Chapter 1799 In Evan We Trust
As Stephenâs adopted son, there did not seem to be anything wrong with him identifying himself as Nicoleâs brother.
Elias anticipated that Levant would not be so easy to persuade, but the latter being Evanâs brother-in-law was a development he did not see coming.
Given the circumstances, it would seem his plan to enlist the latterâs aid would be wholly unfeasible now.
Elias cleared his throat. âIs your sister happy being with Evan?â
âMost definitely! Havenât I already told you how close they are and how happy they are together? No one should even dream about breaking them apart!â
âNo. You donât understand your own sister. How could she be happy about having borne him five children, having to bear the excruciation of child-bearing time and time again?â
The scoffing Levant scrutinized his counterpart. âWhat sort of logic is that? Unhappy about bearing five children? Are you suggesting that barren couples who argue all day long would be much happier? Have you ever been married? Have you lived someone elseâs life? If not, who are you to pass such judgment on that of another?â
âThatâs right! Men of his sort have surely never experienced love nor been in a relationship before. Thatâs why heâs so full of it!â
Davin suddenly stood up, causing both Levant and Elias to jump.
âW-What are you doing here?â Levant exclaimed as he regarded Davin, who was standing behind the rock to his rear.
âI-I was on my way down the mountain when I overheard the commotion here. Thatâs why I came over to investigate,â Davin explained.
âHave you got the antidote?â Levant asked in a low voice when he leaned in.
Davin shook his head in the negative and whispered back, âNo!â
âWhy not?â
âItâs a long story!â Davin sighed.
âYou there. Where did you come from?â Elias demanded as he scrutinized Davin.
Davin stuck out his own chin and stared right back. âNever mind where I came from. What you said just now was simply tasteless and proves that youâre downright mental! My brother and sister-in-law are a perfect pairing â A match made in heaven. So how dare you try to plot against them! Arenât you afraid of suffering divine retribution for acting in defiance of the will of the gods?â
Brother and sister-in-law⦠Is this fellow Evanâs brother? Ha! Oneâs his own brother, and another his wifeâs. So all those who came with them are members of their own family!
âArguing with any of you over this is meaningless. With Shermaineâs charms, Iâm confident that itâll only be a matter of time before she has Evan wrapped around her fingers. Youâll see.â
âYeah, right! My brother and sister-in-lawâ¦â
Before Davin could finish, Elias became a blur. Then like a gust of wind, he instantly vanished without a trace.
âWhere is he?â Davin asked.
âHeâs gone!â
âDamn it. I wasnât even done with him yet.â
âAlright. Letâs forget about him. Why havenât you acquired the antidote?â Levant inquired.
Davin related the entire sequence of events that transpired but purposefully omitted the part pertaining to doing housekeeping for Frida and Shermaine as he found it too embarrassing to warrant mention.
Instead, he described how the duo, who had surely already caught on, intentionally made him perform the backbreaking chore of gathering firewood and his own escape upon sensing something amiss.
âWhat about Evan?â
Draven looked toward Davin. âMr. Seet entered the cave and never came back out. According to Mr. Davin, Mr. Seet should be fine since heâs much more popular with the ladies than we are.â
Levant furrowed and became deep in thought. âEvan did not return from the cave? Could he have been captured by The Four Guardians?â
âI suppose so. But weâre not sure either.â
âWere he to land in their hands, wouldnât that leave him at the mercy of those two harpies, Frida and Shermaine? Wouldnât he be completely done for?â
There was silence all around as the lot of them collectively feared the worst.
Then, Damien and Draven turned to Davin. âYouâre the one who said that Mr. Seet should be fine.â
After a slight pause, the latter replied, âYeah, thatâs what I said! Donât be such a downer, Levant. We have to trust in my brother. Never mind those two. My brother will not waver even if he were to run into Hippolyta, Cleopatra, or any other beauty you can think of. We must all have faith in him!â
