Anna and Jasper sat in front of her apartmentâs floor-to-ceiling windows, listening to the rain pattering outside.
She made a cup of coffee for him and explained, âThereâs been a lot going on recently, and Iâve been really busy. So, Iâve asked someone else to take care of Tammy. If youâre available, Iâll bring her over and have dinner with you.â
âYes, Iâm available at all times,â Jasper replied. He sat on Annaâs gray couch, seeming relaxed. The glasses he wore made him look very gentle. And he looked composed and confident. Also, the way he spoke and acted was reassuring.
âYou donât have to think about having dinner with me right now, Anna. Do you believe this is the end of the story?â
âOh, now that my fatherâs dead, itâs no use for me to do anything. You and I have known each other for so long, so of course you know that once things have become final, donât want to do anything about it anymore.â Anna said wearily as she rubbed her temples.
She hadnât gotten much sleep in the past few days. She certainly suspected the reason for her fatherâs death. Anna realized, however, that she couldnât do anything about it because she didnât own a piece of his fatherâs inheritance.
If she did something, people would assume that she was purposefully causing troubles because she was displeased with the will. Anna felt that it didnât matter if she was blamed, but she didnât want Tammy to be involved and even humiliated.
âYou know, you deserve to inherit half of your fatherâs property.â âWell, Jasper, I really donât care about this.â
Jasper sighed, and then looked at Anna resignedly. He said, âI know that you donât want to get into trouble.â
âOh, yeah. I think thatâs fine. You know, I like my life a little simpler.â
Jasper asked in a meaningful tone, âBut, do you think your life is simple now? You know, the battles going on in the Wrightsâ
house are more complicated than your familyâs.â
After hearing his words, Anna froze for a moment and asked, âWhat? You know all about it?â
Jasper said calmly, âYes, everyone knows about it. I often see their names in newspapersâ financial section, along with other news. Anna, everyone knows youâre dating Wayne.â
Anna leaned her body fully on the couch and smiled, âIs that true? Was Peace the one who told you that?â
Jasper nodded.
Anna knew that Peace was always keen to share any news with Jasper. When Anna met Peace in the United States, she was already married to Jasper.
At the time, Jasperâs company was just getting through its most difficult start-up period and was slowly getting better. At the same time, Peace was pursuing a masterâs degree in design and was struggling financially. Because Jasper helped her, Peace was grateful to him. So, she was often willing to help him.
Thinking about Peace, Jasper frowned. He said, âPeace is not doing well right now. So, she should stay in a mental hospital. To be honest, I donât think Karl is capable of taking care of her well.â
âDonât worry; theyâre getting along just fine.â Anna waved her hand as if to tell Jasper that he was overthinking.
Jasper took a deep breath and said, âHe isnât always capable of caring for a person with schizophrenia, no matter how much they love each other. Karl isnât a professional caregiver, so he canât be there for her 24 hours a day. You know, he always needs to step out of his house. So, what if something bad happens to her at that time? Does he have a caregiver at home?â
Hearing his words, Anna felt less sure about this. She said, âOkay, Iâll talk to Karl about it.â
âGood. Actually, Iâve already found the best psychiatric rehabilitation center in America for Peace. If you really care about Peace, youâd better get her in there.â
Anna paused for a bit before saying, âTo be honest, I donât think Karl would agree with that.â
If Peace did go to America, they would be separated by the Atlantic Ocean and be in different time zones. So, Karl would definitely refuse to let her go.
âItâs okay. Heâll agree with that if he really wants Peace to get better.â Jasper said. He was so sensible about it that he didnât even consider the fact that this couple loved each other and didnât want to be apart.
Anna, on the other hand, could see why Jasper felt that way. He didnât know Karl, so everything he planned was based on the fact that he was concerned about Peace. Then, of course, he wouldnât care about their relationship.
They then talked for a long time, and it was completely dark when Anna walked Jasper downstairs. Lily waved goodbye to Anna as she stood under the streetlight.
Anna nodded, then wrapped her shawl tighter around her and turned around. She felt a gust of wind blowing by as she opened the door, causing her to shrink her shoulders. And then, she realized that it was getting a little cooler.
She stepped into the elevator and stared at the numbers on the screen. After a while, the elevator doors slowly opened.
Anna walked towards her house with her head down, and the sound of her pressing the code echoed in the hallway.
As she walked in the door, she smelt the strong smell of coffee.
She walked to the kitchen and tried to boil some hot water. Just as she was looking at the water in the kettle, she heard a man behind her talking to her, âWhat are you thinking?â
That voice startled her.
She gave a startled cry and covered her chest as she turned back. Anna then saw a man standing behind her.
The light of the living room cast a shadow over the manâs tall figure. Anna couldnât see his face, but she could identify him as Wayne.
Anna pressed her chest, her heart was beating wildly. And she said, âOh my God! You scared the hell out of me! When did you get back? Werenât you in Seriel City yesterday?â
Wayne said with a poker face, âOh, that project is done. I got back as soon as I heard what happened to your father.â
It had rained heavily in Seriel City for the last few days, and flights there were all delayed. Also, the roads were closed because there were many car accidents happened on the highway. So, there were no flights until that morning.
Anna still hadnât recovered from the shock, and her hands were still shaking. She held onto the marble table and couldnât stop gasping for air. She said, âHey, you really scared the hell out of me. You should have told me in advance! If Iâd known youâd sneak into my house, I wouldnât have told you my code! I really regret it.â
She was actually just whining when she said that. However, she didnât expect Wayne to take her the wrong way.
âThatâs not the only thing you regret, is it?â Wayne said. Then, he took a step closer to Anna. There were water dripped on the floor and muddy stains.
Anna then realized that he was soaked through. She asked, âDid you get caught in the rain? Oh, whereâs Gabe?â
Wayne acted like he hadnât heard what she said. He stared sorrowfully at Anna, who was separated from him by the marble table, and then asked in a cold voice, âWhere is that man? Has he left?â
He couldnât believe that Anna could talk to him at this time as if nothing had happened. He also couldnât imagine that she could seem so frank after spending hours in this house with another man.
Wayneâs question caused Annaâs heart to skip a beat. She immediately blurted out, âHuh? What man?â
She had guessed by then that Wayne might have seen Jasper.
âAre you serious?â Wayne found it ridiculous as he asked. He gazed at her indifferently and contemptuously. He stared at Anna and seemed extremely disappointed in her.
âArenât you going to tell me anything about the man? You wouldnât tell me if I didnât ask you, would you?â
âJasper and I are just friends. Wayne, you misunderstood me.â Anna finally knew why
