Chapter 1747 The Engagement Party
Maya frowned upon hearing Janiceâs words. Is she living with him in the Simpson residence now?
While she turned to look at Wilbur, the man cast an annoyed glance at Janice and said, âGo home first. I need to speak with Maya.â
Janice was undeterred. âIs it work-related?â she asked with a saccharine smile.
âIt is.â
âOh, thatâs wonderful! Maybe I can stay and listen too. Itâll be good prenatal education for our baby, donât you think? Your dad was just saying last night that heâs going to let our baby take over the Simpson familyâs business when they grow up. It never hurts to start the education early.â
Maya suppressed the urge to roll her eyes. Prenatal education? What a lame excuse. She obviously wants to stay around.
However, she could not help but wonder if what Janice said about Wilburâs father was true. Did Old Mr. Simpson already decide to let the child inherit the business? He sure is generous to his unborn grandchild. But thereâs a chance that the baby isnât even Wilburâs⦠Although I guess the baby is still technically a Simpson if the biological father does turn out to be Wilburâs brother⦠Does Wilbur not have any objections? Is he going to stand idly by?
In spite of her puzzlement, Maya was unwilling to voice her questions in front of Janice. I guess I should leave and come back after sheâs gone.
Just as she was going to excuse herself, Wilbur commanded Janice sternly, âI need to discuss something important with Maya, so I need you to leave now!â
For a second, Janice appeared affronted. However, the look disappeared just as quickly as it came, and she smiled in understanding.
âSure, I was just kidding about staying. Have a good chat with Ms. Maya,â she said, stopping on her way out to look at Maya. âWeâre holding our engagement party three days later. Itâd be great if you could come and witness our union, Maya.â
She sounded sincere, but Maya had a distinct feeling that Janice was establishing her dominance over Wilbur. âBack off, heâs mine,â was what she understood from her gaze.
âSure, Iâll be there,â Maya agreed readily.
âGreat! Okay, donât let me hold you two up.â Janice then told Wilbur, âIâm heading back to cook now, so remember to come home early tonight!â
Instead of waiting for his reply, she flashed him a gentle smile and left.
âYou two are living together now?â Maya asked when the door was shut.
âSheâs pregnant and needs someone to take care of her, so she moved in. Does that bother you?â
After a moment of silence, she replied, âAs I said just now, I came because I was curious about something. Anyway, I wanted to askâis Janiceâs baby yours?â
âWhat do you think? You were the one who smashed a bottle over my head because of this.â
âIâ¦â Mayaâs voice faltered. After casting a glance outside the office, she said in a muted voice, âI heard that the baby is your brotherâs. Is it true? What exactly is happening?â
Frowning, Wilbur did not answer but instead responded with a question of his own. âDo you have any proof?â
âI donât! Thatâs why Iâm here to ask you.â
âWill you believe me if I told you?â The man chuckled.
âI will if youâre telling me the truth,â she answered after giving it some thought.
âAnd how will you know if I am?â he asked, regarding her with curiosity.
That stunned her. âI⦠I can deduce it!â
âMaya, Iâm glad youâre here, but I canât tell you anything for the time being. If you really believe in me, please come to the engagement party. Youâll know everything then.â
The engagement party? Is something big going to happen there? She looked at the man in front of her, assessing. Though he appeared calm and composed as always, she could see the weariness in his eyes. Itâs as if heâs burdened by something.
It was then that she made up her mind. âAll right, Iâll be there.â
