced financial worries before. In his mind, money could be used to buy his way out of everything in life. Especially, he had given Blanca a bankcard, for him, she didnât have to worry about money any more and just needed to obey him, like many other women.
âWhy should I spend your money? I can earn it myself. Well, I really donât want to talk about this anymore. Iâm going to go freshen up, or I will be late for work.â Blanca said decisively and left.
Mrs. Brown had made breakfast for them. Having eaten her meal quickly, Blanca hurried out of the house with Matthew. She walked behind him and didnât notice that she had stepped into the underground parking lot. When she looked at cars in front of her, she was shocked. There were so many cars here! Are they all Matthewâs?
âDo you need so many cars, Matthew?â asked Blanca in surprise. She couldnât believe what she was seeing.
âOf course,â Matthew sneered. He walked to a Porsche and stepped in. He drove to Blanca and continued, âDonât men always like cars?â
