How could they tolerate something like this? Ning Xiaoyao wanted to fight Lou Zigui, but he simply picked her up until her feet were off the ground.
âXiaoyao,â he said softly, âIf you take née Qin out of the Grand Preceptorâs estate, Xie Wenyuan will send assassins after Qin Xuan right afterwards.â
âWhaa?â Ning Xiaoyao exclaimed. âThen Iâll kill off that old geezer first!â
Because it was the middle of the night, Ning Xiaoyaoâs shout brought the Dragon Guards and Fang Tang with his men all running.
âItâs fine,â Lou Zigui told the crowd. âYou can all withdraw.â
âRob and plunder his house, mmph--â Ning Xiaoyaoâs lips were muffled by Supreme Commander Louâs hand once again.
âBe good,â Supreme Commander Lou said as he carried off Ning Xiaoyao. Fang Tang stared at his Supreme Commanderâs retreating form, then at His Majestyâs legs kicking in the air.
âSupreme Commander looks like heâs raising a son,â young General Fang sighed with feeling. The general standing next to him smacked him upside the head. This guy, he never thinks before he speaks! What kind of subject treats the emperor as their son? Does he want to condemn Supreme Commander to death!?
âIâm only joking,â Fang Tang rubbed at his aching head with a brilliant smile. âSupreme Commanderâs age doesnât match with His Majesty, right?â His Supreme Commander wasnât old enough to have a child as old as His Majesty yet.
â........â said everyone else. This guy is really a dimwit. No wonder he was a âheroâ bold enough to charge into the palace and cause His Majesty to faint away.
At the end of the covered walkway, Ning Xiaoyao was making an uproar. âIf you donât let go of me, Iâll bite you!â
Lou Zigui sat with Ning Xiaoyao on a banister and said, âDo you want to force the Xie Clan to raise their troops and revolt?â
âThey can revolt all they like,â Ning Xiaoyao snarled, âIâm not afraid!â Sheâd risked her life in fights against zombies before, so what was an old man and his rebellion?
âRemember, once war starts, many people will die,â Lou Zigui held onto Ning Xiaoyao without letting go. âSuppose the Northern Hu take that chance to invade while Yongningâs fighting amongst itself? Xiaoyao, even though you want to help née Qin and Qin Xuan, you have to make sure they can live first, right?â
â........â said Ning Xiaoyao. She couldnât do as she liked anymore!
âEndure it for one more night,â Lou Zigui said, âOnce Qin Xuanâs safety is assured, we can bring out née Qin.â
Ning Xiaoyao sat huffily on Lou Ziguiâs legs before she finally said, âYou said it yourself, just one more night. No matter what I do tomorrow, youâre not allowed to stop me.â
âAlright,â Lou Zigui agreed. Winning Qin Xuan over to their side would mean breaking off the Xie Clanâs path to riches in Jiangnan. Why would he stop her for that?
âFirst itâs Qin Xuan here, then Qin Xuan there,â Ning Xiaoyao tilted her head to look at Lou Zigui. âWhy do I feel like you think General Qinâs more important than Miss AâXin?â
If it was up to Lou Zigui to choose, Qin Xuan would always be more important than Qin Xin. Even if Qin Xin couldnât survive the night and died in the Grand Preceptorâs estate, the commander of the Jiangnan navy would still be Qin Xuan. In terms of importance, was there any other choice? Despite thinking this way, Lou Zigui didnât voice his thoughts aloud. Neither did his expression reveal anything. He simply whispered in Ning Xiaoyaoâs ear, âTheyâre both important.â
Ning Xiaoyao rubbed her ears because Supreme Commander Louâs breathing had made her ticklish.
âIf you have née Qin annul her relationship, youâll be violating the late emperorâs decree,â Lou Zigui added. âXiaoyao, have you really thought this over?â
Ning Xiaoyao didnât know what words she could use to describe the late emperor now. Really, was Grand Preceptor Xie your true love all along? You even gave out such a perverse imperial decree? Oh wait, thatâs not right. Ning Xiaoyao felt stifled as she recalled that the mistress of the empress dowagerâs palace was the real true love of the late emperor.
