Annaâs heart skipped a beat after hearing Karlâs words.
âWhat did you ask that?â She looked at him warily and asked.
Karl appeared to be at ease. He answered, âActually, since I am taking care of Peace at home every day, I donât know what has happened recently. I just heard that you and Wayne broke up the other day. He told me that youâre still married. Is it true, Anna?â
Anna exhaled a sigh of relief as she heard this. âThatâs right,â she replied honestly, frowning.
âBravo!â
Karl gave Anna a thumbs up, much to Annaâs amazement. He said, âAnna, youâre the only woman in this world that made Wayne become your lover willingly. Respect!â
His âcomplimentâ did not sit well with Anna. She expressed her displeasure by saying, ââThatâs so ridiculous! To tell you the truth, I married Jasper just to get a green card. That way, Tammy and I could live in the United States legally. I needed a green card, and Jasper needed the money. As a result, we made a deal.â
Karl rubbed his chin before realizing what was going on. He asked, âJasper isnât Tammyâs father, is he? So, what exactly do you mean by âa dealâ? Why didnât you tell Wayne about this, Anna?â
Anna was becoming increasingly irritated. She asked, âWhat are you talking about? Iâve already explained everything to him!
However, he doesnât believe me at all. Thereâs no need for me to explain anything else now that he thinks that way.â
Sheâd told Wayne a long time ago that she married Jasper in order to obtain a green card. Wayne, to her astonishment, assumed she was doing it for the money. As a result, she didnât think she could explain herself.
Karl was taken aback. As a bystander, he didnât think that either of them had done anything wrong. They quarreled because neither of them wanted to concede defeat. As a result, the hostility between them intensified.
Karl gave Anna a skeptical glance and replied, âTo be honest, Iâm not sure what youâre talking about. Can you tell me more about it? Iâm curious as to why your marriage is a deal.â
âOh, itâs a long story.â
Anna then began to tell him what had happened five years ago. She took Tammy to America like a fugitive just after she gave birth to her. Tammy was not an American because she was not born in the country. And Annaâs travel visa expired when they spent a little time in the United States.
Anna had just two options at the time: return to England to get a new visa, or confess to her family about her daughter. But, whatever she picked, she would have to return to her 1/3 homeland.
Anna, on the other hand, was terrified. She was scared that the man who forced her to have the babies would track her down and take her daughter away. So, she would rather stay illegally in the United States than return to England.
âI was a cleaning lady at Jasperâs company back then.â
âWhat?â Karl was taken aback. He didnât expect Anna, as a wealthy woman, would agree to work as a cleaning lady.
Anna didnât explain to him why she wanted to do this job. She continued, âJasper had just started a business and needed two million dollars. I happened to have some cash on hand at the moment. So, I went to his office and told him about it. He didnât believe me when I told him he didnât have to pay me interest and he thought I was crazy.â
Till this day, Anna could still clearly remember that scene. She walked into Jasperâs workplace wearing a brown uniform as soon as she knew he was short of cash.
âBut, in the end, I was able to persuade him to believe me. I told him that I intended to marry him in exchange for a green card and the opportunity to live in the U.S. with my daughter.â
It was difficult to convince Jasper, but Anna did it. And, he did do what he was supposed to do.
Karl went on to ask, âSo, what did you do after you were married? You two didnât live together?â
Anna answered, âWe didnât, of course. He later moved to another office with the money I gave him. There was a strait between us because he lived in the North End and I in the South End. He would come over to my place in holidays to spend time with Tammy and let her feel like she had a father.â
After knowing the truth, Karl breathed a sigh of relief in his heart for Wayne. However, he couldnât help but be concerned about him.
Wayne completely misunderstood Anna! I knew him well enough, so I knew that he must have said a lot of hurtful words to Anna out of anger! I want to see how he could make it up to Anna. I canât help him with it, so Wayne has to do it on his own. He thought to himself.
Karl looked at Anna and said, âHe didnât understand that probably because heâs the one involved in it. You see, although Iâm a bystander, I canât look at this thing from an objective perspective. Even if I try my best to remain neutral, I will still be biased somehow. Youâll forgive him, wonât you? After all, he loves you very much.â
Anna rolled her eyes at him and said, âJust say what you want to say. Karl, Iâm not in the mood to play word games with you right now.â
Karl nodded and did his best to explain, âYou didnât explain to Wayne at first that your marriage to Jasper was a sham, and that was why he misunderstood you. In any case, you and Jasper are not divorced now. So, you canât pretend that nothing has happened. I can apologize for him to you, Anna. Please, just let this go. I really hope you guys can make up.
Anna thought he had a point as she had also realized that Wayne might suspect her because she had downplayed the fact that she was still married. However, she grew enraged when she thought that Wayne would curse her and say so many hurtful words because of such a trifle.
Anna glared at Karl unhappily and asked, âHe really meant it? He would have come here himself if he meant it.â
Karl said as he felt that he could do nothing about it, âOh, please donât make it hard on him, Anna. Heâs staying in a hospital right now. Two of his ribs are broken, and he canât leave there these days. Otherwise, he would have come here and said it to you himself.â
Anna was taken aback and asked, âWhat? What happened?â
Karl pretended to look surprised and asked, âYou didnât know about that? Oh, he was hurt in a fight at a restaurant half a month ago. He was admitted to the hospital on that day, and his wounds have not recovered yet. Someone broke his bones, and itâs pretty serious. The doctor said he had to stay in the hospital for a while.â
Annaâs face immediately turned pale.
When she heard Karl say that Wayne had fought with someone else, she knew what he was talking about. She had no idea, though, that Wayne had been seriously injured that day.
âSo, he called me every day while he was in the hospital. I thought he was annoying, so I just came here and asked you what happened between you two. As far as I can tell, nothing appears to have happened.â
Karl is indeed an eloquent speaker who can make the actual fact sound like a fake, Anna thought.
âI donât think he needs to mind Jasper at all since youâre not actually a couple. You and Wayne truly love each other, so your fake husband canât stop you two from being together.â
Anna frowned and asked, âWhich hospital is he staying at?â
