Y/N stood outside of Wednesday's dorm room door- he had been there for five minutes already, just watching the hands on his watch slowly etch ever closer to midday. It didn't seem to matter how long he stood there for, those tiny hands couldn't push time fast enough.
The silence was loud, but not as loud as the anxieties running rampant through his mind. This would be their first valentine's day together- their first big occasion together. In fairness, they had only been dating for a little over a month. Wednesday had been playing it nonchalantly, stating that she didn't care much for valentine's day and it's insufferable perks- but it meant a lot to Y/N.
He had been brought up in such a way that he was taught to make the lady in the relationship feel special- like they were the only thing that mattered, even if it only lasted for one day. He felt it was his job, his duty to make sure Wednesday understood his passion for her- and he was scared. Oh both Wednesday and of disappointing her.
In his hand he held a bouquet of roses- thirteen roses to be precise. Y/N had also prepared two gifts for her which resided in his car for the time being. He was worried she would hate his gifts- Wednesday had told him not to get her anything, but thanks to Thing- he discovered that she had brought him a gift so he had to return the act. His hair was neat, his shoes freshly cleaned and his clothes without marks or creases. He had brushed his teeth more times than he could count to make sure he didn't repulse her with bad breath and he had put on a healthy spritz of cologne.
The hands on his watch finally clasped upright together as the time turned to noon. His hand followed his gaze on her door and balled up before he gently knocked in a rhythmic pattern. He heard a few moments of shuffling before the door slowly swung open.
Y/N smiled at Wednesday as he caught sight of her figure in the doorway- it seemed that whenever their eyes met, he would loose all ability to function properly for a few seconds.
"Happy valentine's day." Y/N spoke, breaking the long silence he had been cocooned within. He held out the bundle of roses.
Wednesday took the roses and a slight smirk came to her often sly lips. She brought them up to her nose and breathed in. Fresh- she preferred the rotting-wilted scent but it was still a sweet gesture. "Thank you." She responded before taking a few steps back into her room to place the bouquet on her bed. This was her first time not spending valentine's day alone and she would be the first to admit that it felt odd. For so many years she had lived in a fortress of solitude- berating those who dared show their affection for one another so publicly- and then Y/N came along. She couldn't complain though. While she was still in the depths of her room, she grabbed a small box of her own which she slotted into her deep jacket pocket.
Y/N appeared to take a shaky breath before holding out his hand to her when she returned to the open door. Wednesday hesitated, looking between his hand and his shifting eyes. "Where are we going?" She asked quietly. She had believed that the two would be spending the day quietly together in her dorm- it was the exact reason she had gently manipulated Enid into taking Ajax out for the day- so she and Y/N could be alone.
He cleared the frog in his throat. "It's a surprise." He told her, his voice anxious. Wednesday seemed to narrow her eyes down on him, her brows lowered too. This was exactly what he had been fearing- she was unsure.
He could see the cogs in her brain ticking as she weighed up her options. "I've told you I don't like surprises." She took his hand. Y/N took some solace in her willingness.
"I'll need to drive us there." He told her while she closed her door behind her- still holding his hand. His thumb gently ran over the knuckle of her thumb. He got a chance to really gawk at her while she was turned away- still in her monochromatic pallet, she always found a way to stand out.
She turned to him once the door was closed with a confused look. "I didn't know you could drive." Wednesday spoke.
Y/N hummed in response and nodded his head. "I passed my test a few months back." He responded as the two set off walking through the maze of hallways and corridors.
"Alright." She nodded her head too. "Is it far?" She questioned as the pair made their way to the staircase- each step they took down was done in synch and without their hands breaking apart.
"No, not too far." He answered. The two remained silent for the rest of the journey to the academy car park and his car- an old beaten up vehicle but it was otherwise we'll kept. No signs or rust or cracks in the windows. The interior was pristine- just a few dints and scratched on the side of the car. He opened the door for her to get in, which she did. He closed the door behind her before heading around to the other side and seating himself at the steering wheel. Putting the key in the ignition, he turned it. It chugged and clunked a few times- but eventually it purred to life. They were both glad to be out of the gentle chill- it wasn't too cold but it was enough to bring numbness to the fingers.
"I'm surprised you never tried to just drive away in this thing." Wednesday mused as she buckled up her seatbelt.
"What do you mean?" Y/N asked as he pulled out of his parking space- turning to head towards the large Nevermore gates.
"If I had a car I would have driven right out of here and not come back." She looked out of the window as countless students passed by. They were given the day off- due to so many students being in relationships, it gave everyone a chance to spend some time with their lovers- but not everyone was so lucky to do so. Many were alone. Wednesday almost envied them.