âHe was completely blind!â Ning Xiaoyao cursed.
âThe late emperor was deceived by the Xie father and daughter as well,â Lou Zigui said.
âHeheh,â Ning Xiaoyao chuckled.
âYouâve really thought it over?â Lou Zigui asked again.
Ning Xiaoyao stood up and straightened her back. âMy Imperial Father sent me a dream tonight saying that Xie Anyi was a no good rascal, and to rescue Miss AâXin. Anyone who doesnât believe me can ask my Imperial Father personally. Iâll even send them on their way.â
â........â said Lou Zigui. He had no way to counter her words.
âIâm going to see the empress,â Ning Xiaoyao said. âIf thereâs nothing else, you should go rest, Supreme Commander.â
âWhat are you seeing the empress for?â Lou Zigui asked.
âDo I need a reason to visit my wife?â Ning Xiaoyao arched an eyebrow towards Lou Zigui, who wanted to heheh as well.
âIâm off,â Ning Xiaoyao stuffed a sugar bean in Lou Ziguiâs mouth before she turned and ran away.
Sweetness filled his mouth as Lou Zigui touched the place on his lips where Ning Xiaoyaoâs finger had brushed against. He couldnât describe his feelings at this moment. When Fang Tang hurried over, he gave a start at the grin on Lou Ziguiâs face. What was wrong with his Supreme Commander? Why...why does he have such a, urk, gentle-looking smile?
âWhat is it?â At the sight of Fang Tang, Lou Ziguiâs upturned lips returned to its usual line.
âThereâs news from the Hall of Punishment,â Fang Tang said in a rush. âThat Northern Hu woman wanted to go to sleep and no one can shout her awake.â
âIf shouting doesnât work, use torture,â Lou Zigui said. âCanât the torturers find ways to keep a person awake?â
âThen, then should I make a trip?â Fang Tang asked. When Lou Zigui nodded, Fang Tang turned and ran off. Lou Zigui sat on the banisters and stared at the night sky for awhile before rising to trace Ning Xiaoyaoâs footsteps.
In the palace, Ning Xiaoyao took her hand off Empress Zhouâs shoulder after determining that her baby was growing very well. She quietly nodded her head and said, âHave a seat.â
Empress Zhou was feeling too uneasy. Sheâd been called over to Supreme Splendor Hall in the middle of the night. âDid Your Majesty summon this empress for anything in particular?â
Ning Xiaoyao could tell that Empress Zhou was nervous, so she patted her shoulder to comfort her. When she saw that only made the empress more anxious, she spoke up. âThat there,â Ning Xiaoyao awkwardly removed her hands. âTomorrow, you should summon all the wives of the various subjects into the palace. Have their husbands accompany them.â
Empress Zhou felt conflicted. I thought I was going to die, and here you are telling me these kinds of things.
âYou should especially invite those from the Xie Clan,â Ning Xiaoyao added. âYou have to have them come.â
Empress Zhou gave a start at the mention of the Xie Clan. She lowered her voice and asked, âWhat Your Majesty means is that all of the Xie Clanâs young masters and wives should be summoned into the palace?â
âMm. Doesnât the Grand Preceptor have three sons?â Ning Xiaoyao asked.
Weâre only inviting the first wives. Empress Zhou suddenly realized what was going on.
âAs for the other important subjects, you be the judge,â Ning Xiaoyao added. âThe more, the better.â
âWhat is Your Majesty planning to do upon inviting them to the palace?â Empress Zhou asked.
âScrew over a jerk,â Ning Xiaoyao explained tersely.
â........â said Empress Zhou. Though she had no idea what the words meant, they sounded pretty impressive.
âOh, right. If we put it that way, none of the Xie Clan will dare to enter the palace,â Ning Xiaoyao twirled in place. âHow about we say itâs my birthday?â
The empressâs expression was a little stiff as she spoke. âYour birthday is on the second day of the first month of a Lunar new year. Right now, itâs the fourth month.â
Alright, that excuse wonât work. Ning Xiaoyao looked towards the empress.
