EDMOND'S POV
(Edmond Ehizojie Thompson)
Senior year has been so hectic, the new Vice Principal added weekly tests to senior students all year plan God abeg. The school hall is packed with high school students and teachers. Technically, the school has different assembly halls for middle school and high school, mainly because of the population. I wonder where Espn is, she's always so late for assembly the Principal even talked about suspending her from her position. God forbid, I'd have to work with that mumu SS2 assistant sports prefect girl. Can someone just help me tell the girl that I'm not interested? Every small thing Senior Eddei Senior Eddei with that her fake British intonation, phony oshi.
"Ed I'm here"
I turn to see Espn already helping herself with the chair I saved for her. She really had to put on a choker necklace with her uniform, does this girl want to see Principal hit the roof or something?
"What took you so long Espn, the Principal told us this would be important" I lean slightly towards her chair so it won't be so obvious I am breaking the Principal's number one rule of maintaining decorum when being addressed by a person of higher authority.
Erling is giving a talk directed at the freshmen while the senior prefect girl and the deputies stand beside him below the podium. The Sophomore girls do not even take it easy with the way they are devouring Erling with their eyes. Wahala for who no be SP. He doesn't even make the matter any better, he's always smirking at them and winking when they make eye contact with him anytime he's passing through their block, what a Senior Prefect! This Erling looks different though, shirts properly tucked, hair combed well, tie knotted tight, navy blue blazer buttoned, he looks responsible. At least he knows how to properly deliver duties he's given
"And now I'll be handling over the mic to my colleague, the senior prefect girl" Erling says in his deep voice before smiling and taking a bow
AMANDA'S POV
(Amanda Aderinsola Akinde)
Eddy said they'd be having an assembly this morning and it was important I got there early. He's been quite helpful since I resumed, of course not as much as our dear Nana. Nana sent me the school daily dress code and the school term calendar last night without me asking. I'm beginning to get wary of how nice she's being, are people usually like this or there's something she's trying to get? Humans can never be trusted sha.
I put my white blazers on and stretch my socks up to the top of my lower leg just below my knee and lace my Doc Martens taking in my reflection as I walk past the vanity, spec lomo. I order a ride to school and arrive 4 minutes before time for assembly, even at this, I am one of the first students in the hall. I expected to see Nana already seated but I can't find her anywhere, maybe she isn't the early type. The assembly starts and I spot Eddy already seated with an empty space beside him, probably keeping it for someone.
I spot Erling and Toks with some other students I can't see too well walking towards the podium as the crowd cheer. They don't even offer the crowd as much as a nod, where have they gotten to sef. Erling starts his speech and the same moment my eyes leaves him and goes to the other side of the hall where Eddy is seated, the sports prefect girl walks over to take the space beside him. He leans close to her and it almost looks as if he's trying to peck her head until he whispers something and sits back straight. She laughs slightly but doesn't take her eyes off the speakers. She has a distinct facial feature too, I find her dimples very attractive.
"I'll be handing over to my colleague the senior prefect girl"
My eyes are now fixed on the school hall of Fame behind Eddy's shoulder. But I can't miss that voice
"Good morning Sheffield" the normally bubbly now controlled voice says
My eyes open in amazement to see Nana in front of the mic talking to the school with so much authority and confidence. She doesn't sound like the same Nana I know, I didn't know she could sound this collected God abeg! She's the SP? How has she never said this to me? Her braids are pulled back in a ponytail with two twisted strands falling in front of her face away from her eyes. Her white teeth glisten as she takes pauses between her talk to get reaction from the students. They must love her- see the way they are smiling so bright. She wore her white blazers just as both of us had planned- actually she planned for both of us then forced me to wear it- accented with her Senior Prefect badge on her breast pocket. She looks so good and formal and at the same time, like this was her zone, her queendom. I feel so jealous at this point, I can only wish I was that bold. The question now is, would I be able to bring anything smart out of my mouth? Would I be able to speak to people without stumbling on my words or making mistakes with my arithmetic as I try to spit facts?
The crowd erupts in loud cheers. I don't even notice when she finishes but I have to join in to the applauding of our enthralling SP.
The math teacher walks into class almost as soon as we walk in holding his duster and marker. A girl from my class walks in behind him holding his lesson note, textbook and extra markers for the teacher. What is it with math teachers and coming before the bell is rung?