Y/N's brow raised a small bit as he passed through the gates. "I had my gaze set elsewhere." He answered after a few brief moments of silence.
"Where?"
"On you." He answered after a moments hesitation. Wednesday never responded further. Y/N reached over her and popped open the glovebox before pulling out a CD. He handed the case over to his lover and she responded by opening it and sliding the CD into the slot. Some classical music started playing- something Y/N hoped Wednesday would like. His eyes would dart between the road and her features to see if she took any liking to the CD he had purchased for her- but as was to be expected, her face stood as pale and cold as ever. The journey continued in silence for the remainder of the journey- perhaps around fourty minutes.
Y/N pulled up on the side of a desolate road- one that was covered by more dirt and moss than asphalt. He cut off the engine and the music stopped too. "We're here." He told her quietly.
Wednesday looked out of the window to her right and raised a brow. There stood a wall of red maple and bitternut trees- bare branches exposed, all strong and broad. It was a curious location for a valentine's date- even she knew as such. Perhaps it was a more suiting location for a murder. "Are you planning on killing me and leaving my body here?" She deadpanned as one of her hands moved to unbuckle her seatbelt, the other to open the door.
"You wouldn't be so lucky." He joked back, catching onto her sarcastic tone. He got out of the car and Wednesday did the same. While she looked around at their surroundings, he grabbed his rucksack and two boxes off of the back seat which he carried under his arm. While one of the boxes were neatly wrapped in black and silver paper- the other was a plain brown cardboard box with a number of small punctures punched into it. He shifted a strap of his bag onto one of his shoulders. "We need to head through that way." He pointed out to a small pathway where the bleak shrubbery and unkept grasses were thin and eroded. "I think."
Wednesday hummed and nodded, moving beside him. She followed his lead, trusting him enough to know the way- it wasn't like she could direct them when she had no idea where they were supposed to be heading towards. The two made their way through the green surrounding and it took no longer than two or three minuets to find the other side. With a satisfied and relieved look on his face, he gazed upon the field for a moment. It was certainly nothing special- Wednesday guessed it was just some farmer's field that Y/N had found. While she wasn't exactly impressed, she wasn't disappointed- she would much rather spend her day in a field with Y/N than in a bustling restaurant. Y/N looked over towards a tree that sat relatively central to the fenced off field before he started heading towards it. With it being the month of February, it was still too cold for the leaves on the tree to bloom and for any weeds and flowers to blossom. The only real colour in the surrounding that stood out was that of the grass which still remained vivid.
Y/N stopped at the tree where he planted down his rucksack against the trunk and ground. He turned to see Wednesday a few paces behind, gazing over at the other surrounding fields that held evergreen crops such as broccoli and parsnips. He set the two gifts down on the ground besides his bag which he then proceeded to unzip. Out of the bag he pulled a number of things- A few plastic containers which appeared to hold a number of fresh green and red ingredients, a bottle containing a thick olive oil, a large head of garlic, two sealed shakers which contained two types of powder (one a deep amber, the other a dirt brown), and then a bag that was tightly tied and contained chickpeas. He also pulled out a small foldable gas hob as well as a miniature gas bottle. He then followed by grabbing a shallow pan and a picnic blanket. Finally he pulled out a pack of tall taper candles. His bag was quite literally packed to the brim. He had talked to Morticia about what he could make for Wednesday and she had informed him that espinacas con garbanzos would be the perfect meal for his plan- a winter dish originating from their homeland and one that could warm the heart on the coldest of days- not to mention it was one of Wednesday's favourites. For the last three days Y/N had been revising his notes on how to make the dish- he wanted to make sure he got it perfect and down to every small instruction that Morticia gave him.
When he turned away from the tree, he found the small figure stalking behind him. He gave a small jump before laughing to himself. "What is this?" Wednesday questioned- observing all of the ingredients which had now been moved onto the picnic blanket.
Y/N didn't answer at first- instead he sat down on the blanket and set up the camping gas hob and lit it with a small snap of his fingers. He patted the spot beside him and she tilted her head as she observed him- watching as he concentrated on making sure the flames didn't grow too big. Of course- she could tell that he was going to attempt cooking something- the key word being attempt. "I'm cooking you a meal."
"Yeah- I can see that." She stated plainly, sitting on the backs of her legs as she knelt down. Her hands remained on her thighs as she continued to watch him and his evenly weighted actions- adding oil to the pan which he had placed over the flames. "but what are you cooking?" She pushed further.
"It's another surprise." He pushed back, dropping a large handful of green leaves into the pan which quietly sizzled upon impact. Wednesday rolled her eyes at his response but noticed the leaves- spinach. She remained quiet for the time being as she watched him add whole cloves of peeled garlic to the pan, followed by what she pin-pointed as cumin and paprika. Once the spinach leaves had browned and the garlic had softened- he dumped half of the pan's contents into a bow. He handed the bowl to Wednesday along with a fork. "Would you mind mashing it for me?"
