235 Hiring a Lawyer

The search warrant application did not go smoothly. After all, they did not have any substantial evidence to point to Dong Chang.

Wu Zheng was still reporting the case in the bureau chief’s office when Dong Chang’s lawyer arrived at the police station. When she saw them eating takeout in the office, she sneered and sat at the head of the table. She crossed her legs and said sarcastically, “What kind of efficiency is this? Since you have already confirmed that my client has nothing to do with this case, you should release him immediately!”

Zou Sheng reluctantly put down his chopsticks and tore his gaze away from the delicious food. He looked at the woman sitting in Wu Zheng’s seat and said impatiently, “Who are you? Who let you in? Is the police station a place you can enter as you please? Hurry up and leave!”

The female lawyer calmly took out her business card and placed it on the table. She raised her head proudly and said, “I’m the lawyer that Mr. Dong hired. My surname is Zhou. I’m here to get my client out of the police station.”

Zou Sheng hated lawyers who did not care about the truth. As long as someone was willing to pay them, they did not distinguish between right and wrong.

He did not even bother to look at the business card she handed him. He said angrily, “Dong Chang is still under investigation. We can’t let him go.”

“Officer, may I ask if there’s any evidence that points to my client being the culprit?” Lawyer Zhou glanced coldly at Zou Sheng and Meng Heng.

After interacting with the police for so many years, she knew very well that these two were not in charge of this case. Shen Yin, must be a beautiful but brainless police officer. She would not be of much use on a case.

Lawyer Zhou had her own private opinion of their status and she grew increasingly confident.

Shen Yin saw Zou Sheng’s pleading gaze and smiled helplessly. She took over and said, “We cannot reveal the details of the case to unauthorized personnel. You have no right to this information, nor do you need to know it. Captain Wu is in a meeting. If you really want to take Dong Chang away, please sit here and wait. When Captain Wu comes back, you can tell him personally.”

“Mr. Dong paid a lot to hire me. Why don’t I have the right to the information?” Lawyer Zhou had not expected this woman, who looked like just another a pretty face, to be so eloquent. She immediately slammed the table angrily.

“Lawyer Zhou, it’s useless for you to say such things to me. As police officers, evidence is important to us.” Shen Yin rolled her eyes and suddenly changed the topic. “However, if you can find evidence to prove that Dong Chang was indeed absent on the night of the crime, we will immediately agree to your request and let Dong Chang leave with you.”

“Alright!” Lawyer Zhou snorted coldly. She stood up and glared fiercely at Shen Yin. “Just you wait!”

With that, she walked out of the office without looking back, her high heels clicking on the ground.

Zou Sheng excitedly carried his lunch box to Shen Yin’s side and praised her. “Sister, what a brilliant move! We can’t find an alibi, so we can let this lawyer handle it. It’ll save us the trouble of making another trip.”

“Mm.” Shen Yin nodded slightly and lowered her head to stir the soup in her bowl. She said thoughtfully, “We can only try our best to stall for time now. We have to wait for the results of Captain Wu’s application. Right now, we’re competing to see which side is faster.”

“What else can we do?” Meng Heng also leaned over nervously. He had a piece of beef in his mouth and his cheeks were bulging. He looked rather cute.

Shen Yin pondered for a moment and said, “After you released Dong Chang’s mother, did she return to work at the Chengxi branch or did she go home directly?”

“She went home,” Meng Heng said with certainty. “I drove her home personally. After all, she’s one of us.”

“Mm.” Shen Yin nodded and immediately had an idea. “Then let’s take the opportunity to go to Dong Chang’s house to take a look. There might be some clues.”

“Huh? But we don’t have a search warrant!” Zou Sheng blinked in confusion. He could not keep up.

“Stupid!” Meng Heng could not help but shake his head. “Since Dong Chang’s mother is at home, as long as we say that we need to ask questions, we can naturally enter his house to take a look. We won’t need a search warrant!”

Shen Yin and Meng Heng looked at each other and shook their heads in amusement. They both sat back down. After a quick meal, they got into Team Three’s SUV together. Meng Heng drove them to the house where Dong Chang and his mother lived.