"Sirrr you're earlier than the time keeper" one Aidan boy said, I really wonder how someone like this was picked as Deputy Senior Prefect. He is more suited for the class clown.
The teacher doesn't even budge, he gives his duster to some other student to wipe the board for him while he goes through his textbook
"We are really behind schedule" he says while writing 'mathematics' on the board
Why do all math teachers say they are behind schedule first? Like is it some Mathematics syndrome? No wonder I've never liked the darn subject
"Today we'd be continuing with matrix, I hope you all have your assignments" he says looking at everyone before his eyes fall on me
As if he read my thoughts. I did my assignments but I knew they were definitely wrong, I didn't even understand anything in the assignment. The more the numbers, the more confusing the assignment. I didn't even use the method he thought us in class, I didn't even use a method. I simply did some plus and minus that couldn't have been correct then submitted. God abeg
I clear my throat and disconnect the uncomfortable staring game with the math teacher as I look at everyone already on their seats. I sit down and fumble with my bag to bring out Math note and textbook. Maybe if I pay extra attention I'd understand the topic. I fix my gaze on the board as he writes a question on the board and starts to explain
"So the inverse of this matrix is the same as..."
Just five minutes have passed and he's completely lost me. How are these other students getting what he's saying? Do I have a brain problem? Oh God I pray he doesn't ask me any questions regarding what he's teaching
"Hey new girl what did I just say?" He points at me
I am lost for some seconds before I stand up and dust invisible dirt from my skirt. He raised his eyebrow waiting for my answer
"Um I don't remember sir" I looked down at my fingers entwined
"Come here, solve this" he hands me the marker to solve what he wrote
I slightly bump into Erling's locker as I walk forward. He mouths a little sorry as I walk to the board to disgrace myself. I hear a girl snicker as I fumble with the marker. I don't write anything, I don't have anything to write. I don't even know what the whole thing is about. The teacher just wants to embarrass me. I look at the teacher then at the class, Erling's face catches me. He's smiling! So he's the kind of person that delights himself with other people's failures? I bow my head towards the board and close my eyes
"I can't" I say almost silently
"What?" He wants me to repeat it, just for the whole class to hear my confession
"I can't" I say a little bit louder, only those in the front row could have heard me
"You can't what?" The teacher really wants me to crack
"I can't solve it" I raise my voice so the whole class hears.
They laugh, majority of them. I drop the marker and walk to my seat. Eddy gives a reassuring smile with a little puppy dog eyes that make me want to smile a bit. My eyes land on Erling, he chuckles as he looks at me then at his book playing with his pen. It's decided, I hate this stuck up dude
I sit in the cafeteria with my plate of rice and Chapman waiting for Nancy that told me to save a seat for her. Our madam likes to take her time. I start with my apple to while away time when someone attempts to drag the chair beside me to another table. Out of pure instinct, I place my palm forcefully on the seat to halt the motion giving the person a stink eye
"Toke someone is here" I say through my teeth
She drags the chair effortlessly since I used only one hand to pin it in place
"Tell the person to grab another chair" she walks away to the other table where Eddy had invited me to before. Eddy, Toke, Espn, Aidan from our class and some other guys from basketball and swim team were sitting there. I told him that I turned his offer down because I had to save a space for Nana on another table when in real life it was because I couldn't share the same breathing space as that Toke, God forbid
Nancy strolls into the dining, pauses to look for me then skips over to my direction when she finds me. I quickly pull over another chair as she gets closer
"Hey Trip, how were your classes?" She tucks a strand of hair behind my ear
"Good" I look at my food to cover up the lie. She probably notices this as she sighs
"Did something happen?" She tips my chin up a bit so I can look at her
I shake my head and start eating immediately to dismiss the topic. She is smart enough to understand that I don't want to talk about it so she stands up to go get her food
2 hrs later
"Hey new girl" I walk faster down the hallway ignoring the person calling
"Hey wait up" I quicken my pace till I'm practically running. He walks faster till he's just a step behind me
"Amanda" I stop and look at a now panting Erling
"Oh now you know my name" I cross my arms and regard him disdainfully
He puts his two palms on his knees as he catches his breath
"Wow those short legs are pretty fast" he stands straight and gives his signature smirk
I hiss and turn around leaving him in front of the school to catch a cab. How repulsive can a person be!