Wednesday didn't speak but took the fork and bowl off of him- proceeding to mash the ingredients together. Y/N carried on by adding the bag full of chickpeas into the pan with some tomato puree and an almond paste that he had prepared before hand- all of the wet ingredients sizzled and bubbled under the growing heat of the pan- heat that was well welcomed by the pair under the cold conditions. He turned to his left to observe Wednesday and the contents of the bowl. Smiling a little, he gently took the bowl from her grasp. "That's good." He mused as he let the paste fall into the pan.
Now she wasn't preoccupied, she got a look at the pan and took a heavy intake of the scent it was emitting- within an instant she knew what it was. A light smirk came onto her lips. "Espinacas con garbanzos." She murmured. She knew the meal well- it being one of her favourites during the colder seasons. Y/N hummed in response and nodded his head as he gently stirred the mix with a wooden spoon. Once he was confident that the chickpeas were cooked through, he shut off the gas. He then grabbed two clay bowls and readied them beside him- picking the pan up and splitting the meal in two halves between the two bows. Satisfied, he reached over to his bag and grabbed some cutlery, stabbing a fork into each bowl before handing one to Wednesday. "Thank you, mi dulce." She uttered, cupping the warm bowl in her chilly hands.
"You're welcome." He responded. Just as he was about to sit back against the trunk of the tree, he remembered something. Grabbing the tapers and placed them around them- pinching the wicks on each making them light up with a small flame. Wednesday watched- the flames glistening and reflecting in her eyes. Mesmerised by the pretty lights, she failed to notice Y/N planting his hand down on the grass beside him- closing his eyes and concentrating, he made small bulbs poke through the dirt. The whole field sprouted with stems and heavy bulbs which they struggled to hold. Wednesday noticed just in time to see the green bulbs explode into blackish-purple flowers. The filed they resided on grew littered with a dense crowd of black dahlia flowers. Her smile grew wider as she plucked one of the delicate flowers between her fingers. This was much more to her taste than the bouquet of roses she had received earlier.
Finally satisfied with himself, he shuffled back against the tree trunk and held his bowl in his hand. The two grew silent as they tucked in. While she didn't openly admit it- the meal tasted close to exactly like it did back home- but something was missing. "You missed out the goats blood." She stated before bring another mouthful to her mouth and biting down.
Y/N's shoulders dropped a little as he sighed, almost defeatedly. "I was hoping you wouldn't notice- its not exactly an easy ingredient to come by." He breathed.
Wednesday shuffled back so that she also sat leant against the tree, leaning into Y/N's shoulder a little. She swallowed the food in his mouth. "It wasn't a criticism- It tastes wonderful, Y/N" She complimented. She didn't need to look up at him to see the prideful grin on his lips. Silence swallowed them once more as they ate in silence. It was only whine Wednesday finished her bowl that she decided to break the quiet.
Her hand buried into her pocket like a coffin being lowered into its pit. She pulled out her gift to him- a thin box that was plain black in decoration. Still leaning against him with pretty much all of her weight, she handed the box to him. "Happy valentine's day." She muttered- almost begrudgingly, still not convinced by the concept of valentine's day. Her head craned up to watch his expression. While no one would have noticed- she was incredibly nervous about gifting him something- gift buying was certainly not her forte.
Y/N smiled whilst he took the box from her offering hand and admired the sleek design. "Thank you, Wednesday."
"Why are you thanking me, you haven't even opened it yet." She pointed out with a raised brow.
"it's the thought that counts." He shot back happily. He lifted the lid of the box and observed the item inside. He observed a ring that was mostly silver which reminded him of a lot of the jewellery that she wore. A band of a dull green crystal-like material ran through the centre. It was undoubtably beautiful and expensive. His smile grew a little wider- it would be shallow of him to say that value mattered in a gift but it truly did to him- it gave him a good gage on how much Wednesday valued him. His eyes shifted an inch to the side where a folded piece of paper sat in the silk lined box. Taking the small piece of paper between his forefinger and thumb, he rested the box in his lap. On the front, text read his name- undoubtably written in Wednesday's font. He unfolded the paper and read what it said.
'In my family, fluorite is a precious stone and grants us safe passage in our visions. It offers strength and protection and while I believe you are plenty strong enough and un-needing of protection, I hope it with gift you the same. Further yet, silver is believed to grant greater connections to those the wearer loves- especially when there other half wears silver too.'
