The New Years party was a big occasion at Nevermore Academy, this year it was called- 'The Midnight Express'. Wednesday wasn't fond in the slightest.
After the events of the last party she attended, hosted by Nevermore, she was somewhat put off. Worse yet, the rumours told that this event would be bigger and brighter than the last. Just the thought of more bright lights and offensive colours made her skin break out in rashes. Worse yet, there were going to be fireworks- bright, obnoxious, colourful fireworks.
She could only hope that something drastic would happen at this one- like maybe a student gets crushed by one of the oversized statues, or perhaps one of the teachers get beheaded by a light fixture gone wrong. But she doubted it. For a while, she pondered running the event herself, maybe putting bleach in the punch- that was until Y/N asked her to go with him.
Wednesday and Y/N had been 'friends' for a while, although friends was not a term often used with any of the Addams family. While the pair weren't at a stage where they comfortably sat in silence together, they certainly had a strong connection with one another.
For months, Y/N had been dropping hints to Wednesday about his feelings for her. He was fairly certain that he loved her- like seriously, utterly, completely, wholly loved her. In fact, it wasn't in doubt at all. Whenever he closed his eyes to sleep he saw her. Even when he was doing schoolwork or hanging out with friends, all he could think about was her- her and her pretty features, and her smart remarks, and her cold dead eyes.
With the amount of hints he had dropped, he was beginning to lose hope. He wasn't sure if he could just tell her directly. But, The Midnight Express gave him an opportunity. All he had to do was ask her to go with her, which he did.
At 11pm on the dot, Y/N showed up outside Wednesday and Enid's room, dressed in an all black tuxedo and a Rafflesia Arnoldii (or a corpse flower as it is formally known). He straightened his jacket collar and brushed off a few specks of dust, before knocking on the heavy wooden door.
It didn't take long for the heft door to pull open, one Wednesday Addams standing on the other side. She wore a dress that held tight around her waist and arms with a white spouted collar which was embroidery with black roses. The skirt was a little more loose and was heavily pleated. What the skirt didn't cover her legs was instead covered by black tights and her feet were sat in a chunky set of heels.
For a moment, Y/N believed that she had removed his lungs from behind his ribs because he found it impossible to breathe. "Woah..." He breathed with widened eyes. "You look beautiful." He quickly told her, a smile pulling the corners of his lips.
She raised a brow as she scanned over his attire. "You look fine." She replied plainly. She really wished she could tell him what she really thought- she thought he looked dashing, handsome even.
He pursed his lips together and nodded. "Right..." He murmured, almost disappointingly. "Are you ready to go?" He asked, shaking away his previous disposition, replacing it with a more hopeful one.
"Yes." She answered simply, stepping out of the doorway and closing it behind her.
"Great!" He responded with a smile. He offered her his arm to link with, to which she seemingly ignored, opting to walk ahead.
He sighed and jogged a few paces to catch up to her. They walked side by side in complete silence until they reached the hall.
The hall itself was spangled in tinsel and balloons as well as an overbearing number of lighting equipment. Already the music was in full swing. Wednesday wanted to stab steak knives down her ears. Her generation were so uncultured. They were very well late for the event, most students showing up at 6pm- Wednesday had insisted that she would not be able to bear a full 6 hours of cringe worthy pop and happy peers.
"Do you want to take a seat? I'll get us some drinks." He offered. She simply replied with a nod before sitting at an empty table. She folded her arms over her torso as she observed those who conversed and danced around the hall. It made her sick.
She sighed. This was a big moment for her and she felt like she was fighting against the grain. She liked Y/N, she thought she had made that much obvious to him. She'd tried to be kind and considerate towards him. Unlike most, she didn't just brush him off or ignore him. She made time for him and she was starting to get annoyed that she was making advances on him. Wednesday had developed quite the possession over Y/N. Her blood boiled when he was talking to people who weren't her. It made her skin crawl when others would talk about him. Wednesday wanted Y/N all to herself.