As if reading her mind, Empress Zhou replied, âItâs not my birthday tomorrow either, nor is it Esteemed Empress Dowagerâs birthday.â
âWho wants to celebrate her birthday?â Ning Xiaoyao whispered under her breath.
Empress Zhou simply pretended not to hear a thing.
âThen let's just say I got something delicious so Iâm treating them to a meal,â Ning Xiaoyao thought up another excuse. (Author: Your mind only revolves around topics like these. o(â¯â¡â°)o) Empress Zhou accepted the excuse. Then again, what could she ever say to oppose the emperor?
Lou Zigui saw the empress leaving the side palace by the time he went in. The first thing he heard was Ning Xiaoyaoâs voice.
âThird Rain, invite Miss Ji into the palace.â
âRight this instant?â Shadowrain asked.
âYeah,â Ning Xiaoyao nodded.
Shadowrain wanted to say, Your Majesty, if you invite Miss Ji to the palace in the middle of the night, will anyone still marry her in the future?
âGo on,â Lou Zigui told the irresolute Shadowrain as he walked in.
Shadowrain didnât know why, but he feared Lou Zigui where he didnât fear Ning Xiaoyao. After hearing those words, he left without saying a thing to summon Ji Yuerong to the palace.
âIâve thought it over,â Ning Xiaoyao said as she stuffed more sugar beans into her mouth. âWhat Iâm going to do tomorrow.â
Lou Zigui sat down to listen to Ning Xiaoyaoâs plan. In the flower beds outside, elder cousin magpie remarked to Wifey Magpie, âXiaoyaoâs pretty fierce.â
âHow could she be an emperor if she wasnât fierce?â Wifey Magpie asked reasonably.
âThatâs right,â Big Boss Black piped in. âThis cat would rather Xiaoyao bully others than to see others bully her, miaow!â
âWhat is née Qinâs location in the Grand Preceptorâs estate?â Lou Zigui asked.
Ning Xiaoyao said, âIâll have elder cousin magpie bring Yuerong there.â
âWho?â Lou Zigui asked.
âHim,â Ning Xiaoyao said, pointing towards the flower beds.
︿( ̄︶ ̄)︿ , went elder cousin magpie.
Lou Zigui fell silent. âDid Your Majesty raise him?â Next to the magpie was that fat black cat. It was the first time Supreme Commander Lou had ever see a magpie and cat so close together.
âUrk, yeah,â Ning Xiaoyao nodded.
Lou Zigui rested a hand against his forehead. âKeep going.â
âCongratulations on becoming an imperial bird,â all of the little animals in and out of the flowerbeds told elder cousin magpie.
â.........â went elder cousin magpie.
One hour later, Ji Yuerong entered the palace along with her worried grandfather, Ji Jiu.
âCome, come, come,â Ning Xiaoyao beckoned to the pair. âWeâre going to have a meeting.â
The meeting took an entire night, with more members joining in as it progressed. Finally, even a few generals from the imperial guards were called in to participate. By the time Ning Xiaoyao looked towards the brightening skies outside the windows, her tone had turned more solemn.
âNow Iâm announcing the start of our plan. Our goals are to screw over that jerk and fulfill true love. Anyone else has anything to add?â
â........â said the group. What evil-sounding words. What else can we add? Itâs impossible to follow up after that.
âNothing else,â Lou Zigui replied in answer to Ning Xiaoyaoâs stare.
âThen letâs move out,â Ning Xiaoyao made a big wave with her hands. The group scattered to busy themselves with their various tasks.
--
After receiving Empress Zhouâs orders, the eunuchs carrying invitations to the palace were the first to leave its gates with their deliveries. Ji Yuerong brought a team of Dragon Guards with her to depart Supreme Splendor Hall. On her way to Grand Preceptor Xieâs estate to save her big sister Qin, she asked Ning Xiaoyao, âYour Majesty, suppose Xie Anyi tries to take my big sister Qin to the palace?â If thatâs the case, wonât I run there in vain?
Ning Xiaoyao had no doubts. âHe wonât.â
His Majesty Ning could guarantee it on her character and moral integrity. Xie Anyi, that jerk. He. Definitely. Wouldnât!