After reading the note, he settled it back into the box, exchanging it for the ring which he pushed onto his finger. It was a perfect fit. His smile grew as it became toothy. "Its beautiful, thank you." He murmured as he leant down to plant a kiss on her forehead. He admired the ring on his hand for a few moments before he turned to pick up the two boxes he had brought. He offered the wrapped one to her first.
An annoyed look came onto her features. "I told you not to get me anything." She fired as she glared at him through her brows. Seeing he was undeterred, she sighed and took the box- at least he picked a presentable colour scheme. Taking a few moment to inspect the box, Wednesday took the lid off. Her brows knitted at what was inside. A tiny harness and a long thin leash. Perplexed, she looked over to Y/N. "Is this supposed to be for me- because I really don't think it will fit-"
Y/N's eyes grew wide as he profusely shook his head. "No, no, no." He blurted, his cheeks growing red. He offered the other box- the plain cardboard one.
Sighing once more, she took the box. Again confused by the state of the holey box, she examined it. finding no real clue as to what it was, she unfolded the top and peered inside. Y/N watched nervously as he bit onto his lip. She blinked. Once, twice, three times. That was more times than he'd seen her blink for months. His heart dropped as he noticed her bottom lip tremble and her eyes brim with tears. She slowly dipped a hand into the box and it returned back out with a small black scorpion in her palm. So tiny- she could tell with confidence that it had only recently hatched. The whites of her eyes grew red as she brought the scorpion closer to her face- trying to get a better look at it through the tears- and the scorpling looked back at her- seemingly wagging its tail and stinger. In an attempt to stop her lip trembling, she bit down on it- but this only caused the tears that she tried so hard to hold back to free fall down her face. Her lips turned upwards as she gently placed the small creature back into the box, setting it aside for a moment. She showed no hesitation in diving into Y/N, her arms grasping around him in any way they could. Her face burrowed deep into the crook of his neck as she sobbed.
Judging entirely off the small smile he thought he caught a glimpse of before she threw herself at him- Y/N was fairly sure she liked her gift. he planted either of his hands on her corresponding hips so he could pull her into his lap where he cradled her until she calmed down. He recalled the day she told him about Niro and his tragic death- she was stone faced even when she told him the tale, but he could see how dearly she missed him. It was an opportunity for him to make his way right to her cold, little, black heart.
With her head resting against his shoulder as if it were a pillow she managed to choke out a thank you. His arms remained around her as she embraced his touch.
"Its a girl and about two weeks old. The guy I bought her off said she hasn't been named yet and that she's already had her first malt... whatever that means." He explained as he swayed from side to side a little in the attempts to help sooth her rush of emotions. Wednesday listened and nodded along while he used one of his hands to wipe away the straggling tears that fell from her eyes down her cheeks.
"Caligo." She muttered quietly. "That's what I'll call her and I'm going to protect her with all of my might." She spoke up- determined to make sure Caligo would live a longer life than Niro had the chance to. She tightened her grip around Y/N as she pecked his lips. "Thank you, mi amor." She murmured softly, her hiccups and sobs having finally stopped. It had been a while since so many emotions overcame her in such a manner.
Y/N pecked her lips back and nodded. "Of course." He uttered back quietly. His head turned to see the sun starting to set- the clouds glowing with a brilliant mix of blood orange and pastel pink. Wednesday seemed to have also spotted the sight as well as she adjusted herself in his lap to watch the sun sink into its grave.
"I love you." She whispered gently. It was the first time that either of them had dared speak those three words to each other- both too afraid of being rejected by the other. But Wednesday had realised something about valentine's day that she had always neglected- it was a day to celebrate love. A day dedicated to those who are loved deeply- and she loved him deeper than any grave she knew of.
Shocked by her admittance, he glanced down at his ring- she had said that silver granted a greater connection to those he loved and she was wearing a silver ring too- perhaps it was already working. "I love you too." He murmured, his arms around her midriff and hands resting on her stomach as they remained onlookers of the golden skies. Wednesday turned her head and neck to make contact with his lips again and he kissed back. They could each taste the meal they shared with one another and neither could complain. Only after the kiss broke did Y/N suggest that they pack up and head back to Nevermore as the biting chill of the winter evening set in. They briskly packed up and started heading back in the direction they came, leaving behind the smouldering candles and filed of black dahlia flowers for the fields true owner to discover.
Once they made it to Y/N's car, they packed everything up and got in. Wednesday cradled the box in her lap, wanting to be as close to Caligo as she could. It took a while to notice Caligo had crawled out of the box and up her arm before settling on her shoulder. A warm smile grew on her lips. She'd smiled so much that day that her cheeks were sore. Perhaps valentines day wasn't as bad as had previously believed, thanks to Y/N.