Ten minutes passed. Then thirty. Then forty-five. Y/N hadn't returned. She was getting fed up. She stood up and approached the dance floor. The sea of bodies were like a school of phirana fish, just waiting to eat her alive. She clenched her fists and strode in at the first available opening. She dodged and weaved the twirls and kicks of people dancing with surprising skill. She made it out unscathed to the opposite side of the hall. She took a moment to catch her breath before she scanned the room- and a small, dimly lit corner, she found Y/N sat beside another girl. They were laughing together. She seemed to be crying from laughter.
Her lip twitched as her jaw clenched. Her fists balled up tighter until her knuckles bore white bone. Her chest ganwed with pain as her cold heart sank. 'Is this what jealousy feels like?' she asked herself. She didn't like it. She felt sick- like a million worms and lice had infested her stomach.
Their eyes connected. He stopped laughing.
A tannoy sounded, filled with static.
"-The fireworks will be set off in five minutes! That's five minutes! Make your way outside-."
Many students seemed to cheer. Wednesday wasn't in the mood for cheering. She turned to disappear into the flock of students heading outside.
"Wednesday, wait!" Y/N called out, jumping out of his chair. It was too late, she had already dissolved into the many hungry phiranas. He groaned as he followed everyone out. This wasn't how he planned the night to go.
He bobbed and weaved through the many bodies in an attempt to find the raven haired girl but to no success. He took a deep breath before shouting out at the top of his lungs, "Wednesday!"
The chatter amongst the crowd fell silent. All of their eyes fell to him. He shifted uncomfortably on his feet as he watched the many confused faces of his surrounding peers. Slowly, the sea of bodies parted, leaving Wednesday exposed and once again, glaring right at him. His heart panged as he considered just abandoning the night as a whole. She had misunderstood the situation- she only had half the story and he was willing to bed that she would be more than happy to gut him alive right about now. He stepped through the man-made crowd towards the short girl.
Hawk-like eyes watched him as he approached. He stopped a few feet in front of her."Wednesday, I-"
"Don't bother." She spoke coldly, her normal monotone voice laced with black poison that made his chest tight. "I will slit your throat and use your windpipe as a plant pot." She threatened.
Chatter followed about her threat. He swallowed hard as his throat became sore at the thought of her imaginative threat. "You don't understand." He quickly replied, taking another slow step forward. "I just saw her there... Crying." He told Wednesday. "The girl I was sat with- her boyfriend broke up with her... I just wanted to cheer her up."
Wednesday cocked her head. Perhaps jealousy had clouded her vision. Still, she was pretty angry that he just up and left her for close to an hour. "Give me one good reason why I shouldn't toss you down the nearest cliff." She demanded, closing the gap between them.
He took a few shaky breaths as he tried to shut out all of the burning eyes. This was his chance. His chance to tell her how he really felt about her. The tannoy sounded once more. "-Just ten seconds before midnight-!"
His breathing quickened. "Because... Because I love you, Wends'." He choked out as he took her arctic hands within his own. She let him. "I mean it."
"-Five, four, three, two, one-!" the tannoy rang.
Wednesday perched on the very tips of her toes and pressed her lips into his in a rare moment of tender affection. At if on queue, the fireworks began to shoot out in the distance. Many students cheered, but the cheers weren't for the fireworks- but rather the budding couple they surrounded. She realised how cliché the scene was but she didn't care. He wrapped an arm around her waist as he broke the kiss.
"I am sorry, Y/N..." Wednesday trailed off as a guilty look spread her features.
He placed a kiss on her forehead as he smiled. "Don't be." He murmured back.
The pair turned to watch the fireworks show, each holding onto the other like there would be no tomorrow. For the first time in her life, Wednesday felt warm and it was in Y/N's embrace. All the painful music, blinding lights and annoying fireworks were all worth the torment. She crept up and placed a kiss on his cheek. "Just so we're clear, I love you too." She murmured into his ear before settling back into his side.
