Annie looked at him, puzzled.
She then saw him walking to the back door. He reached out to twist the doorknob before taking a step back.
âCover your ears,â he said.
Annie didnât understand why but still complied.
Ye Sijue cupped a hand over his mouth and coughed once. Taking a deep breath, he kicked the door with his long legs twice.
Watching the scene unfold, Annieâs eyes widened in shock. âYouâ¦â
Was he trying to break in?
T-That was illegal!
Having kicked the door a few times, Ye Sijue felt a little dizzy. He stopped, composed himself, and continued.
Annie was too shocked to stop him as he kicked the door down.
Goodness graciousâ¦
Even though the door was made of wood, it was still unbelievable that it had been knocked down with a few kicks.
She had thought that things like this only happened in movies.
Ye Sijue returned to her side and held her hand. âLetâs go in.â
Annie had always been a moral person. She felt a little uncomfortable entering a house that had been broken into. It felt like a burglary.
However, she still let herself be dragged inside.
After entering the house,
âThe family thatâs living here looks like theyâve been out for a few days,â Ye Sijue said, before coughing into a curled fist.
In this quiet space, his cough sounded very loud.
Annie heard it. A wave of heartache passed through her heart, and she knew that his illness had worsened, even though he was adamant that he was fine. He probably didnât want her to worry, but thinking about this made her heart ache even more.
She tightened her grip on his hand.
âLetâs turn on the lights first,â Ye Sijue said. He wanted to let go of her hand but she grasped it even tighter now.
Ye Sijue paused but didnât say a word. Just like that, he held her hand as he went around looking for the light switch.
He found the light switch and turned it on. The entire room was now flooded with light.
However, he turned it off in the next second.
âWhatâs wrong?â Annie asked him uncomprehendingly.
â⦠Itâs too bright. The people following us will notice it. I think weâd better use the oil lamp,â Ye Sijue explained.
Annie didnât suspect anything, but thought what he said made sense. She nodded and said, âOkay, but we donât have a lighter. Should we turn on the light to search for one first?â
âI found one already,â Ye Sijue said as he took out a lighter from a cabinet beside them.
Annie was puzzled. âHow did you find it so quickly?â
Ye Sijue smiled but didnât say anything as he flicked the lighter.
A red flame lit up instantly.
Annie was really happy that she could finally see again. She held up the oil lamp and let him light it.
Even though the oil lamp wasnât as bright as the house lights, it was better than being unable to see her fingers in the dark.
âGo close the curtains,â Ye Sijue instructed.
Annie replied without thinking, âOkay, okay!â
She then ran over to close the curtains.
Ye Sijue turned his head and looked down. He frowned at the blood on the floor.
He didnât know when he had become injured, and had not noticed that he was bleeding.
It might be because⦠his focus had only been on her.
